  • Recently, research using unstructured data such as images and videos has been actively conducted in various fields. Edge detection is one of the most useful image enhancement techniques to improve the quality of the image process. However, it is very difficult to perform edge detection in noise images because the edges and noise having high frequency components. This paper uses a linear model and standard deviation as an effective edge detection method for noise images. The edge is detected by the difference between the standard deviation of the pixels included in the pixel block and the standard deviation of the residual obtained by fitting the linear model. The results of edge detection are compared with the results of the Sobel edge detector. In the original image, the Sobel edge detection result and the proposed edge detection result are similar. Proposed method was confirmed that the edge with reduced noise was detected in the various levels of noise images.

  • Time-predictability of computing is critical for hard real-time and safety-critical systems. However, currently there is no metric available to quantitatively evaluate time-predictability, a feature crucial to the design of time-predictable processors. This paper first proposes the concept of architectural time-predictability, which separates the time variation due to hardware architectural/microarchitectural design from that due to software. We then propose the standard deviation of clock cycles per instruction (CPI), a new metric, to measure architectural time-predictability. Our experiments confirm that the standard deviation of CPI is an effective metric to evaluate and compare architectural time-predictability for different processors.

  • PURPOSES : The nonlinear model of fatigue cracking is typically used for determining the maintenance period. However, this requires that the model parameters be known. In this study, the particle filter (PF) method was used to determine various statistical parameters such as the mean and standard deviation values for the nonlinear model of fatigue cracking. METHODS : The PF method was used to determine various statistical parameters for the nonlinear model of fatigue cracking, such as the mean and standard deviation. RESULTS : On comparing the values obtained using the PF method and the least square (LS) method, it was found that PF method was suitable for determining the statistical parameters to be used in the nonlinear model of fatigue cracking. CONCLUSIONS : The values obtained using the PF method were as accurate as those obtained using the LS method. Furthermore, reliability design can be applied because the statistical parameters of mean and standard deviation can be obtained through the PF method.

  • Recently, in order to achieve high flexibility of manufacture, monitoring and control strategies cf a new type have been developed. Since the generation of built-up edge on the cutting tool damages the surface finish of the workpiece, the monitoring system of built-up edge is an important process monitoring. In this study, the analyzing methods of cutting force signal to detect the built-up edge during cutting process are described. The cutting force signals are analyzed using the mean, standard deviation and mean to standard deviation of this cutting signals. We can obtain the guide to detect the built-up edge during turning process.

  • Aperture is an important parameter for determining the hydraulic characteristics of fractured media. In this study the topography of artificial rock joint surface was measured using 3D laser profilometer to analyze the aperture distribution. The initial aperture distribution was determined when the contact area became one percent of total joint surface. The initial aperture distribution of granite joint, with the mean value of 0.78 mm and the standard deviation of 0.34 mm was much different from that of the marble joint, with the mean value of 0.57 mm and the standard deviation of 0.26 mm. Apertures of both granite and marble showed normal distributions. Aperture distribution with the contact area of 25% was also analyzed. Mean value was decreased to one third compared to the initial aperture, but the standard deviation was decreased slightly. To determine the spatial correlation of the aperture distribution variogram analysis was carried out on the initial aperture data. Most experimental variograms were fitted well with exponential model. It is expected that the measured aperture characteristics can be used for stochastic analysis of fluid flow through rock joints.

  • The effect of mixing ratios of active ingredient on the content uniformity of tablets was studied using caffeine as active ingredient and hydroxypropyl starch as diluent. In the case that caffeine content was not more than 1%, the standard deviation of individual tablet assays was inversely proportional to caffeine content. In the case of more than 1%, the standard deviation was constant independently of caffeine content. In the case that the designed tablet weight was not more than 200mg, the standard deviation of individual tablet assays was inversley proportional to tablet weight designed. In the case of more than 200mg, it was constant and the results for weight variation against the designed weight showed same tendency.

  • Effect of liquid viscosity was studied experimentally on the drop size distributions of the liquid sprays from swirl atomizers. Glycerine-Water mixtures were used as test fluids for the experiments. Drop sizes of the liquid sprays were measured with the light scattering method. The concept of the standard deviation was introduced to represent the degree of uniformity of the drop size distributions. Experimental results show that the spray drops become coarser and less uniform with the liquid of higher viscosity. The effect of viscosity on the Sauter mean diameter and the standard deviation appeared to be more significant with the lower injection pressure. It was also confirmed that the Sauter mean diameter increases with the increase of the liquid viscosity and with the decrease of the injection pressure.

  • Electrospray is a method of atomizing fluid using high voltage supply and capable of generating continuous flow and coherent size of droplets. Electrical system and properties of fluids has enabled electrospray to have various spray modes. However, its studies have been confined only in Cone jet, which is more stable and easier to manipulate droplets' size than other spraying modes. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate and compare other spraying modes based on experimental parameters and physical properties of fluids. This research paper identified nine different spray modes. It was found out that Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) is proportional to flow rate of fluids and maximum difference among spray modes was 1.7 times. On the other hand, SMD standard deviation had low variations on specific flow rates of fluids. Pulsed jet mode recorded the largest SMD standard deviation, while Spindle recorded the lowest.

  • Software effort estimation is one of the most difficult tasks in software development whereas predictability is also of equal importance for strategic management. Accurate prediction of the actual cost that will be incurred in software development can be very beneficial for the strategic management. This study discusses the latest trends in software estimation focusing on analogy-based techniques to show how they have improved the accuracy for software effort estimation. It applies the standard deviation technique to the expected value of analogy-based estimates to improve accuracy. In more than 60 percent cases the applied technique of this study helped in improving the accuracy of software estimation by reducing the Magnitude of Relative Error (MRE). The technique is simple and it calculates the expected value of cost or time and then uses different confidence levels which help in making more accurate commitments to the customers.
