  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the validity of seismic performance evaluation using static analysis. For this purpose, Ordinary Moment Resisting Steel Frames(OMRSF) for different heights(3, 6 ,9, 12 story) and seismic zones(Zone 2A, 2B, 3, 4) were designed in compliance to AISC LRFD 1993 Seismic Provisions and NEHRP 1994 Guidelines. Nonlinear Static Procedure(NSP) and Nonlinear Dynamic Procedure(NDP) with a set of ground motion record were used to evaluate seismic demands in OMRSFs. Using the DRAIN-2DX program, this study compares peak displacement demands(Target Displacement) proposed by FEMA 273 with the peak roof displacement demands obtained from the inelastic time history analyses. Based on the results, the validity of procedure of seismic demand evaluation using Target Displacement is discussed.

  • Plate girder bridges for tile Korean high-speed railway are optimally designed. Static and dynamic constraints are all considered. The design variables are the thicknesses and the lengths of the plates that are used to form I-shaped main girders with variable cross-sections. And the objective function is tile steel weight of a main girder. A C++ based design program is developed; this program interfaces with a FORTRAN based optimization program ADS. From the results of optimal design for various span lengths, it is observed that the deck vertical acceleration is one of the most important constraints in a special range of tile span length. Front a parametric study, sensitivity of the optimal design to static as well as dynamic constraints are presented.

  • Nonlinear dynamic time history analysis of a structure with energy dissipation devices is complicated and time consuming. In this regard the nonlinear static analysis is a practical alternative for evaluating the earthquake resisting capacity of a structure. In this study the nonlinear static response of a structure was obtained first, and the equivalent viscous modal damping ratio required to satisfy the performance objective was computed in the capacity spectrum format. Then proper amount of viscous dampers were installed to provide the required damping. Parametric study has been performed for the period of the structure, yield strength, and the stiffness after the first yield. According to the earthquake time history analysis results, the maximum displacement of the model structure with viscous dampers designed in accordance with the proposed method corresponds well with the target displacements that was used in the beginning of the design process.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to determine the static optimal shapes of tapered beams with constant volume. The linear, parabolic and sinusoidal tapers with the regular polygon cross-section are considered, whose material volume and span length are always held constant. The Runge-Kutta method is used to integrate the differential equation and also Shooting method is used to calculate the unknown boundary condition. Then the static optimal shapes are determined by reading the minimum values of the deflection versus section ratio curves plotted by the deflection data. In numerical examples, the various tapered beams are analyzed and those numerical results of this study are shown in figures.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the necessity of considering wind load combinations even for low-rise buildings. It first discusses the overall quasi-static wind load effects and their combinations to be considered in structural design of low-rise buildings. It was found that the maximum torsional moment closely correlates with the maximum along-wind base shear. It was also found that the instantaneous pressure distribution causing the maximum along-wind base shear was quite similar to that causing the maximum torsional moment, and that this asymmetric pressure pattern simultaneously accompanies considerable across-wind and torsional components. Secondly, the actual wind pressure distributions causing maximum quasi-static internal forces in the structural frames are conditionally sampled and their typical pressure patterns are presented.

  • The objective of the current study is to characterize the long-term stability and efficacy of a structural adhesive assembly under static load. An apparatus was designed to be used in the Instron tensile test machine that would allow for real time modeling of the failure characteristics of an assembly utilizing a moisture- cure adhesive which was bonded to concrete. A regression model was developed that followed a linear - natural log function which was used to predict the expected life of the assembly. Evaluations at different curing times confirmed the structure was more robust with longer cure durations prior to loading. Finally, the results show that under the conditions the assembly was tested, there was only a small amount of inelastic creep and the regression models demonstrated the potential for a stable structure lasting several decades.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the shear behavior of reinforced concrete beams according to small shear span-depth ratio between a/d=1.5, 2.8, 3.6. In general, shear strength of reinforced concrete beams is dependent on the compressive strength of concrete the longitudinal steel ratio, the shear span-depth ratio and shear reinforcement. The static test was carried out to measure the ultimate load, the initial load of flexural and diagonal cracking, crack patterns, fracture modes. The load versus strain and load versus deflection relations were obtained from the static test. The test results on shear strength were compared with results obtained by the formulas of ACI code 318-95. The shear strength of reinforced concrete beams exceeded those predicted following present ACI code 318-95(11-6).

  • An analytical method is proposed for the evaluation of the static response of a prestresse-dribbon concrete pedestrian bridge, which may also be applied for the roofing of large areas. On the basis of an established analogy with a suspension bridge system, a procedure is presented for the prestresse-dribbon direct analysis, leading to the introduction of two dimensionless parameters as governing factors of the design, namely the thinness and the prestressing steel ratio. The exposed procedure, applied by a simple computer program, allows a quick evaluation of the response and permits the investigation of the influence of the aforementioned parameters on it, by means of comprehensive diagrams. The presented diagrams may be directly used for the preliminary design of a pedestrian bridge of this type, for the whole practical range of span lengths. A design example is also included, showing the applicability of the proposed procedure.

  • In this paper results of a linear structural analysis for design and dimensioning of disposal containers for spent pressurized water reactor nuclear fuel and spent Canadian deuterium and uranium reactor nuclear fuel are presented. The container structure studied here is a solid structure with a cast insert and a corrosion resistant outer shell, which is designed for the spent nuclear fuel disposal in a deep repository. An evenly distributed load of hydrostatic pressure from the groundwater and large swelling pressure from the bentonite buffer are applied on the container. Hence, the container must be designed to endure these large pressure loads. In this study, the array type of inner baskets and thicknesses of outer shell and lid/bottom are attempted to be determined through a linear static structural analysis.

  • To evaluate the structural integrity for the strainer under seismic loading the seismic analysis and design were performed for T-type strainer in accordance with ASME, Section Ⅲ, Class 3(ND). Since there are no specified design requirements for the strainer in ASME Code, the strainer body was analysed according to ND-3500, valve design. Flanged joints connected with PCS piping were designed according to ND-3658.3. And the criteria for the cover flange was governed by the Appendix XI. Both a frequency analysis and an equivalent static seismic analysis of the strainer were carried out using the finite element computer program, ANSYS. The frequency analysis results show the fundamental natural frequency is greater than 33Hz, thus justifying the use of the equivalent static analysis through which membrane and bending stresses are obtained in the critical points near the branch connection area. The results of the seismic evaluation fully satisfied with the structural acceptance criteria of the ASME Code. Accordingly the structural integrity on the strainer body and flanges were proved.
