This paper presents investigation of damping characteristics of squeeze mode type MR (Magneto-Rheological) mount experimentally. Since damping property of the MR fluid is changed by variation of the applied magnetic field strength, squeeze mode type MR mount proposed in the study has variable damping characteristics according to the applied magnetic field s strength. In the present work, the performance of the mount was experimentally investigated according to the magnetic field strength and exciting frequencies. The experimental results present that the MR mount can effectively reduce the vibration in a wide range of frequency by controlling the applied electromagnetic filed strength. Viscous damping and stiffness coefficients of the MR mount tend to be changed according to the variation of the applied currents in this study and MR effect is reduced by increasing exciting frequency.

The dynamic characteristics of an ell-lubricated, short squeeze film damper (SFD) with a central feeding groove are derived based on a theoretical analysis considering the effect of a groove, and identified experimentally using an Active Magnetic Bearing (AMB) system as an exciter. In order to get the theoretical solution, the fluid film forces of the grooved SFD are analytically derived so that the dynamic coefficients of the SFD can be expressed in terms of its design parameters. For the experimental validation of the analysis, a test rig using an AMB as an exciter is proposed. As an exciter. the AMB represents a mechatronic device to levitate and position the test Journal without any mechanical contact, to generate relative motions of the Journal inside the tested SFD and to measure the generated displacements during experiments with fairly high accuracy. Using this test rig, experiments are extensively conducted with various values of clearance, which Is one of the most important design parameters. in order to investigate its effect on the dynamic characteristics and the performance of the SFD. Damping and Inertia coefficients of the SFD that are experimentally Identified are compared with the analytical results to demonstrate the effectiveness of the applied analysis. It Is also shown that the AMB is an ideal device for tests of SFDs.
Effect of matrix microstructure on creep behaviors of squeeze cast magnesium matrix composites was investigated. Aluminum borate whisker was used as reinforcement and AZ31, AS52 and Sr added AS52 Mg alloys were used for matrix alloys. The reinforcement was distributed homogeneously and defect-free composite was manufactured. Creep tests were carried out at the temperature of $150^{\circ}C$ under the applied stress of 50 and 100 MPa for Mg alloys and Mg MMCs, respectively. The creep resistance of Mg MMCs was in this order: AS52-Sr > AS52 AZ31 MMCs. Void initiation during creep mainly occurred at $Mg/Mg_{17}Al_{12}$ interface and propagation went along grain boundaries. On the other hand, $Mg_2Si$ phase was not attributed to the creep void initiation.
In this work, ultrasonic vibration (UV) and rheo-squeeze casting was first applied on the Mg alloy reinforced with long period stacking ordered (LPSO) structure. The semisolid slurry of Mg-Zn-Y alloy was prepared by UV and processed by rheosqueeze casting in succession. The effects of UV, Zr addition and squeeze pressure on microstructure of semisolid Mg-Zn-Y alloy were studied. The results revealed that the synergic effect of UV and Zr addition generated a finer microstructure than either one alone when preparing the slurries. Rheo-squeeze casting could significantly refine the LPSO structure and ${\alpha}-Mg$ matrix in $Mg_{96.9}Zn_1Y_2Zr_{0.1}$ alloy without changing the phase compositions or the type of LPSO structure. When the squeeze pressure increased from 0 to 400 MPa, the block LPSO structure was completely eliminated and the average thickness of LPSO structure decreased from 9.8 to $4.3{\mu}m$. Under 400 MPa squeeze pressure, the tensile strength and elongation of the rheocast $Mg_{96.9}Zn_1Y_2Zr_{0.1}$ alloy reached the maximum values, which were 234 MPa and 17.6%, respectively, due to its fine ${\alpha}-Mg$ matrix (${\alpha}1-Mg$ and ${\alpha}2-Mg$ grains) and LPSO structure.
Many computational researches have been performed about EHL film thickness in the contact between cam and follower in the engine valve train system. However, those computations do not explain the characteristics of dynamic film thickness which means squeeze film effect. Without the consideration of transient term in the Reynold's equation, the predicted film thickness from steady state condition has large difference from the actual film thickness. In this study, we have investigated the kinematic and dynamic simulations of rocker-arm valve train system. From the dynamic simulation, the applied load and the entraining velocity of the lubricant between cam and follower are obtained and with these values the dynamic film thickness is computed by Newton-Raphson method and compared with the steady state film thickness.
In the die casting process, the flow of liquid metal has significant influence on the quality of casting products and die life. For the optimal process design of front housing part of aircon compressor, various analyses were performed in this study by using computer simulation code, MAGMAsoft. The simulation has been focused on the molten metal behaviors during the filling and solidification stages for the sound casting products. Two cases of casting design that have different types of gating system are considered in the analysis. The potential sites where the casting defects may occur is examined by computer simulation and an improved design process is proposed. Also the effect of partial squeeze on the quality of casting products is considered and the optimal time lag after filling process is determined. For the die-stability, the effect of operational parameters such as die temperature, heat cycle and spot cooling on the die life has also been analyzed.

Research in heat transfer and solidification commonly involves experimentation and mathematical modeling with associated numerical analysis and computation. Inverse problems in heat transfer are part of this paradigm. During the solidification of metal casting, an interfacial heat transfer resistance exists at the boundary between the casting and the mold, and this heat transfer resistance usually varies with time. In the case of the squeeze casting the contact heat transfer resistance is decreased by pressure and ideal contact is almost accomplished. In the present work, heat transfer coefficient, which is inverse value of the heat transfer resistance, was used for convenience. A numerical technique, Non-Linear Estimation has been adopted for calculation of the casting/mold interfacial heat transfer coefficient during the squeeze casting process. In this method, the measured temperature data from experiment were used. The computational results were applied to the analysis of heat transfer and solidification.
