  • Parametric min-cuts is an object proposal algorithm, which can be used for accurate image segmentation. In parametric min-cuts, foreground seeds generation plays an important role since the number and quality of foreground seeds have great effect on its efficiency and accuracy. To improve the performance of parametric min-cuts, this paper proposes a new framework for foreground seeds generation. First, to increase the odds of finding objects, saliency detection at multiple scales is used to generate a large set of diverse candidate seeds. Second, to further select good-quality seeds, a two-stage cascaded ranking classifier is used to filter and rank the candidates based on their appearance features. Experimental results show that parametric min-cuts using our seeding strategy can obtain a relative small pool of proposals with high accuracy.

  • To elucidate the roles of phospho-IkB expression in the development and progression of EAE, we investigated the expression of phospho-IkB in the central nervous system (CNS) of rats during experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) using immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis. In Western blot analysis, the increased expression of phospho-IkB went parallel to severity of EAE. The expression of phospho-IkB increased significantly at the peak stage of EAE followed by gradual decrease. Immunohistochemical studies showed that the phospho-IkB immunoreactivity was mainly expressed in inflammatory cells (macrophages, T cells) and glial cells (astrocytes, microglial cells) at the peak stage of EAE and disappeared at the recovery stage. These findings suggest that the phosphorylation of IkB is closely associated with autoimmune inflammation in the CNS and plays an important role in the initiation and progression of EAE.

  • The adoption of technology has always been of interest to academicians and practitioners of the field of Management Information System. This is so because without proper and adequate adoption, technology-no matter how beneficial or advanced it may be-will be of little value to users. Numerous researches, such as the researches of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) or the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), had been conducted to understand the human nature in association with the adoption or rejection of technologies that have bombarded the users. The coming of smart technologies (i.e., smart phones and devices), however, seems to have fundamentally changed the environment for adoption. The ubiquity combined with mobility of technology, especially when it comes to mobile apps, seem to make the old PC era of two-stage-pre and post-adoption models obsolete. A new model of adoption that identifies the determinants of technology acceptance and continuance is needed for the smart age. To this end, this paper undertakes an empirical study, by analyzing 229 users of Social Networking Service (SNS) mobile apps, to identify the role of user experience on the multi-stage adoption of technology, and provides results that User Experience (UX) plays the crucial role of bridging the separate stages of pre and post adoption of technologies. The paper concludes by providing practical implications of the new model as it relates to mobile apps and technologies, and recommendations for further studies to get a better understanding of technology adoption in the smart age.

  • Diaspora studies has become one of the fastest growing field in the humanities over the past several decades, and the use of term diaspora has been widening to include almost any population on the move. Diaspora literature not only mirrors but actively incorporates this new notion of diaspora with characters "at the threshold" navigating new territories and identities. Querying how diaspora studies intersects with theatre and performance, this paper attempts to probe how recent Korean American drama parallels and promotes diaspora studies' radical departure from traditional notions of identities and territories. For this purpose, this essay 1) examines theoretical affinities between diaspora studies and performance studies 2) investigates how Sung Rno's plays, Cleveland Raining and wAve, explore and embody multiple and evolving meanings of Korean diaspora on the stage 3) examines how theatre can create the third space that transcends both Korean and American nationalism and 4) speculates possibilities of reframing Asian American Studies as Asian diaspora studies. Korean American characters in Rno's play redirect diasporic identities, as their concern gradually moves from "where I come from" to "where I go to." Instead of remaining in the dark as a mere spectator, both Rno and his characters choose to be 'on' the stage where they can imagine, perform, and realize (however temporarily) "unimaginable community" by confronting their own social, political, and cultural ambivalence. Stage, the threshold between reality and fiction, Korea and America, and past and future, becomes their true 'home' where they incubate and precipitate "nation in transformation" that Yan Haiping argues for as "another transnational."

  • Purpose: This descriptive research study is intended to develop practical strategies for enhancing the quality of elderly care by evaluating the levels of ageism and compassion competence among clinical nurses and their impact on geriatric nursing performance. Methods: This study involved 162 nurses who provided direct care to elderly patients in a department with many such patients. Of the 161 returned questionnaires, 150 were analyzed, excluding 11 that had insincere or missing responses. To analyze the data, a comprehensive approach was employed using the IBM SPSS 27.0 program that included calculations of frequency and percentage, mean, and standard deviation, as well as more complex statistical tests such as the independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and hierarchical linear regression analysis. Results: Compassion competence was significantly positively correlated with elderly care and negatively correlated with ageism. This study conclusively demonstrates that compassion competence among nurses in geriatric nursing situations plays a crucial role in provision of quality nursing grounded in understanding and respect for the elderly. Consequently, it is imperative to develop educational strategies tailored to each career stage of nursing practice to further enhance effective elderly care. Conclusion: This study conclusively demonstrates that compassion competence in geriatric nursing situations plays a crucial role in provision of quality nursing grounded in understanding and respect for the elderly. • Global climate change exerts adverse effects on maize production. Among abiotic stresses, drought stress during the tasseling stage (VT) can increase anthesis-silking intervals (ASI) and decrease yield. We performed an evaluation of ASI and yield using a drought-sensitive line (Ki3) and a drought-tolerant line (Ki11) to analyze the correlation with ASI and yield. Moreover, the de novo data of Ki11 were analyzed to find putative novel transcripts related todrought stress in tropical maize. A total of 182 transcripts, with a log2 ratio >1.5, were found by comparing drought conditions to a control. The top 40 transcripts of high expression levels in the de novo analysis were selected and analyzed with PCR. Of the 40 transcripts, six novel transcripts were detected by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) using seedling and VT stage samples. Five transcripts (transcripts_1, 12, 34, 35, and 40) were up-regulated in the Ki11 shoot at seedling stage, and transcripts_1, 12, and 40 were up-regulated at the re-watering stage after 12 h of drought stress. The transcripts_32 and 34 were up-regulated at the VT stage. Hence, transcript_34 possibly plays a significant role in drought tolerance during the seedling and VT stages. The transcript_32 was identified as chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) by Pfam domain analysis. The function of the other transcripts remained unknown. Further characterization of these novel transcripts in genetic regulation will be of great value for the improvement of maize production.

  • In-cylinder spray flow motion plays an important in the adjustment of mixture preparation with a fundamental spray characteristics and in-cylinder flow field well in direct-injection gasoline engine. In this study, the fundamental spray characteristics such as mean drop size, velocity distribution, spray angle were measured and in-cylinder spray flow motion was visualized in order to optimize intake port, piston top land and combustion chamber shapes in the development stage of mass-produced G야 engine. For these experiments, the PDPA measurements and Mie scattering technique were used for detailed spray characteristics and in-cylinder spray motions were obtained by use of ICCD camera through the single-cylinder optical engine. From the experimental results, the test injector shows a good low-end linearity between the dynamic flow and fuel injection pulse width and the fuel spray of 20mm or less in SMD with good spray symmetry. In addition, the in-cylinder tumble flow has more effect on the homogeneous mixture formation than that of in-cylinder swirl flow at early injection mode and the in-cylinder swirl flow plays a better role of stratified mixture preparation than tumble flow at late injection mode.

  • Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) induces gene silencing in a sequence-specific manner by a process known as RNA interference (RNAi). The RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) is a multi-subunit ribonucleoprotein complex that plays a key role in RNAi. VIG (Vasa intronic gene) has been identified as a component of Drosophila RISC; however, the role VIG plays in regulating RNAi is poorly understood. Here, we examined the spatial and temporal expression patterns of VIG-1, the C. elegans ortholog of Drosophila VIG, using a vig-1::gfp fusion construct. This construct contains the 908-bp region immediately upstream of vig-1 gene translation initiation site. Analysis by confocal microscopy demonstrated GFP-VIG-1 expression in a number of tissues including the pharynx, body wall muscle, hypodermis, intestine, reproductive system, and nervous system at the larval and adult stages. Furthermore, western blot analysis showed that VIG-1 is present in each developmental stage examined. To investigate regulatory sequences for vig-1 gene expression, we generated constructs containing deletions in the upstream region. It was determined that the GFP expression pattern of a deletion construct (${\Delta}-908$ to -597) was generally similar to that of the non-deletion construct. In contrast, removal of a larger segment (${\Delta}-908$ to -191) resulted in the loss of GFP expression in most cell types. Collectively, these results indicate that the 406-bp upstream region (-596 to -191) contains essential regulatory sequences required for VIG-1 expression.

  • The foot plays a vital role in standing and gait. This function results from harmonious interaction of bones, joints, and soft tissue. An imbalance or a defect in such structures can lead to impaired function of the foot. The mid foot, composed of cunieforms, navicular and cuboid bone, plays a vital role in maintaining longitudinal and transverse arches and injury or defects to this region can cause instability of the foot. This paper reports a case of complex foot injury; soft tissue defect of dorsum of foot, and medial and intermediate cuneiform bone defect, reconstructed in a single stage using vascularized osteocutaneous fibular free flap. Segmented to fit the defects of medial and intermediate cuneiform bones and a skin paddle providing adequate coverage, restored the stability to the arches and function of the midfoot. The fibula osteocutaneous free flap has appealing characteristics for reconstruction of the foot and the complex mid foot injuries can be considered to the long list of indications.
