  • According to the Fire Services Act revised in 2005, it has been required to set up sprinkler systems to all floors to the newly builded apartments having above 11 floors. But, according to the Fire Services Act before 2005, it had been required to set up sprinkler systems from 16 floors to the top floors to the apartments having above 16 floors. This case is the accident that a victim was dead by the fire which is inferred as an accidental fire by a cigarette butt in a 17th floor apartment unit in an apartment having 17th floors and that the bereaved family called in question why the sprinklers non worked at the fire. Through the field investigation, we checked that the sprinklers worked well when the fire detectors at the 16th floor of the apartment were operated and that the sprinklers non worked when the fire detectors at the 17th floor of the apartment were operated. We made clear that the cause of the sprinkler non-working at the 17th floor is the programming error of the sprinkler controller.

  • Fire scenarios in a space $20.0m\;\times\;4.0m$ floor and 3.0m high were simulated by using computational fluid dynamics program (FDS 4.0.3) to investigate the effect of the combined operation of both sprinkler and vent systems, which are installed for cooling and blocking smoke which propagates beneath the ceiling of a horizontal corridor, on the temperature and smoke density of it. It was shown that the combined operation both sprinkler and vent systems was more effective than each operation for cooling and blocking smoke, the number of operating sprinklers was two because of corner effect of wall, and over-installed sprinklers deteriorated the effect of cooling and blocking smoke. This study showed that the case of two sprinklers and vent flow rate $3.0m^3/s$ in fire scenario was the most effective for cooling and blocking smoke. It was confirmed that the smoke downdrag occurs in operating sprinkler system, and the more smoke droplets produced by increasing fire size, the greater smoke downdrag occurred.

  • Lots of products stocked at a traditional market are made of rubbers, synthetic fibers and plastics which when on fire, emit high heat to easily ignite nearby inflammables. And shops are not divided by fireproof partitions but by combustible curtains, which contributes to a possibility of a conflagration. In this study, danger and weak factors on fire at a traditional market was analyzed. Non-existence of partition between shops and the height of piled inflammables are set as danger factors and change of extinguishing capacity of sprinklers was analyzed using fire dynamics simulator. As a result, it turned out that partitions between shops and high-piled inflammables reduced watering radius of sprinklers and increased the size of fire and distribution of temperature.

  • A rack-type warehouse has the advantage of storing a large amount in a small area by loading goods vertically. But in terms of fire risk, the fire load is very high, which can cause massive damage in the event of a fire. In the United States, research has been actively conducted to minimize the spread of vertical fires, and relevant standards have been established and operated. In Korea, research and related standards are insufficient to prevent the vertical spread of rack-type warehouse fires. In this study, an experimental study was conducted to prevent the vertical spread of a rack-type warehouse fire using a horizontal barrier and in-rack sprinklers. As a result of the test, the horizontal barrier considering the continuous flame prevented the vertical spread of the flame for a certain time. However, the horizontal barrier with continuous flame did not show the effect of preventing continuous flame. The combination of the horizontal barrier and the in-rack sprinkler prevented the vertical spread of fire effectively. In addition, the heat collecting effect through the horizontal barrier was shown and helped the early operation of the in-rack sprinklers.

  • While a performance based sprinkler design method has been widely used in UK and USA according to fire hazards of occupancies, Korean fire safety industry could not yet accept it due to nonstandardization on risk level of various occupancy. Even only two or three spray pattern sprinkler was produced in Korea fire safety industry, therefore, various spray pattern sprinklers have not yet introduced to major occupancies. Spray pattern sprinklers with one of two K value have been used in all occupancies in Korea Market. UK and USA's Fire industry should produced the spray sprinklers with various K-factors and protection area due to performance based sprinkler design requirement. Therefore the fire load density for main occupancies has been investigated in order to compare with installation standard in advanced countries. Eventually a lot of variations in orifice and K factors of standard heads were set up including special heads needed for high hazard areas such as large drop type, enlarged orifice type and early suppression fast response.

  • The thermal response of sprinkler is characterized by the response time index(RTI). The RTI represents the product of the thermal time constant for the heat responsive element of a sprinkler and the square root of the hot air velocity at plunge test. A plunge test is adapted for measuring RTI, wherein a sprinkler is suddenly immersed in the steady flow in the test section of a hot air tunnel. The method of measurements of the response parameters is presented.
