Stabilization and thermal conductivity measurement of MWCNT nanofluids by using the $3-{\omega}$ method (3-${\omega}$ 방법을 이용한 다중벽 탄소나노튜브 나노유체의 침전 안정성 및 열전도계수 측정에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The 3-omega (3-${\omega}$) method is utilized to measure the thermal conductivity of nanofluids. A metal line heater on a silicon nitride membrane bridge structure is microfabricated by a bulk silicon etching method. Localized measurement of the thermal conductivity within the nanofluids droplet is possible by the fabricated 3-${\omega}$ sensor. Time varying AC temperature amplitudes and thermal conductivities are measured to check the stability of the nanofluids containing multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Stabilities of MWCNT nanofluids prepared with different chemical treatments are compared. Acid treated MWCNT showed best dispersion stability in water while MWCNTs dispersed in water with surfactants such as Gum Arabic and Sodium dodecyl benzene sulfate showed clear sign of gravity dependence.

  • New time schemes based on the FEM were developed and their performances were tested with 2D wave equation. The least-squares and weighted residual methods are used to construct new time schemes based on traditional residual minimization method. To overcome some drawbacks that time schemes based on the least-squares and weighted residual methods have, ad-hoc method is considered to minimize residuals multiplied by others residuals as a new approach. And variational method is used to get necessary conditions of ad-hoc minimization. A-stability was chosen to check the stability of newly developed time schemes. Specific values of new time schemes are presented along with their numerical solutions which were compared with analytic solution.

  • Since a humanoid robot inherently suffers from instability and always risks tipping itself over, or topping to the ground, it is necessary to ensure high stability and reliability of walk. An unexpected ground condition is one of the principal factors of instability. This paper proposes a walk stabilization method consisting of a Fuzzy algorithm and geometry under uneven terrain. The ground reaction forces that are measured by the FSR sensors on the sole are used to check the ground condition and the robot posture. The effectiveness of proposed method is verified by computer simulations.

Strength characteristic transformation of weathered soil caused by freezing-thawing (동결 -융해에 따른 풍화토의 강도특성 변화)

  • It's strongly recommended to check upon the slope stability of soil nearby railroad, since the freezing-thawing repeat in long term may cause decrease of slope stability. The study is, therefore, focused on the strength characteristic transformation of soil, measuring it experimentally, throughout physical and mechanical tests operated by the freezing-thawing repeat tests. The sampling of weathered soil used for the embankment materials along the domestic railway lines are classified by parent-rock, and then collected after it in the first hand. It tells that Uniaxial strength and axial strain were decreased simultaneously as the frequency of freezing-thawing repeat increased and its range was reduced into 25~85 percentage off comparing to uniaxial strength of unfreezing-soils when about 100 times of freezing-thawing repeats occurred. Following the result of direct shear tests, the cohesion of freezing-soil with freezing-thawing repeats shows 11∼60 percentage less than that of unfreezing-soil but the change of internal friction angle of the soil is extremely slight, enough to ignore. As a result. it could be found that strength characteristic transformation has highly correlated with freezing-thawing repeat.

  • The railroad systems with the ballast tracks have been widely used for a long time. But recently, the use of the slab track is being increased gradually with a technical developments. So, this paper deals with the appliance of the slab tracks on the railroad bridges. Firstly, review the design criteria of the railroad bridges related to the slab tracks for the stability and serviceability, based on DIN and EURO code. Then, perform the analysis of the railroad prestressed concrete bridges, and check whether the results of the analysis satisfy the design criteria. Finally, find the construction condition of bridges that all the design criteria are satisfied. As a result, to maintain the stability and serviceability of the bridges, bridges must have some restrictions, including a time of installation of the slab tracks. So, the construction schedule for the erection of the bridges will be carefully considered in case of the concrete railroad bridges with the slab tracks.

  • According to development of method and device of Finite Element Analysis, the strength of welded joint is demonstrated by Finite Element Analysis not classical calculations. On the FEA, all of the joints for carbody are assumed to be ideal connections and the yield stress of welded joint is assumed to be the same to base metal. On these assumption, FEA is appropriate to evaluate the overall stability and strength of whole carbody. The classical calculation is appropriate to evaluate strength of specific welded joint and to determine the weld method and properties. Some project request strength calculation of the specific welded joints in addition to FEA, because of the demonstration of stability. The objective of this paper is the check of the consistency of the FEA result for the welded joints by the stress comparison between Detailed FE Model and classical calculation and the evaluation of the reliability of FEA result.

  • Current steel pile foundation design is bared an WSD, but the reliability based design method is more rational than the WSD. For this reason, this study proposes a reliability Index of the pile foundation by LFD which is most common type of pile foundation, and also proposes the theoretical bases of nominal safety factors of stability analysis by introducing the reliability theory. The measured bearing capacity data are analyzed to the descriptive statistics and classified into the four models of uncorrelated -normal(UNNO), uncorrelated -nonnormal(UNNN), correlated -normal(CONO), and correlated nonnormal (CONN). This study presents the comparisons of reliability index and check points using the AFSOM with respect to the four models as well as BASIC program.

Lateral buckling of reinforced concrete beams without lateral support

  • Reinforced concrete beams possess variable flexural and torsional stiffnesses due to formation of cracks in the tension area along the beam. In order to check the stability of the beam, it is thus more appropriate to divide the beam into a finite number of segments for which mean stiffnesses and also bending moments are calculated. The stability analysis is further simplified, by using these mean values for each segment. In this paper, an algorithm for calculating the critical lateral buckling slenderness ratio for a definite load level, in a reinforced concrete beam without lateral support at the flanges, is presented. By using this ratio, the lateral buckling safety level of a slender beam may be checked or estimated.

  • Based on the one-dimensional stability analysis, the self-excited oscillation in hydraulic power generating systems was studied by a simple experiment and numerical simulation. It was shown that a cavity in a conical diffuser can cause surge. With the diffuser, a high amplitude and low frequency oscillation occurs at low cavitation number. This oscillation was not observed with the straight pipe. It was confirmed that the diffuser effect of the draft tube can be the cause of the full load surge in hydraulic power system. Numerical results were also analyzed to check the validity of the one-dimensional stability analysis.

  • This paper presented to design a robust turbo-generator control system using {{{{ { H}_{$\infty$ } }}}} control synthesis for improving small-signal stability. Application study of{{{{ { H}_{$\infty$ } }}}} control synthesis is more appropriate in this system since a turbo-generator system is usually operated under circumstance of unmeasurable modelling uncertainty and external disturbance. The{{{{ { H}_{$\infty$ } }}}} control theory was briefly reviewed for good understanding and the reasonable approach. The design results are simulated for a case study and to check the system performance in comparison with currently operating Lead/Lag filtered PSS performance.
