  • Numerical simulation of flow past two-dimensional hill and valley is presented. Application of three turbulence models - the standard and modified (Kato-Launder) $k-{\varepsilon}$ models and standard $k-{\omega}$ model - is discussed. The computational methodology is briefly described. The mean velocity and turbulence intensity profiles, obtained from numerical simulations of flow past the hill, are compared with the experimental data acquired in a boundary-layer wind tunnel at Colorado State University. The mean velocity, turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress profiles from numerical simulations of flow past the valley are compared with published experimental data. Overall, the results of simulations employing the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model were found to be in a better agreement with the experimental data than those obtained using the modified $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and the $k-{\omega}$ model.

  • The statistical characteristics of typhoon wind speed records tend to have a considerable time-varying trend; thus, the stationary wind model may not be appropriate to estimate the wind characteristics of typhoon events. Several nonstationary wind speed models have been proposed by pioneers to characterize wind characteristics more accurately, but comparative studies on the applicability of the different wind models are still lacking. In this study, three landfall typhoons, Ampil, Jongdari, and Rumbia, recorded by ultrasonic anemometers atop the Shanghai World Financial Center (SWFC), are used for the comparative analysis of stationary and nonstationary wind characteristics. The time-varying mean is extracted with the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) method, and the time-varying standard deviation is calculated by the autoregressive moving average generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (ARMA-GARCH) model. After extracting the time-varying trend, the longitudinal wind characteristics, e.g., the probability distribution, power spectral density (PSD), turbulence integral scale, turbulence intensity, gust factor, and peak factor, are comparatively analyzed based on the stationary wind speed model, time-varying mean wind speed model and time-varying standard deviation wind speed model. The comparative analysis of the different wind models emphasizes the significance of the nonstationary considerations in typhoon events. The time-varying standard deviation model can better identify the similarities among the different typhoons and appropriately describe the nonstationary wind characteristics of the typhoons.

  • The proxy re-encryption allows an intermediate proxy to convert a ciphertext for Alice into a ciphertext for Bob without seeing the original message and leaking out relevant information. Unlike many prior identity based proxy re-encryption schemes which are based on the number theoretic assumptions such as large integer factorization and discrete logarithm problem. In this paper, we first propose a novel identity based proxy re-encryption scheme which is based on the hardness of standard Learning With Error(LWE) problem and is CPA secure in the standard model. This scheme can be reduced to the worst-case lattice hard problem that is able to resist attacks from quantum algorithm. The key step in our construction is that the challenger how to answer the private query under a known trapdoor matrix. Our scheme enjoys properties of the non-interactivity, unidirectionality, anonymous and so on. In this paper, we utilize primitives include G-trapdoor for lattice and sample algorithms to realize simple and efficient re-encryption.

  • Most of the real world phenomena change over time. The ability to represent and to reason geographic data becomes crucial. A large amount of non-standard applications are dealing with data characterized by spatial, temporal and/or uncertainty features. Non-standard data like spatial and temporal data have an inner complex structure requiring sophisticated data representation, and their operations necessitate sophisticated and efficient algorithms. Current GIS technology is inefficient to model and to handle complex geographic phenomena, which involve space, time and uncertainty dimensions. This paper concentrates on developing a fuzzy spatio-temporal data model based on fuzzy set theory and relational data models. Fuzzy spatio-temporal operators are also provided to support dynamic query.

  • Modelling an equilibrium atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) in computational wind engineering (CWE) and relevant areas requires the boundary conditions, the turbulence model and associated constants to be consistent with each other. Among them, the inflow boundary conditions play an important role and determine whether the equations of the turbulence model are satisfied in the whole domain. In this paper, the idea of modeling an equilibrium ABL through specifying proper inflow boundary conditions is extended to the SST $k-{\omega}$ model, which is regarded as a better RANS model for simulating the blunt body flow than the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. Two new sets of inflow boundary conditions corresponding to different descriptions of the inflow velocity profiles, the logarithmic law and the power law respectively, are then theoretically proposed and numerically verified. A method of determining the undetermined constants and a set of parameter system are then given, which are suitable for the standard wind terrains defined in the wind load code. Finally, the full inflow boundary condition equations considering the scale effect are presented for the purpose of general use.

  • Human body communication (HBC) is being recognized as a new communication technology for mobile and wearable devices in a body area network (BAN). This paper presents co-channel interference experienced by HBC supporting the physical layer in the IEEE 802.15.6 BAN standard. To analyze the co-channel interference, a co-channel interference model is introduced, and space-domain and time-domain parameters representing an interference environment are generated using the co-channel interference model. A new signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) parameter depending on the peak amplitudes of the data signals causing co-channel interference is defined; co-channel interference can be easily analyzed and modelled using the newly defined SIR. The BER degradation model derived using the co-channel interference model and SIR in this paper can be effectively used to estimate the performance.

  • Using nitrogen as the limiting nutrient, the default version of a microplankton-detritus model linked chlorophyll concentration to the autotroph nitrogen. However, phosphorus dynamics were added to simulate the results of a microcosm experiment. Using standard parameter values with a single value of microheterotroph fraction in the microplankton taken from the observed range, the best simulation successfully captured the main features of the time-courses of chlorophyll and particulate organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, with root-mean-square error equivalent to 29% of particulate concentration. A standard version of microbiological model assumes complete internal cycling of nutrient elements; adding a term for ammonium and phosphate excretion by microheterotrophs did not significantly improve predictions. Relaxing the requirement for constant microheterotroph fraction resulted in an autotroph-heterotroph model AH, with dynamics resembling those of a Lotka-Volterra predator-prey system. AH fitted the microcosm data worse than did MP, justifying the suppression of Lotka-Volterra dynamics in MP. The paper concludes with a discussion of possible reasons for the success of the simple bulk dynamics of MP in simulating microplankton behaviour.
