  • Soil and rock were yielded during construction of subway in Taegu. Produced rock is a kind of a sedimentary rock with low strength and low durability of shrinkage. So it is difficult using for resources engineering. But in our country, it is very important to use material resources due to lack of natural resources. In this study, after cracking sedimentary rock like black shale and red shale, they are compared with granite which usually used road constriction field to investigate property of use for road construction. Consequently, the engineering character of origin rock is satisfactory, but the soundness test, black shale and red shale are less than KS 12.9%, 37.5% respectively. The result of concrete freezing-thawing test shows that the strength among three materials is not a wide difference but red shale has relatively low strength. The result of asphalt freezing-thawing test with 50 cycles indicates that the stability of red shale in lower than KS 484~561kg on base course, 336~375kg on surface course respectively. A further research should be needed for propriety to the material of shale.

  • The objective of this study is to discover how the performance of service is perceived by those who receive the services. For the purpose of this study, perception on service performance is defined as "the perception of the changes in daily life as a result or in the course of using Cultural Welfare Services, i.e., the users' own perception of the tangible changes made through the community experience, the perception of others arising from interaction within the community, and the perception of future social relations or vision of the future." The study was conducted by using the qualitative research method of phenomenological approach aimed at understanding the essential aspects of interpersonal phenomena as they occur in a sociocultural context. The outcomes of the study that users' perception on performance of Cultural Welfare Services is principally "a process of enabling users who have hitherto led a life devoid of meaning and values to explore the opportunities of changing the course of life by awakening their cultural sensitivity." With regard to the essence of performance, which is a higher category, the analyses have led to the following findings: "perception of 'me' within the community", "emotional stability acquired in the course of task performance", "perception of a new 'me' through community activities", "perception of 'others' face to face with me", and "exploration of opportunities for a new life".

  • Asphalt pavements have to perform under the conditions of heavily-loaded vehicles due to the industrialization and large temperature variance between the summer and the winter. Due to these factors, a characteristics change of early permanent deformation becomes a big issue, and to remedy this problem many research to use modified asphalt are being widely conducted. However, most of the modified asphalt is being paved after milling the surface course and applying tackcoating, and it is being used mostly for the repair and maintenance purpose rather than pavement of new national road. The purpose of this investigation is to obtain some fundamental data for the evaluation of the performance and long-term performance of the construction material mixtures by the laboratory test and field experiments. For the field experiment, 200m of two-lanes national road, that is being paved for the new national road under the direction of Pusan Regional Construction Management Office, was paved with SBS PMA and PSMA asphalt mixtures, which are an modified asphalt mixtures used for the surface course, on top of the base course paved with other modified asphalt mixtures. The remaining section of the new national road was paved with dense grade mixture. The laboratory tests assessed and analyzed the mixture characteristics by Marshall's stability test, strength tests and wheel-tracking test. On the basis of the evaluation result of the temperature control and roughness of the newly constructed road at the field experiment site, it is desired to evaluate and identify the most economic modified asphalt mixtures by long-term performance evaluation and LCC(Life Cycle Cost) analysis in order to apply the test result to the design of new road construction in the future.

  • The main aim of this study was to suppress the angular velocity against strong winds during storms and analyze the stability and performance of the phase plane method. The utilization of small-scale wind turbine system has become common in agriculture, houses, etc. Therefore, it is considered to be a scheme for preserving the natural energy or avoiding the use of fossil fuels. Moreover, settling small-scaled wind turbines is simpler and more acceptable compared to ordinary huge wind turbines. In addition, after converting the energy there is no requirement for distribution. Therefore, a much lower cost can be expected for small-scaled wind turbines. On the other hand, this system cannot be operated continuously because the small-scaled wind turbine consists of a small blade that has low inertia momentum. Therefore, it may exceed the boundary of angular velocity, which may cause a fault in the system due to the centrifugal force. The aim of this study was to reduce the angular velocity by controlling the stall factor. Stall factor control consists of two control methods. One is a shock absorber that is loaded in the junction of the axis of the blade of the wind turbine gear wheel and the other is pitch angle control. Basically, the stall factor itself exhibits nonlinear behavior. Therefore, this paper confirmed the feasibility of stall factor control in producing desirable performance whilst maintaining stability.

  • Background: We developed a novel interlocking three-dimensional (3D) miniplate design with an adjustable configuration. As this device is new, surgeons must become familiar with its application. This study evaluated the usability and learning curves associated with the novel interlocking 3D miniplate for mandibular fracture fixation. Methods: The study participants, nine plastic surgeons, were asked to apply an interlocking 3D miniplate and a standard miniplate to polyurethane mandible models. The participants had completed the Basic Craniomaxillofacial Osteosynthesis course during residency and had operated on craniomaxillofacial fractures within the past 5 years. They were instructed to place the interlocking 3D miniplate three times and the standard miniplate once. We assessed the time required for implant placement, the comfort level of the surgeons, and the biomechanical stability of the plates. Biomechanical testing was conducted by subjecting the mandible to forces ranging from 10 to 90 N and the displacement was measured. Results: The results indicate increasing comfort with each attempt at placing the interlocking 3D miniplate, with a significant difference between the first and third attempts. Additionally, a reduction in application time was noted with repeated attempts, suggesting improved efficiency. Biomechanical tests showed comparable stability between the tested plates. Conclusion: Multiple attempts at applying the interlocking 3D miniplate resulted in increased comfort and reduced application time. These findings indicate that, despite its novelty, the interlocking 3D miniplate is relatively straightforward to apply and has a short learning curve. However, surgeons must have specific qualifications to ensure proper training and minimize errors during placement.

  • Hox proteins containing DNA-binding homedomain act as transcription factors important for anteroposterior body patterning during vertebrate embryogenesis. However, the precise mechanisms by which signal pathways are transduced to regulate the Hox gene expression are not clear. In the course of an attempt to isolate an upstream regulatory factor(s) controlling Hox genes, protein kinase B alpha (Akt1) has been identified as a putative regulator of Hox genes through in silico analysis (GEO profile). In the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) dataset GDS1784 at the NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) site, Hox genes were differentially expressed depending on the presence or absence of Akt1. Since it was not well known how Akt1 regulates the specific Hox genes, whose transcription was reported to be regulated by epigenetic modifications such as histone acetylation, methylation etc., the expression of Gcn5, a histone acetyltransferase (HAT), was analyzed in wild type (WT) as well as in $Akt1^{-/-}$ mouse embryonic fibroblast (MEF) cells. RT-PCR analysis revealed that the amount of Gcn5 mRNA was similar in both WT and $Akt1^{-/-}$ MEFs. However, the protein level of Gcn5 was significantly increased in $Akt1^{-/-}$ MEF cells. The half life of Gcn5 was 1 hour in wild type whereas 8 hours in $Akt1^{-/-}$ MEF. These data all together, indicate that Gcn5 is post-transcriptionally down-regulated and the protein stability is negatively regulated by Akt1 in MEF cells.

  • To verify the usefulness of enzyme activity as a index for the stability or maturity of apple pomace composting. the succession of microbial populations using viable count procedure. and Vmax of ${\beta}$-glucosidase and cellobiohydrolase were measured. based on an increase in fluorescence as the nonfluorescent methylumbelliferyl substrates were enzymatically hydrolyzed, leading to the highly fluorescent methylumbelliferyl molecule 4-methylumbelliferone(MUF). The activities of these enzymes in the decomposition of carbohydrates were gradually decreased in the course of the time. Correlation between microbial population and enzyme activity was not significant with exception of fungi. and the fungi were represented in high density. This indicates that the fungi probably play a major role in composting of apple pomace.

  • The distribution of vanadium and iron ionic species in the presence of picolinate ligand has been simulated at various conditions with different pH values and compositions in the decontamination waste solution. In spite of variations of metal concentration in the decontamination solution, the shape of distribution diagrams were not changed greatly at both high (the molar ratio of picolinate to vanadium is 6) and low (the molar ratio is 3) LOMI decontamination conditions. However, in the solution of low-picolinate condition the shape of the distribution diagram of iron(II)-picolinate complexes was changed significantly. This phenomenon is attributed to the shortage of relative amount of picolinate ligand to iron existed in the solution, and originated from the difference in stability constants for complexes formed between vanadium(III) and iron(II) species with picolinate ligand. The distribution diagrams obtained in this study can be applied very usefully to the prediction or understanding the reaction phenomena occurred at various conditions in the course of the LOMI waste treatments such as an ion exchange operation.
