  • The ultra-precision polishing method using MR fluid has come into the spotlight for polishing metals and optical materials. The MR fluid jet polishing process can be controlled using a change of viscosity by an imposed magnetic field. The MR fluid used for polishing process is a mixture of CI particles, DI water, $Na_2CO_3$ and glycerin. The efficiency of polishing depends on parameters such as polishing time, magnetic field, stand-off distance, pressure, etc. In this paper, the MR fluid jet polishing was used to polish nickel and brass mold materials, which is used to fabricate backlight units for 3-D optical devices in mobile display industries. In MR jet polishing, ferromagnetic materials like nickel can decrease the polishing efficiency by interaction with the cohesiveness of the MR fluid more than non-ferromagnetic materials like copper. A series of tests with different polishing times showed that the surface roughness of brass (Ra=1.84 nm) was lower than that of nickel (Ra=2.31 nm) after polishing for 20 minutes.

  • It is well known that abrasive waterjet (AWJ) was developed as a kind of high-density energy processing technologies. AWJ is used to obtain cutting quality of various materials such as metal, ceramics, glass and composite materials within a short manufacturing time because of the characteristics of heatless and noncontact processing. However, surface roughness and dimension error like round, burr, taper vary severely according to the processing conditions such as pressure, cutting speed, orifice diameter, stand off distance and abrasive flow rate. In this paper, the effect of the shape of mixing chamber on surface quality is studied. Three types of mixing chamber - round, parabolic, elliptical - are suggested and each performance is compared to that of cylindrical mixing chamber experimentally. From the result, is proved to be the optimal mixing chamber in the aspect of surface quality the parabolic one.

  • An edge tone is the discrete tone or narrow-band sound produced by an oscillating free shear layer, impinging on a rigid surface. In this paper, we present a 2-D edge tone to predict the frequency characteristics of the discrete oscillations of a jet-edge feedback cycle, using the finite difference lattice Boltzmann method (FDLBM). We use a modified version of the lattice BGK compressible fluid model, adding an additional term and allowing for longer time increments, compared to a conventional FDLBM, and also use a boundary fitted coordinates system. The jet is chosen long enough in order to guarantee the parabolic velocity profile of the jet at the outlet, and the edge consists of a wedge with an angle of ${\alpha}$ = 23. At a stand-off distance, the edge is inserted along the centerline of the jet, and a sinuous instability wave, with real frequency, is assumed to be created in the vicinity of the nozzle and propagates towards the downstream. We have succeeded in capturing very small pressure fluctuations, resulting from periodical oscillations of a jet around the edge. The pressure fluctuations propagate with the speed of sound. Its interaction with the wedge produces an non-rotational feedback field, which, near the nozzle exit, is a periodic transverse flow, producing the singularities at the nozzle lips.

  • In terms of food safety, mixture of contaminants in food is a serious problem for not only consumers but also manufacturers. In general, the target size of the metallic contaminant to be removed is 0.5 mm. However, it is a difficult task for manufacturers to achieve this target, because of lower system sensitivity. Therefore, we developed a food contaminant detection system based on high-Tc RF superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs), which are highly sensitive magnetic sensors. This study aims to improve the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the system and detect a 0.5 mm diameter steel ball. Using a real time digital signal processing technique along with analog band-pass filters, we improved the SNR of the system. Owing to the improved SNR, a steel ball with a diameter as small as 0.3 mm, with stand-off distance of 117 mm was successfully detected. These results suggest that the proposed system is a promising candidate for the detection of metallic contaminants in food products.

  • The explosive forming has been used for many year to expand tubes into tubesheets. this process has demonstrated ability to direct carefully the energy of an explosive to expand tubes into tubesheet holes without damaging the tubesheet and without causing the excessive cold work at the tube I.D. that is normally associated with mechanical expansion. The success of explosive tube expansion provided the background for the development of the explosive tube plug. The main results are as follows : (1) The optimum explosives and explosive qualities are PETN, RDX, HMS and about 18~31gr/ft of explosive plugging in nuclear steam generator. (2) Explosive plugging's thickness is 0.9~1.8mm. If groove of 0.4 mm formed in plug outside, For the hydraulic leakage is go up, explosive plugging of formed groove are applicate tube and tubrplate. (3) Sheath is designed on the polyethylene of low density, In thermal impact test of the $430^\circ{C}$, hydraulic leakage is $300kg/cm^2$. (4) About 10~60mm oxide inclusions are existed on the space of explosive plug and tube protect to the leakage.

  • An edgetone is the discrete tone or narrow-band sound produced by an oscillating free shear layer, impinging on a rigid surface. In this paper, 2-dimensional edgetone to predict the frequency characteristics of the discrete oscillations of a jet-edge feedback cycle is presented using lattice Boltmznan model with 21 bits, which is introduced a flexible specific heat ratio y to simulate diatomic gases like air. The blown jet is given a parabolic inflow profile for the velocity, and the edges consist of wedges with angle 20 degree (for symmetric wedge) and 23 degree (for inclined wedge), respectively. At a stand-off distance w, the edge is inserted along the centerline of the jet, and a sinuous instability wave with real frequency is assumed to be created in the vicinity of the nozzle exit and to propagate towards the downward. Present results presented have shown in capturing small pressure fluctuating resulting from periodic oscillation of the jet around the edge. The pressure fluctuations propagate with the speed of sound. Their interaction with the wedge produces an irrotational feedback field which, near the nozzle exit, is a periodic transverse flow producing the singularities at the nozzle lips. It is found that, as the numerical example, satisfactory simulation results on the edgetone can be obtained for the complex flow-edge interaction mechanism, demonstrating the capability of the lattice Boltzmann model with flexible specific heat ratio to predict flow-induced noises in the ventilating systems of ship.

  • In semiconductor manufacturing, critical dimensions indicate the features of patterns formed by the semiconductor process. The purpose of measuring critical dimensions is to confirm whether patterns are made as intended. The deposition process for an organic light emitting diode (OLED) forms a luminous organic layer on the thin-film transistor electrode. The position of this organic layer greatly affects the luminescent performance of an OLED. Thus, a system for measuring the position of the organic layer from outside of the vacuum chamber in real-time is desired for monitoring the deposition process. Typically, imaging from large stand-off distances results in low spatial resolution because of diffraction blur, and it is difficult to attain an adequate industrial-level measurement. The proposed method offers a new superresolution single-image using a conversion formula between two different optical systems obtained by a deep learning technique. This formula converts an image measured at long distance and with low-resolution optics into one image as if it were measured with high-resolution optics. The performance of this method is evaluated with various samples in terms of spatial resolution and measurement performance.

  • Metal 3D-printing technology enables the manufacture of complex features or internal structures, which is not possible in fabrication by conventional cutting methods. The most successful types of metal 3D printing have been powder bed diffusion and directed energy deposition, which use laser heads exploiting high-power laser sintering metal powder. In this study, a cost-effective optical design was proposed for a 2-kW-level fiber laser head. Only two commercial lenses, a beamsplitter and a window, are used in the laser head, satisfying the technological requirements. According to the optical design, the spot size was 2.54 mm, and the stand-off distance from the laser head was 295 mm. The intensity distribution was Gaussian. Thus, smooth power sintering was possible without any laser spot marks. Monte Carlo analysis was employed to verify the consistency of the optical performance under conventional assembly tolerance.
