  • Little attention has been paid to static-strain-dependence of dynamic complex modulus of viscolelastic materials in computational analysisso far. Current commercial Finite Element Method (FEM) codes do not take such characteristics into consideration in constitutive equations of viscoelastic materials. Recent experimental observations that static-strain-dependence of dynamic complex modulus of viscolelastic materials, especially filled rubbers, are significant, however, require that solutions somehow are necessary. In this study, a simple technique of using a commercial FEM code, ABAQUS, is introduced, which seems to be far more cost/time saving than development of a new software with such capabilities. A static-strain-dependent correction factor is used to reflect the influence of static-strains in Merman model, which is currently the base of the ABAQUS. The proposed technique is applied to viscoelastic components of rather complicated shape to predict the dynamic stiffness under static-strain and the predictions are compared with experimental results.

  • Unlike a typical static seals, spring-energized static seals exhibit improvement in leak-tightness by reinforcing the spring inside the aluminum lining. Thus, spring-energized static seals are widely used in various industrial fields, such as aerospace, semiconductors, and petrochemical industries. The primary objective of this study is to develop design guidelines for spring-energized static seals in a wide range of temperatures, including that of cryogenic environments, by analyzing the required performance and influence of design variables through simulations. There are various parameters that can be controlled to design a leak-tight seal. In this study, the finite element analysis (FEA) is performed by controlling the parameters related to the spring and the thickness of the aluminum lining, and the result of the leakage between the seal and the casing is confirmed. Considering the influence of each parameters, all of them are found to be important. However, it is observed that the spring-related variables are more important than the aluminum lining or other variables when complexity is considered. We can identify the threshold value of spring stiffness that changes leak-tight performance of the seal by performing FEA. Simulation results, under the conditions that are considered in this study, show that spring stiffness should be at least 3.6 N/m to maintain leak-tightness caused by the sufficient contact force between the aluminum lining and the upper and lower casings.

  • In order to perform the spatial buckling and static analysis of the nonsymmetric thin-walled beam-column element, improved exact static stiffness matrices were evaluated using equilibrium equation and force-deformation relationships. This numerical technique was obtained using a generalized linear eigenvalue problem, by introducing 14 displacement parameters and system of linear algebraic equations with complex matrices. Unlike the evaluation of dynamic stiffness matrices, some zero eigenvalues were included. Thus, displacement parameters related to these zero eigenvalues were assumed as polynomials, with their exact distributions determined using the identity condition. The exact displacement functions corresponding to three loadingcases for initial stress-resultants were then derived, by consistently combining zero and nonzero eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors. Finally, exact static stiffness matrices were determined by applying member force-displacement relationships to these displacement functions. The buckling loads and displacement of thin-walled beam were evaluated and compared with analytic solutions and results using ABAQUS' shell element or straight beam element.

  • Purpose: Stretching exercises are commonly used in conjunction with sports and rehabilitation. Weassessed the immediate effects of stretching on passive stiffness of the hamstring muscles and knee range of motion (ROM) using three stretching techniques. Methods: A total of 45 participants were recruited. Isokinetic equipment was used to measure the passive stiffness of hamstring muscles and an inclinometer was used to measure active and passive ROM of the knee joint pre and post stretching. Stiffness was then calculated based on the incline of the torque-angle relationship. The test conditions for Group I were $3{\times}30$ seconds of static stretches using the hamstring muscle, Group II were $3{\times}30$ seconds of static stretches using the hamstring muscle with ankle dorsiflexion, and Group IIII had $3{\times}30$ seconds of active stretching. Results: Group II had significantly higher excursion of active ROM and Group IIIhad significantly higher excursion of passive muscle stiffness. All of the groups had significantly higher active and passive ROM and significantly lower muscle stiffness after stretching. The participants showed no change in hamstring muscle stiffness on the following day. Conclusion: Stretching has significant acute effects on ROM and muscle stiffness and canbe used in warm-up protocols for reducing muscle stiffness before a variety of exercise programs.

  • This paper describes static and dynamic weak point analysis of spindle systems to eliminate high concentrated bending point on spindle and improve total stiffness of spindle systems. The weak point analysis is based on the evaluation of bending curves of spindles. For static weak point analysis the bending curve is derived from static deflection curve and for dynamic weak point analysis it is derived from the mode shape curves in consideration of the transfer function at exciting point. The validity of the weak point search methodology is verified by comparison of the static deflection, the natural frequency and the dynamic compliance between the original and the improved spindle.

  • This paper predicts the rotordynamic force coefficients of tilting pad journal bearings (TPJBs) with ball-socket pivot and compares the predictions to the published test data obtained under load-between-pad (LBP) configuration. The present TPJB model considers the pivot stiffness calculated based on the Hertzian contact stress theory. Due to the compliance of the pivot, the predicted journal eccentricity agree well with the measured journal center trajectory for increasing static loads, while the early prediction without pivot model consideration underestimates it largely. The predicted pressure profile shows the significant pressure development even on the unloaded pads along the direction opposite to the loading direction. The predicted stiffness coefficients increase as the static load and the rotor speed increase. They agree excellently with test data from open literature. The predicted damping coefficients increase as the static load increases and the rotor speed decreases. The prediction underestimates the test data slightly. In general, the current predictive model including the pivot stiffness improves the accuracy of the rotordynamic performance predictions when compared to the previously published predictions.
