Technique for the Prevention of Inrush Current in a TCC Reactive Power Compensator

  • With the propagation and spread of the new regeneration energy and increase in electricity demand, power systems tend to be decentralized, and accordingly, the use of a power system stabilizer tends to expand for the stabilization of the distribution system. Thus, typical power system stabilizer, Static Var Compensator (SVC) is developed on a variety of topologies. In addition, the trend of technology leads from SVC to Static Synchronous Compensator(STATCOM) technology development. Recently, to overcome STATCOM's conversion losses and economic disadvantages, studies of a hybrid method using STATCOM and SVC in parallel have actively been conducted. This study proposes a new Soft-Step Switching method to limit inrush current problematic in Thyristor Controlled Capacitor (TCC) method in SVC function. In addition, to reduce Statcom's capacity, groups of reactive power compensation reactor and condenser for SVC were designed.

  • For stabilization and improving power factor in the power lines, various Static Var Compensators(SVC) have been considered to be installed and partly applicated already. With all these merits of the SVC, it stil has demerits, principally evoking harmonic problems. So far, many harmonic reduction type inverters have been used in various parts. In this paper, the reactive power is controlled by amplitude of the output voltage. This paper propose that the multiple voltage source inverter have controllable power factor made by load vary at receive-stage as lagging and leakage control. The theoretical analysis on this system was confirmed through the computer simulation and the experiments.

  • These days, widespread use of sensitive loads and distributed generators makes static transfer switch (STS) an essential component in power circuits to achieve a good power quality for AC Grids. In case of a short-circuit fault, previous STS cannot break the fault current. However, the proposed STS has the capability of breaking it quickly as a circuit breaker. Also if there are power quality problems such as Sag/Swell, the proposed STS can quickly transfers the load to the good quality source. Furthermore it is proved that the transfer time of the proposed STS is within one half of period of 3-phase source frequency regardless of the type of load. It is anticipated that the proposed STS may be utilized to realize many stable and reliable AC grid systems.

Static Switch Controller Based on Artificial Neural Network in Micro-Grid Systems

  • Micro-grid is connected to the main power grid through a static switch. One of the critical issues in micro-grids is protection which must disconnect the micro-grid from the network in short-circuit contingencies. Protective methods of micro-grid mainly follow the model of distribution system protection. This protection scheme suffers from improper operation due to the presence of single-phase loads, imbalance of three-phase loads and occurrence of power swings in micro-grid. In this paper, a new method which prevents from improper performance of static micro-grid protection is proposed. This method works based on artificial neural network (ANN) and able to differentiate short circuit from power swings by measuring impedance and the rate of impedance variations in PCC bus. This new technique provides a protective system with higher reliability.

  • HMT is a type of continuously variable transmission which has split power flow path characteristics with gear train and hydro static unit. The benefit of improved fuel economy and high power capacity enables it to be a promising application fur large vehicles. This paper presents the analysis results including velocity, static torque, transmission efficiency and dynamic model of the HMT that is developed for city buses. The speeds or gear shafts, the static clutch torque and split power ratio for each mode are detailed here. From the analysis of HMT transmission efficiency considering the power loss in meshed gear and hydraulic unit, we can conclude that minimization of hydraulic power is necessary for improved fuel economy design. Also, the dynamic simulation result for mode shift characteristics shows that little shift shock is observed because of the synchronized rotation speed in clutch.

  • In this paper, a static var compensator using PWM Cuk AC-AC converter is presented. The PWM Cuk AC-AC converter is modelled by using complex circuit DQ transformation whereby the basic condition to be used as a var compensator is derived and the static characteristic equations such as input current and reactive power is analytically obtained. Finally, the PSIM simulations show the validity of the modelling and analysis.

  • In this paper, instantaneous reactive power compensation algorithm is proposed and analyzed. The static Var generator developed in this paper is the current source PWM converter using hysteresis comparator method, which compensates the reactive power by detecting each instantaneous phase voltage and line current, independently. Some aspects on the static Var compensator-such as inductance, capacitance, hysteresis width, and switching frequency, etc.-are discussed. The dynamic performances are examined through digital simulation and experimental test.

  • An indirect cutting torque and cutting force estimation method is presented. This method uses a time-domain model between the spindle motor power, which calculated form measured spindle motor current and voltage. Spindle motor power is linear with cutting torque in this model. The cutting force is proportional to the cutting torque. Using trial cut, parameters are determined. Static sensitivity is suitable for various cutting conditions. The presented method is verified under several cutting tests on the CNC horizontal machining center.

  • This paper discusses the horizontally rotaling wind power generator. Quasi static analysis are applied to performance. Translational velocity. which varies on the distance from the rotating wind power generator is effective in speed. In high rotation. the reverse torque reduces the total effective troque. It is recommended to giver efforts to redutorque for the acceptavle performance of the horizontallv rogatting tvpe generator.
