  • In this paper, we propose the low fractional spur phase-locked loop(PLL) with multiple phase-frequency detector(PFD). The fractional spurs are suppressed by using a new PFD. The new PFD architecture with two different edge detection methods is used to suppress the fractional spur by limiting a maximum width of the output signals of PFD. The proposed PLL was simulated by HSPICE using a 0.35m CMOS parameters. The simulation results show that the proposed PLL is able to suppress fractional spurs with fast locking.

  • Closed-die forging of the spur gears with circular are fillet has been analyses by using the upper-bound method. A kinematically admissible velocity field has been developed, wherein, the tooth profile consists of the involute curve and the circular arc fillet. In the analysis, the deformation regions have been divided into eight zones. A constant frictional stress has been assumed on the contacting surfaces Utilizing the formulated velocity field, numerical calculations have been carried out to investigate the effects of various parameters, such as module, number of teeth, addendum modification coefficient and friction factor, on the relative forging pressure of spur gears. As the result of numerical calculations, the relative forging pressure does not change so much against the variation of module. On the other hand, the relative forging pressure increases at the final filling stage as the addendum modification coefficient increases.

  • Nowadays, lower gear vibration and noise are necessary for drivers in automotive gearbox, which means that transmission gearbox should be optimized to avoid noise annoyance and fatigue before quantity production. Transmission error (T.E.) is the excitation factor that affects the noise level known as gear whine, and is also the dominant source of noise in the gear transmission system. In this paper, the research background, the definition of T.E. and gear micro-modification were firstly presented, and then different transmission errors of loaded torques for the spur gear pair were studied and compared by a commercial software. It was determined that the optimum gear micro-modification could be applied to optimize the transmission error of the loaded gear pair. In the future, a transmission test rig which is introduced in this paper is about to be used to study the T.E. after gear micro-geometry modification. And finally, the optimized modification can be verified by B&K testing equipment in the semi-anechoic room later.

  • Operating test of power-transmission plastic spur gears were performed inspecting both characteristics of friction-wear and endurance, and suggesting endurance improvement method that either drills internal holes of tooth or inserts metallic pin in the internal hole of tooth and verifying this newly-provided method. In case of acetal gears, amount of friction-wear is observed to increase by development of plastic deformation and increase of tooth stiffness due to brittle material property of acetal. To the contrary, in case of nylon gears, suggested method is shown to drop down the tooth temperature for about 3∼10$^{\circ}C$ than original gear, thus amount of wear is reduced by over 30% and operating lift prolonged by more than 200%. Hence, suggested method is proved to be practically applicable to the plastic gears made by soft polymers such as Nylon.

  • In this study, focusing on reducing a load in forming helical gears, the extrusion using two-step processes for manufacturing helical gear is proposed. The process is composed of the extrusion step in which spur gear to be used as a preform in next step is formed, and the torsion step in which the preform of spur gear is formed to helical gear. Upper-bound theory for the two-step process is applied and compared with the results of experiment. The result of upper-bound solution has a good agreement with that of the experiment and the FE analysis. The newly proposed method can be used as an advanced forming technique to remarkably reduce a forming load, to prolong a tool life, and to replace the conventional forming process of helical gears. Results obtained from the extrusion using two-step processes enable the designer and manufacturer of helical gear to be more efficient in this field.

  • Of all the many types of machine elements which exist today, gears are among the most commonly used. Many researches have been done to manufacture helical gears by cold forging and extrusion. Although cold forging and extrusion were applied to some bevel, spur, and helical gears, problems in connection with reducing forming load and tool life still make it difficult for the related methods to be commercialized. In this study, focusing on reducing load in forming helical gears, extrusion of helical gears by a two-step process is proposed. The process is composed of an extrusion step of spur gears used as preform and a torsion step of the preform to make helical gears. Upper-bound analysis for the two-step process is performed and compared with results of experiments. • In this paper, finite element analysis of a cycloidal pitch reducer for a 2 MW-class wind turbine is reviewed. The system is composed of one cycloid set, one spur gear set, an input shaft, an output shaft, and a housing. The system was also evaluated for stability by analyzing spur gear strength according to ISO 6336. An analysis of the natural vibration characteristics of the 2 MW-class wind turbine cycloid pitch reducer was performed with attention to critical speed with input mass unbalance, output mass unbalance, spur gear transmission error, cycloid gear transmission error, and excitation frequency.

  • A marine turning gear controls the position of the piston-crank mechanism by rotating the flywheel of the marine engine at a low speed, which is the main auxiliary machine that enables the disassembly and maintenance of the engine. In this study, the safety factor for surface durability and tooth bending strength was improved by the design modification of the marine turning gear based on the spur planetary gear. Angular velocity, torque, and efficiency of the turning gear were measured using a reliability evaluation tester, and a multibody dynamics model for analysis corresponding to the test results was developed. Finally, it was confirmed that the design improvements improved the tooth surface damage of the sun gear in the 3rd reduction stage.

  • In this study we carried out laboratory experiments to investigate the three-dimensional turbulent flows around a spur dike installed in a straight open channel flume. The experiments are conducted under the two different Froude numbers, 0.100 and 0.185. The three-dimensional instantaneous velocities are measured using the Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry (ADV) to obtain the time-averaged velocities and the turbulence stresses. The measured flow field reveal the existence of the recirculation zones downstream of the dike, which is characterized by high turbulence stresses near its boundaries. The results show that although the overall mean flow patterns between the low and high Froude number cases are very similar to each other, there exist moderate changes in the maximum dimensionless turbulence stresses and the maximum dimensionless bed shear stress with the increase of the Froude number.
