  • The lowest power mode (passive-standby mode) was proposed for reducing the power consumption of set-top boxes in a standby state when not receiving content. However, low-power set-top boxes equipped with the lowest power mode have been rarely commercialized because of their low-quality user experience. In the lowest power mode, they deactivates almost all of operational modules and processes, and thus require dozens of seconds for activation latency (that is, the latency for activating all modules of the set-top boxes in a standby state). They are not even updated in a standby state because they deactivate their network interfaces in a standby state. This paper proposes an adaptive standby mode scheduling method for improving the user experience of such boxes. Set-top boxes using the proposed method can analyze the activation pattern and find the frequently used time period (that is, when the set-top boxes are frequently activated). They prepare for their activation during this frequently used time period, thereby reducing the activation latency and enabling their update in a standby state.

  • In this paper, we designed the off-line PWM(Pulse width modulation) control IC for flyback type power converter to reduce the standby power consumption. In normal state, this off-line PWM IC generates the output pulse with $40\sim60kHz$ frequency and duty ratio of $20\sim88%$. When SMPS operates in standby mode, this IC generates the output pulse with 33kHz frequency and duty ratio of 1 %. SPICE simulation was performed to verify the standby power consumption of the power converter with designed of-line PWM IC. Power converter with designed off-line PWM IC consumes less than 0.3W when it operates in standby mode condition.

  • Recently, there have been suggestions that power factor should be considered to increase the efficiency of electric power supply when evaluating the performance of the electric appliances in standby mode and the related studies have been conducted to improve the efficiency standard of standby power. But, they lack the analysis of the standby power characteristics with the changes of power factor. This study is conducted to analyze the standby power characteristics of TV which is a typical home appliance and reaches a conclusion that the apparent power can be a more reasonable index which reflects the efficiency of electric power supply. It is also found that LED TVs show the best performance in standby mode. Moreover, an example to set standby power standards on TVs to be applied in the future is suggested, considering the energy efficiency policies for appliances.

  • Wireless power transfer (WPT) technology with various transfer mechanisms such as inductive coupling, magnetic resonance and capacitive coupling is being widely researched. Until now, power transfer efficiency (PTE) and power transfer capability (PTC) have been the primary concerns for designing and developing WPT systems. Therefore, a lot of studies have been documented to improve PTE and PTC. However, power consumption in the standby mode, also defined as the no-load mode, has been rarely studied. Recently, since the number of WPT products has been gradually increasing, it is necessary to develop techniques for reducing the standby power consumption of WPT systems. This paper investigates the standby power consumption of commercial WPT products. Moreover, a standby power reduction technique for WPT systems via magnetic resonance coupling (MRC) with a parallel resonance type resonator is proposed. To achieve a further standby power reduction, the voltage control of an AC/DC travel adapter is also adopted. The operational principles and characteristics are described and verified with simulation and experimental results. The proposed method greatly reduces the standby power consumption of a WPT system via MRC from 2.03 W to 0.19 W.

  • In this paper, a new standby-mode control method for multiple output switching-mode power-supply is suggested, which uses the control signal of the feedback compensator of the inner loop in the linear voltage regulator located at the transformer secondary side, as the load current information. Conventional method has a problem that standby mode occurs depending only on the load condition of the main controller output, which makes the other secondary side output very inaccurate by burst mode operation. The proposed method detects all the load current information and operates in burst mode only when the all of them are light load condition. Minimum of the additional components are required for the implementation of the proposed method because the load information is obtained from the existing feedback circuit of the post-stage linear regulator. In this paper, the operating principles of the proposed standby-mode circuit are presented with an numerical analysis, and are verified by 25W hardware prototype implementation.

  • Commercial home appliances using remotely controlled systems consume electric power while in standby mode to prepare for receiving a remote turn-on signal. The proposed power system can significantly reduce standby power consumption without increasing cost. Furthermore, since a Electronic Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC) is used as an auxiliary power storage element, the life cycle is longer and system reliability can be better than with existing approaches. When the energy of the EDLC is not sufficient for turning on the appliance, the power system charges the EDLC without affecting the main system. The proposed power system is verified with a commercial LCD TV and a 3.93mW standby consumption is obtained. This standby consumption can be regarded as zero standby equipment according to the IEC-62031 standard.

  • Set-top Box which receives broadcasting signal and delivers it to display device such as TV usually doesn't have low-power mode, standby power mode. On the other side, most consumer electronics support standby power mode. The main reasons come from technical barriers and operational stability. Set-top box normally consumes 80~90% power of active mode even though turning off. This is much higher compared to other consumer electronics which consume less than 1W in standby power mode. However, most developed countries including Korea are enforcing the regulations which enhance energy efficiency of set-top box. This paper describes design and development of low-power set-top box. Key technologies are SoC supporting low-power mode, system hardware and software operating in separated power mode, and middleware managing the power with broadcasting system. Finally, we show energy saving expectation through development and proliferation.

  • We have developed a new energy-consuming monitoring system that has made it possible to measure the energy consumption of a gas scrubber, one of semiconductor processing equipments, and installed this system to the gas scrubber under operating at a manufacture site. Using this system, we have measured consumptions of electric power and processing gas consumed at standby to operating mode. In case of the gas scrubber, processing gas flows continuously into it at standby and operating mode. Therefore, if the electric power has been supplied, the processing gas can flows into the device for 24 hours. Moreover, at operating of gas scrubber, the amount of electricity consumption is 5 kWh. At Standby of gas scrubber, it spends 3kwh. It is certain that the energy consumption is greater at operating mode than at standby mode. The carbon emission rates from 24 hour gas scrubber operation are 236 $kgCO_2$/day of $N_2$, 57 $kgCO_2$/day of electric power and 0.001 $kgCO_2$/day of cooling water. Most of carbon is emitted from $N_2$ gas and electric power consumption.

  • To solve the problems in the contact charging of inspection robots, a wireless charging system for inspection robots and a control strategy are introduced in this paper. Circuit models of a wireless power system with a compound compensation circuit and a three-phase Class-D resonant inverter are set up based on circuit theory. An output voltage control method based on the equal spread regulation of the phase difference between adjacent phases and the parameter correction method in the primary compound compensation circuit are proposed. The dynamic characteristics of the key parameters varying with the secondary coil position are obtained to further investigate the adaptive location scheme during the access and exit processes of moving robots. Combining the output voltage control method and the adaptive location scheme, a transition control strategy for the standby and operation modes of the wireless charging systems for inspection robots is put forward to realize the system characteristics including the low standby power in the standby mode and the high receiving power in the operation mode. Finally, experiments are designed and conducted to verify the correctness of the theoretical research.

  • A power management controller circuit with switched capacitor mode down regulator and battery charger block for semi-active RFID tags was proposed and fabricated. The main purposes of the proposed switched capacitor mode down regulator and battery charger block are to reduce standby current and to provide a self-controlled thin film battery charger by detecting the received RF power, respectively. Fabricated chip area is $360,000{\mu}m^2$ and measured standby current was about $1.3{\mu}A$. To further reduction of standby current, a wake-up circuit has to be included in the power management controller.
