  • Damping information is required to analyse heat exchangers for flow-induced vibration. The most important energy dissipation mechanisms in heat exchanger tubes are related to the dynamic interaction between tube and support. In liquids, squeeze-film damping is dominat. Simple experiments were carried out of a two-span tube with one intermediate support to investigate the effects of tube-support parameters, such as: tube-support thickness, diametral clearance, tube eccentricity, tube span length, location of tube-support, and nature of dynamic interaction between tube and tube-support. The results show that squeeze-film damping is much larger for lateral-type motion than for rocking-type motion at the support. Eccentricity was found to be very important. Diametral clearance, support thickness and frequency are also very relevant. The effects of these parameters on squeeze-film damping are formulated and proposed in a semi-empirical expression.

  • Electro-Rheological (ER) fluid is applied to a controllable squeeze film damper (SFD) for stabilizing a flexibly supported rotor system. ER fluid is a class of functional fluid whose yield stress varies according to the applied electric field strength, which is observed as viscosity variation of the fluid. In applying ER fluid to a SFD, a pair of rings of the damper can be used as electrodes. When the electrodes are divided into a horizontal pair and a vertical one, the SFD can produce damping force in each direction independently. A prototype of the directionally controllable SFD was constructed and its performance was experimentally and numerically investigated in the present work.

  • Squeeze film dampers (SFDs) are designed and analyzed for radial superconducting bearings. The designed SFDs are mounted on the superconductors submerged in liquid nitrogen such that the dampers should supply additional damping to the relatively underdamped superconducting bearing support . Basic theory of SFD assembled with superconductors is introduced. Rotordynamic simulations are provided to support the feasibility of the superconducting bearings mounted on SFDs for a horizontal flywheel energy storage system.

  • The present paper proposes a new type of an electro-rheological squeeze film damper (ER SFD) of which the damping capacity can be controlled by the application of electric field. The new ER .SFD- is sealed with slotted rings having electrodes at the inside of the constant gap. The ER SFD can provent the problem of electric short which might be occurred in a previous ER SFD. Reynolds lubrication equation for a Newtonian fluid and the end leakage equation for ER fluids are numerically solved to get the pressure distributions and the damping coefficients of the ER SFD. The results show that the damping coefficients greatly increase with increasing the yield shear stress of ER fluid. In addition, the unbalance response analysis of a flexible rotor supported on the new ER SFD implies that the rotor system can be operated with the minimum of rotor amplitude and force transmissibility by controlling the yield shear stress of ER fluids properly.

  • This paper represents that an enhanced genetic algorithm (EGA) is applied to optimal design of a squeeze film damper (SFD) to minimize the maximum transmitted load between the bearing and foundation in the operational speed range. A general genetic algorithm (GA) is well known as a useful global optimization technique for complex and nonlinear optimization problems. The EGA consists of the GA to optimize multi-modal functions and the simplex method to search intensively the candidate solutions by the GA for optimal solutions. The performance of the EGA with a benchmark function is compared to them by the IGA (Immune-Genetic Algorithm) and SQP (Sequential Quadratic Programming). The radius, length and radial clearance of the SFD are defined as the design parameters. The objective function is the minimization of a maximum transmitted load of a flexible rotor system with the nonlinear SFDs in the operating speed range. The effectiveness of the EGA for the optimal design of the SFD is discussed from a numerical example.

  • A theoretical approach is carried out to predict the quality factors of flexible modes of a microcantilever on a squeeze-film. The frequency response function of an inertially-excited microcantilever beam is derived using an Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The external force due to squeeze-film phenomenon is developed from the Reynolds equation. Slip boundary conditions are employed at the interfaces between the fluid and the structure to consider the gas rarefaction effect, and pressure boundary condition at both ends of fluid analysis region is enhanced to increase the exactness of predicted quality factors. To the end, an approximate equation is derived for the first bending mode of the microcantilever. Using the approximate equation, the quality factors of the second and third bending modes are calculated and compared with experimental results of previously reported work. The comparison shows the feasibility of the current approach.

  • This paper presents the property of the Squeeze Film Damper (SFD) using Magneto-Rheological fluid (MR fluid). The damping property of a SFD for a flexible rotor system varied according to vibration mode. MR fluid is known as a functional fluid with controllable apparent viscosity of the fluid by applied magnetic field strength. When the MR fluid is applied in the SFD, the SFD using MR fluid can effectively reduce vibrations of the flexible rotor in a wide range of rotating speed by control of the applied magnetic field strength. To investigate in detail the SFD using MR fluid, the SFD to support one mass was constructed and its performance was experimentally investigated in the present study. The damping property of the SFD using MR fluid has viscous damping by Newtonian fluid, but not Coulomb friction by Bingham fluid. Therefore, The system damped by the SFD can be considered as a linear system.

  • A new electro-rheological squeeze film damper (ER-SFD) has been sealed with slotted piston rings which have electrodes at the inside of the constant gap. The slotted ER-SFD can prevent the problem of electric discharge which might be occurred in the previous configuration of an ER-SFD. The current paper presents the extraction of linearized dynamic coefficients within small orbit where these coefficients are controlled by the application of electric strength. Test rig has been modified to isolate the damper section for dynamic coefficient extraction. The results show that rotordynamic coefficients, damping and inertia terms, increase with increasing supply voltages, while stiffness coefficients decrease with increasing supply voltages. notating speed of rigid shaft does not affect these coefficients.

  • The paper represents the stability of a rotor system with the squeeze film damper (SFD) using an electromagnet. The electromagnet is installed in the inner damper of the SFD. The proposed SFD has basically property of a conventional SFD and variable damping property according to variation of the applied electric current. Therefore, when the applied current controlled, the whirling vibration of the rotor system can be effectively reduced in a wide operational speed range. In the present work, the performance of the SFD was experimentally investigated according to changing the magnetic field strength. When the applied current increased, the whirling amplitude greatly reduced and the damping ratio also increased.

  • Four new types of squeeze film dampers have been experimentally investigated to develop a practical and effective damper for flexible rotors. The cylindrical bush damper was selected as the best one among them and applied in a test rotor supported on ball bearings. A stable running of the rotor exceeding the critical speed was observed.
