The aim of this study is to investigate the initiation and propagation of crevice corrosion for ferritic stainless steel in artificial crevice based on micro capillary tube method. The 430 stainless steel in artificial crevice is potentiostatically polarized in different sodium chloride solutions. Potentiodynamic and potentiostatic polarization data were measured in situ. The potentials in the crevice were measured by depth profile using the 0.04 mm diameter micro capillary tube inserted in the crevice. The potentials in the crevice ranged from -220 mV to -360 mV vs SCE from opening to bottom of crevice, which are lower than the external surface potential, -200 mV vs SCE. Such a potential drop induced the change of the metal surface state from passive to active. The surface of metal is located in passive state in -200 mV but the inner surface keeps active state below -220 mV, Thus these results show that the It drop mechanism in the crevice was more objective for evaluation and the method was easier to reproduce. Therefore the potential drop is one of the reasons for crevice corrosion by measuring the potentials in narrow crevice with a new micro measuring system.

Spiral welded tubes (SWTs) are fabricated by helically bending a steel plate and welding the resulting abutting edges. The cost-effectiveness of concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns can be enhanced by utilising such SWTs rather than the more conventional longitudinal seam welded tubes. Even though the steel-concrete interface bond strength of such concrete-filled spiral-welded steel tubes (CF-SWSTs) is an important consideration in relation to ensuring composite behaviour of such elements, especially at connections, it has not been investigated in detail to date. CF-SWSTs warrant separate consideration of their bond behaviour to CFSTs of other tube types due to the distinct weld seam geometry and fabrication induced surface imperfection patterns of SWTs. To address this research gap, axial push-out tests on forty CF-SWSTs were carried out where the effects of tube material, outside diameter (D), outside diameter to wall thickness (D/t), length of the steel-concrete interface (L) and concrete strength grade (f'c) were investigated. D, D/t and L/D values in the range 102-305 mm, 51-152.5 and 1.8-5.9 were considered while two nominal concrete grades, 20 MPa and 50 MPa, were used for the tests. The test results showed that the push-out bond strengths of CF-SWSTs of both mild-steel and stainless-steel were either similar to or greater than those of comparable CFSTs of other tube types. The bond strengths obtained experimentally for the tested CF-SWSTs, irrespective of the tube material type, were found to be well predicted by the guidelines contained in AISC-360.
This paper presents the experimental and theoretical results of SUS 304 stainless tubes with different diameter-to-thickness ratio (D/t ratio) subjected to pure bending creep. Pure bending creep occurs when a circular tube is bent to a desired moment and held at that moment for a period of time. It was found that the magnitudes of the creep curvature and ovalization of tube cross-section increase faster with a higher hold moment than that with a lower one. Due to continuously increasing curvature, the circular tubes eventually buckle. Finally, a theoretical form was proposed in this study so that it can be used to describe the relationship between the creep curvature and time. Theoretical simulations are compared with the experimental test data, showing that good agreement between the experimental and theoretical results has been achieved.
The purpose of this paper is to present failure analysis, of the heat exchanger tube in a district heating system. SS304 stainless steel is used, as material for the heat exchanger tube. The heat exchanger operates in a soft water environment containing a small amount of chloride ions, and regularly repeats operation and standstill period. This causes concentration of chloride ions on the outer surface of the tube, as well as repeat of thermal expansion, and shrinkage of the tube. As a result of microscopic examination, cracks showed transgranular as well as branched propagation, and many pits were present, at the initiation point of each crack. Energy disperstive spectroscopy analysis showed Fe and O peak, as well as Cl peak, meaning that cracks were affected by Cl ion. Failure of the tube was caused by chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking by thermal stress, high temperature, and localized enrichment of chloride ions.
The heat and mass transfer on two kinds of tube surfaces (bare stainless steel tube and Teflon coated tube) in steam-air mixture flow are experimentally studied to obtain design data for the heat exchanger of the latent heat recovery from flue gas. In the test section, 3-tubes are horizontally installed, and steam-air mixture is vertically flowed from the top to the bottom. The pitch between tubes is 67mm, the out-diameter of tube is 25.4mm, and the thickness is 1.2mm ; blockage factor (cross sectional tube area over the cross sectional area of the test section) is about 0.38. All of sensors and measurement systems (RTD, pressure sensor, flow-meter, relative humidity sensor, etc.) are calibrated with certificated standard sensors and the uncertainty for the heat transfer measurement is surveyed to have the uncertainty within 7%. As experimental results, overall heat transfer coefficient of the Teflon (FEP) coated tube is degraded about 20% compared to bare stainless tube. The degradation of overall heat transfer coefficient of Teflon coated tube comes from the additional heat transfer resistance due to Teflon coating. Its magnitude of heat transfer resistance is comparable to the in-tube heat transfer resistance. Nusselt and Sherwood numbers on Teflon (FEP) coated surface and bare stainless steel surface are discussed in detail with the contact angles of the condensate.
Corrosion behaviors of laser-welded super duplex stainless steel (SDSS) tubes after exposure to an actual power plant environment for one year and those of fin-tube welded SDSS were evaluated. Results showed that corrosion damage on the back side of the SDSS tube in the direction of hot air was higher than that on the front side regardless of weldment location. However, corrosion damage showed no difference between weldment and base metal due to recovery of phase fraction in the weldment through post weld heat treatment (PWHT). Nevertheless, the SDSS tube showed severe corrosion damage along grain boundary due to surface phase transformation (δ → γ) and Cr2N precipitation caused by PWHT with a high N2 atmosphere. Corrosion resistance of the SDSS tube was recovered when degraded surface was removed. Corrosion sensitivity of a fin-tube increased significantly due to pre-existing crevice, unbalanced phase fraction, and σ phase precipitation adjacent to the fusion line. Although corrosion resistance was improved by recovered phase fraction and sufficient dissolution of σ phase during PWHT, corrosion reaction was concentrated at the pre-existing crevice. These results suggest that welding conditions for fin-tube steel should be optimized to improve corrosion resistance by removing pre-existing crevice in the weldment.
In this paper, we have investigated the characteristics of the magnetic abrasive using sludge on polishing of internal finishing of seamless stainless steel (STS304) tube applying magnetic abrasive polishing. Either white alumina (WA) or green carborundum (GC) grain was used to resin sludge at a low temperature, and the sludge of magnetic abrasive powder was synthesized and crushed into 200 meshes. Surface roughness was measured before and after polishing, and more than 40% of improvement of surface roughness was achieved when WA grain was used under a specific condition. Even though some degree of surface roughness due to deeper scratches still exist, but the result showed a prospective magnetic abrasive polishing using sludge with WA or GC grains.
The influences of some casting conditions on bonding ratio and state at bonding zone of stainless steel-cast iron dual tube produced by centrifugal casting process were investigated to estimate fabrication technics. 1) Bonding ratio is increasing such as increasing of inner surface temperature of outer metal(stainless steel STS 304), if pouring temperature of inner metal (cast iron) is constant. 2) The more pouring temperature of inner metal (cast iron) increase, the more bonding ratio increase when inner surface temperature of outer metal (cast iron) is constant. 3) As the mold rotary speed is increase, the hatching area of bonding map (perfect bonding area) goes down to the low pouring temperature of inner metal. 4) In order to predict bonding state of two different metal, we are able to make and use the bonding map about casting conditions such as inner surface temperature of outer metal, pouring temperature of inner metal and mold rotary speed.
MgB$_2$samples have been prepared by a stoichiometry mixture of Mg and B inside stainless steel tubes(Commercial Stainless Steel Tube Enveloping Technique). XRD data show that there are no second phases like MgO. The transition temperature of specimens is 37.5 K with a sharp transition width of ΔTc within 1K. From magnetic hysteresis measurement, flux jump was shown up to 15K, which was higher than that of samples by other methods. We have concluded that the flux jump is mainly affected by impurities and second phases.
