In this study, a large-scale laboratory model test and 2-D numerical analysis were conducted to verify the reinforcement effect by utilizing geotextile bag on the railway roadbed. Static loading which simulated train load was applied on the geotextile-reinforced railway roadbed and also unreinforced railway roadbed. Computer program named Pentagon 2-D which is a part of FEM programs was used in the numerical analysis. Based on the results of laboratory test and 2-D numerical analysis, the effect of load distribution and settlement reduction was found to be depending on the geotextile characteristics, tensile strength of geotextile, and interface friction angle between geotextile bags. In general, the result of 2-D numerical analysis shows lower value than that of laboratory test.
The non-linear behaviour of integral infilled frames (in which the infill and the frame are bonded together with help of various interface materials) is studied both experimentally and numerically. The experiments were carried out on one-sixth scale two-bay and three-storey reinforced concrete frames with and without infill against static cyclic loading. Three interface materials - cement mortar, cork and foam have been used in between the infill and the frame. The infill, interface and the frame are bonded together is called integral frame. The linear and non-linear behaviors of two dimensional bare frame and integral infilled frame have been studied numerically using the commercial finite element software SAP 2000. Linear finite element analysis has been carried out to quantify the effect of various interface materials on the infilled frames with various combinations of 21 cases and the results compared. The modified configuration that used all three interface materials offered better resistance above others. Therefore, the experiments were limited to this modified infilled frame case configuration, in addition to conventional (A1-integral infilled frame with cement mortar as interface) and bare frame (A0-No infill). The results have been compared with the numerical results done initially. It is found that stiffness of bare frame increased by infilling and the strength of modified frame increased by 20% compare to bare frame. The ductility ratio of modified infilled frame was 42% more than that of the conventional infilled frame. In general, the numerical result was found to be in good agreement with experimental results for initial crack load, ultimate load and deformed pattern of infill.
In this study, the seismic performance of the connections between L-shaped columns composed of concrete-filled steel tubes (L-CFST columns) and H-beams used in high-rise steel frame structures was investigated. Seven full-scale specimens were tested under quasi-static cyclic loading. The variables studied in the tests included the joint type, the axial compression ratio, the presence of concrete, the width-to-thickness ratio and the internal extension length of the side plates. The hysteretic response, strength degradation, stiffness degradation, ductility, plastic rotation capacity, energy dissipation capacity and the strain distribution were evaluated at different load cycles. The test results indicated that both the corner and exterior joint specimens failed due to local buckling and crack within the beam flange adjacent to the end of the side plates. However, the failure modes of the interior joint specimens primarily included local buckling and crack at the end plates and curved corners of the beam flange. A design method was proposed for the flexural capacity of the end plate connection in the interior joint. Good agreement was observed between the theoretical and test results of both the yield and ultimate flexural capacity of the end plate connection.
Beams of steel frame-tube structures (SFTSs) typically have span-to-depth ratios of less than five. This makes a flexural beam unsuitable for such an application because the plastic hinges at the beam-ends cannot be adequately developed. This leads to lower ductility and energy dissipation capacities of SFTSs. To address this, SFTSs with bolted web-connected replaceable shear links (SFTS-BWSLs) are proposed. In this structural system, a web-connected replaceable shear link with a back-to-back double channel section is placed at the mid-length of the deep beam to act as a ductile fuse. This allows energy from earthquakes to be dissipated through link shear deformation. SFTS and SFTS-BWSL buildings were examined in this study. Several sub-structures were selected from each designed building and finite element models were established to study their respective hysteretic performance. The seismic behavior of each designed building was observed through static and dynamic analyses. The results indicate that the SFTS-BWSL and SFTS have similar initial lateral stiffness and shear leg properties. The SFTS-BWSL had lower strength, but higher ductility and energy dissipation capacities. Compared to the SFTS, the SFTS-BWSL had lower interstory drift, base shear force, and story shear force during earthquakes. This design approach could concentrate plasticity on the shear link while maintaining the residual interstory drift at less than 0.5%. The SFTS-BWSL is a reliable resistant system that can be repaired by replacing shear links damaged due to earthquakes.
Wireless mobile networks tend to drop a large portion of packets due to propagation errors rather than congestion. To Improve reliability over noisy wireless channels, wireless networks can employ forward error correction (FEC) techniques. Static FEC algorithms, however, can degrade the performance by poorly matching their overhead to the degree of the underlying channel error, especially when the channel path loss rate fluctuates widely. This paper investigates the benefits of an adaptable FEC mechanism for wireless networks with severe packet loss by analytical analysis or measurements over a real wireless network called sensor network. We show that our adaptive FEC named FECA (FEC-level Adaptation) technique improves the performance by dynamically tuning FEC strength to the current amount of wireless channel loss. We quantify these benefits through a hybrid simulation integrating packet-level simulation with bit-level details and validate that FECA keeps selecting the appropriate FEC-level for a constantly changing wireless channel.
High strain rate tensile tests were performed to measure the strain rate sensitivity of fiber reinforced composite material. The composite material was developed for the light weight design of an automotive FEM(front end module) carrier. Standard specimens for quasi-static tests of fiber reinforced composites can be found in ASTM D3039. However, in case of high strain rate tests, it was hard to find standard specimen shapes. In this study, three kinds of tensile specimens designed based on ASTM D638 were investigated to determined the adequate gauge width of tensile specimen for fiber reinforced composite. A drop tower type of high speed tensile apparatus was developed for strain rates of about 15/s and 100/s. Gauge width of 6mm, 8mm and 10mm were investigated. Test results showed the specimen of 8mm width was adequate for the high strain rate tensile tests of fiber reinforced composite. It was found the strength of the composite material increased as the strain rate increased.

In order to investigate the effects of hot corrosion on the creep rupture properties and creep life of 304 stainless steel being used as tube materials of heavy oil fired boiler, the creep rupture tests were carried out at temperature 630.deg.C, 690.deg.C and 750.deg.C in static air for the specimens with or without coating of double layer corrosives according to the new hot corrosion test method simulating the situation commonly observed on superheater tubes of the actual boiler. The double layer corrosives are 85% V$_{2}$O$_{5}$ + 10% Na$_{2}$So$_{4}$ + 5% Fe$_{2}$O$_{3}$ as the inner layer corrosive being once melted at 900.deg. C and crushed to powder, and 10% V$_{2}$O$_{5}$ + 85% Na$_{2}$SO$_{4}$ +5% Fe$_{2}$O$_{3}$ as the outer layer corrosive. As results, in the specimen coated with the double layer corrosives, the rupture strength was extremely lowered and showed a large difference each other. The rupture ductility also lowered remarkably as a result of the brittle fracture mode due to hot corrosion. These results indicate that hot corrosion could essentially alter the creep fracture mechanism. From the metallographic observation, it was clarified that the rupture life of 304 stainless steel subjected to hot corrosion was chiefly determined by the behavior of the aggressive intergranular penetration of sulfides.des.

A cartridge type hydraulic logic valve consists of simple two port valve whose poppet is closed or opened by means of pressure signal of a pilot line. Accordingly, the logic valve can be used not only for direction, flow and pressure control purpose but also for versatile function valve which enables all above mentioned functions. In addition, the valve has little internal leakage and pressure loss, superior response characteristics and easiness in making small block type valve. The above mentioned good performances being recognized recently, the logic valve has been used widely in the large scale hydraulic system such as a hydraulic press system, for the performance requirements of high speed operation and precise control characteristics. However, there are scarce reports until now, except for a few ones from Aachen Institute of Technology in West Germany, so it is necessary to be studied on development and investigation for practical application. This paper showed that the static and dynamic characteristics of a logic valve when the logic valve is used for directional control, to investigate the relations between the valve operating characteristics and the valve design conditions. From the above mentioned procedure, it was ascertained that the valve operation characteristics obtained by numerical analysis showed good agreements with experimental results. The representative results obtained are as follows; 1. During the valve is closing, the poppet velocity is almost constant in the logic valve. 2. The pilot pressure P sub(3) and the resistance R in the pilot line have much influences on the valve operation time. 3. Spring strength have not such a severe influence on the valve operating time. 4. The operation characteristics of the logic valve can be estimated with good accuracy comparatively by numerical analysis with the equations describing poppet motion.
A numerical analysis was performed to investigate the effects of notched blasthole in controlling the fracture plane. Analyzed were elastic and elasto-plastic response of rock, and fracture propagation under static and dynamic load conditions. Results showed that the region exceeding the tensile strength extended up to three times the radius of a normal blasthole in elastic analysis, while fifteen times in elasto-plastic analysis. It was shown that a crack was driven from the notch tip up to the distance of 23 times the hole radius in the case of a notched blasthole with a notch of 5 mm in depth and 30 mm in length.

CAE-based structural optimization techniques are applied for the design of a lightweight crane. The boom of the crane is designed by shape optimization with the shape of the cross section of the boom as the design variable. The design objective is mass minimization, and the static strength and dynamic stiffness of the system are set as the design constraints. Hyperworks, a commercial analysis and optimization software, is used for shape and topology optimization. In order to consistently change the shape of the elements of the boom with respect to the change in the shape of its cross section, the morphing function in Hyperworks is used. The support of the boom of the original model is simplified to model the design domain for topology optimization, which is discretized by using three-dimensional solid elements. The final result after shape and topology optimization is 19% and 17% reduction in the masses of the boom and support, respectively, without a deterioration in the system stiffness.
