  • In this paper, a refined exponential shear deformation beam theory is developed for bending analysis of functionally graded beams. The theory account for parabolic variation of transverse shear strain through the depth of the beam and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the surfaces of the beam without using shear correction factors. Contrary to the others refined theories elaborated, where the stretching effect is neglected, in the current investigation this so-called "stretching effect" is taken into consideration. The material properties of the functionally graded beam are assumed to vary according to power law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. Based on the present shear deformation beam theory, the equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's principle. Analytical solutions for static are obtained. Numerical examples are presented to verify the accuracy of the present theory.

  • Superloading yield surface concept is newly introduced together with subloading yield surface conception in order to describe full gradation continuously of the mechanical behavior of soils from typical sand through intermediate soil to typical clay (All Soils). Finite deformation theory has been applied to the soil skeleton-pore water coupled continuum mechanics, which enables us to discuss things in a perpetual stream from stable state to unstable state like from deformation to failure and vice versa like from liquefaction to post liquefaction consolidation of sand (All States). Incremental form of the equation of motion has been employed in the continuum mechanics in order to incorporate a rate type constitutive equation, which is "All Round" enough to predict ground behavior under both static and dynamic conditions. The present paper is the shortened version of the lecture note delivered in 2008 Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Conference, Science Council Japan, but with newly developed application examples.

  • This paper proposes a new nonlocal higher-order hyperbolic shear deformation beam theory (HSBT) for the static bending and vibration of nanoscale-beams. Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory is incorporated, in order to capture small size effects. In the present model, the transverse shear stresses account for a hyperbolic distribution and satisfy the free-traction boundary conditions on the upper and bottom surfaces of the nanobeams without using shear correction factor. Employing Hamilton's principle, the nonlocal equations of motion are derived. The governing equations are solved analytically for the edges of the beam are simply supported, and the obtained results are compared, as possible, with the available solutions found in the literature. Furthermore, the influences of nonlocal coefficient, slenderness ratio on the static bending and dynamic responses of the nanobeam are examined.

  • In the present work, an analytical solution for the static analysis of laminated composites, functionally graded and sandwich singly and doubly curved panels on the rectangular plan-form, subjected to uniformly distributed transverse loading is presented. Mathematical formulation is based on the higher order shear deformation theory and principle of virtual work is applied to derive the equations of equilibrium subjected to small deformation. A solution methodology based on the fast converging finite double Chebyshev series is used to solve the linear partial differential equations along with the simply supported boundary condition. The effect of span to thickness ratio, radius of curvature to span ratio, stacking sequence, power index are investigated. The accuracy of the solution is checked by the convergence study of non-dimensional central deflection and moments. Present results are compared with those available in the literature.

  • Rubber materials have the nonlinear, large deformation and viscoelastic behavior. W.D. Kim et al. studied these characteristics through the static, fatigue, dynamic, aging and viscoelastic test. This paper discussed that the properties of engine mounting rubber, such as static stiffness, fatigue life and damping factor, are predicted based on CAE by using material properties acquired by the report of Kim et al. In result, the static stiffness of engine mounting rubber is predicted approximately in comparison with test value. Also, it was confirmed that the relationship of fatigue life and Green-Lagrange strain in specimen was the valid tool to predict the fatigue life of engine mounting rubber. From the results of transient viscoelastic analysis the damping factor changed rapidly at the range less than 8hz.

  • This paper aims to present an analytical model to predict the static analysis of laminated reinforced composite plates subjected to sinusoidal and uniform loads by using a simple first-order shear deformation theory (SFSDT). The most important aspect of the present theory is that unlike the conventional FSDT, the proposed model contains only four unknown variables. This is due to the fact that the inplane displacement field is selected according to an undetermined integral component in order to reduce the number of unknowns. The governing differential equations are derived by employing the static version of principle of virtual work and solved by applying Navier's solution procedure. The non-dimensional displacements and stresses of simply supported antisymmetric cross-ply and angle-ply laminated plates are presented and compared with the exact 3D solutions and those computed using other plate theories to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the present theory. It is found from these comparisons that the numerical results provided by the present model are in close agreement with those obtained by using the conventional FSDT.

  • In this paper, a new hyperbolic shear deformation plate theory based on neutral surface position is developed for the static analysis of functionally graded plates (FGPs). The theory accounts for hyperbolic distribution of the transverse shear strains and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the surfaces of the beam without using shear correction factors. The neutral surface position for a functionally graded plate which its material properties vary in the thickness direction is determined. The mechanical properties of the plate are assumed to vary continuously in the thickness direction by a simple power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. Based on the present new hyperbolic shear deformation plate theory and the neutral surface concept, the governing equations of equilibrium are derived from the principle of virtual displacements. Numerical illustrations concern flexural behavior of FG plates with Metal-Ceramic composition. Parametric studies are performed for varying ceramic volume fraction, volume fraction profiles, aspect ratios and length to thickness ratios. The accuracy of the present solutions is verified by comparing the obtained results with the existing solutions.

  • In this paper, the aeroelastic static response of flexible wings with arbitrary cross-section geometry via a coupled CUF-XFLR5 approach is presented. Refined structural one-dimensional (1D) models, with a variable order of expansion for the displacement field, are developed on the basis of the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF), taking into account cross-sectional deformability. A three-dimensional (3D) Panel Method is employed for the aerodynamic analysis, providing more accuracy with respect to the Vortex Lattice Method (VLM). A straight wing with an airfoil cross-section is modeled as a clamped beam, by means of the finite element method (FEM). Numerical results present the variation of wing aerodynamic parameters, and the equilibrium aeroelastic response is evaluated in terms of displacements and in-plane cross-section deformation. Aeroelastic coupled analyses are based on an iterative procedure, as well as a linear coupling approach for different free stream velocities. A convergent trend of displacements and aerodynamic coefficients is achieved as the structural model accuracy increases. Comparisons with 3D finite element solutions prove that an accurate description of the in-plane cross-section deformation is provided by the proposed 1D CUF model, through a significant reduction in computational cost.

  • In this paper, we have investigated deformation of cup for EFI detonator in high velocity impact test. The experimental result shows that STS cup deformed 0.170 mm with the bulged shape. The numerical simulation result with static/dynamic material properties of SUS304 shows 0.166 mm of deformation. The main parameters to decrease the deformation of cup are stength, thickness and density of cup. The initial condition of SUS304 cup was strength of 215 MPa and thickness of 0.12 mm. As strength increases to 500 MPa, deformation of cup converges to 0 mm, and as thickness increases to 0.18 mm, deformation of cup converges to 0 mm. If the density of cup decreases from 8 to 2.7 g/cc, the deformation of cup decreases to 0.141 mm.
