The ecological study of phytoplankton in Kyeonggi Bay, Yellow Sea Il. Light intensity, Transparency, Suspended substances (西海 京畿 植物플랑크톤에 對한 생態學的 硏究 II. 光度, 透明度, 浮游物質)

  • To clarify the light condition which influence phytoplankton ecology in Kyeonggi Bay, light intensity, compensation depth, extinction coefficient, transparency and suspended substances are studied from May 1981 to September 1982.Light intensities lie within adequate values for the phytoplankton growth from spring to autumn. However, in the winter season the light intensities show less than 4.8mw/$\textrm{cm}^2$ on the surface resulting lower than optimum irradiance. Light intensity could be a limiting factor for phytoplankton growth in winter. Compensation depths seasonally varied over an annual period in this study. Especially, in winter, compensation depths are confined to only 1-2m below the surface. Extinction coefficient(K) values are relatively high over an year cycle. K values is highest in winter and lowest in summer. Transparency shows seasonal variation. Tansparency is high in summer and low in winter. Thus low light intensity, low compensation depth, low transparency and high extinction coefficient in winter are due to the high turbidity and high concentrations of suspended substances. High concentrations of S.S. in winter result from the sediments and detritus resuspended by the winter turbulence induced by the strong winter winds and the convectional mixing. In summer, good light condition and low turbidity may result from the thermal stability of water mass preventing the resuspension of sediment particles.

Ecological Studies on the Asan Reservoir. 1. Physicochemical chracteristics and Trophic Status (아산호의 생태학적 연구 1.이화학적 특성과 영양상태)

  • To evaluate the eutrophication status of the Asan Reservoir in Korea, physicochemical parameters were analyzed for samples of 19 sampling stations collected in the period from March to November in 1997. Water temperature was in the range of $8.3{\sim}35.3{\circ}^C$, with thermocline appearing in summer. Dissolved oxygen also showed similar verticle variation to temperature. Secchi depth was very shallow with a range of 0.1~1m. Suspended solids ranged from 11.3 mg/1 to 2143.3 mg/1, and seemed to be affected by the amount of rainfall and the standing stocks of phytoplankton. Nutrient concentrations were higher in tributaries, and decreased with downflow. Nutrients were low in the summer and early autumn when algal blooms occur, and high in the early spring and winter. The Trophic State Index showed that the Asan Reservoir is in a hypertrophic condition.

Taxonomic and Ecologic Studies on Ciliate Plankton in Pal'tang Reservoir, Korea (팔당호 섬모충 플랑크톤의 분류 및 생태학적 연구)

  • In order to understand the taxonomic and ecologic characteristics on ciliates plankton, surface water samples were collected once a weekly from March 2001 to December 2001 except once a monthly from December 2001 to January 2001 and twice a monttdy at February 2001 at Pal'tang reservoir in Korea. Totally 12 species belonging to 10 genera in 7 families of 6 order, were identified and all species new record in Korea. All of them had been recorded in eutrophic water bodies. Succession of dominant species occurred obviously according to seasonality. Large -sized Codonella cratera, Rimostrombidium lacustris, Strobilidium caudatum, Limnostrombidium viride, Pelagostrombidium fallax, Stylonychia sp., Pseudostrombidium plaktonticum and Phascolodon vorticella dominated during the period of outbreak of nanophytoplankton in winter to spring. However, small-sized Rimostrombidium hyalinum, rimostrombidium brachykinetum, Halteria gradinella and Vorticella convallaria occurred when the bacteria abundance increased in summer to autumn.

Decoupling of the Spatiotemporal Pattern of Agricultural Drought from that of Meteorological Drought in Korea (한국의 기상가뭄의 시공간 패턴으로부터 농업가뭄의 시공간 패턴 분리하기)

  • The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) regularly publishes various drought indices. However, most of these are meteorological drought indices that are not only difficult but often inappropriate to apply to agriculture. In this study, the meteorological drought index and the agricultural drought index were calculated for the representative points of South Korea during the same period, and the differences in geographical distribution were analyzed according to the characteristics of drought. Although the overall drought patterns estimated by multiple drought indices were similar, the differences were also confirmed due to the different simulation methods depending on the character of drought. Especially, agricultural drought index (ADI) showed higher accuracy in the agricultural sector than that of meteorological drought index (e.g., SPI, PN). In addition, the drought patterns in recent years analyzed by ADI were more severe in spring and early summer compared with normal year. In autumn and winter, drought was weaker than normal year. For the recent periods, inland areas had more droughts than coastal areas. Considering the specific drought indices for the individual sectors, it will be helpful to take measures against drought according to the individual characteristics.

Epidemiological Study of the Communicable Disease in Kang Won Area (강원도 농어촌 지역에 발생한 급성전염병의 역학적 고찰)

  • A epidemiological study was conducted by author on 925 official reported patients with the first grade legal communicable disease during the period from January 1969 to December 1970 in all area of Kangwon province. As the results of this study, tile following conclusion were obtained. A) Typhoid fever 1. Of all 925 patients surveyed, typhoid fever showed the highest rate as 50.7 percent. 2. Age group from 10 to 14 years old showed the highest rates 3. High epidemic period was from June to September. 4. As for the occupational distribution, unemployed showed the highest rate as 63.2 percent, followed by-21.1 percent in farmer and 9.4 percent in student. 5. Most of all patients(93.7%) were isolated in their own house 6. The morbidity rate was 16.0 per 100, 000 population and case fatality rate was 1.76 percent 7. The mean of the duration from onset to diagnosis and carnation were 11.7$\pm$7.1 days and 25.1$\pm$13, 8 days respectively. 8. Main diagnostic method was almost the clinical examination B) Dysentery 1, Of all 925 patients surveyed, dysentery showed 44.4 percent 2. Age group from 0 to 9 years old showed the highest rate 3. High epidemic period of this disease was from April to August 4. As for the occupational distribution, unemployed showed the highest rate as 73.9 percent, followed by 17.7 person in farmers and 7.0 percent in student 5. the attack rate of agricultural area was higher than of fishing area 6. The mean of the duration from onset to diagnosis and crating duration were 10.4$\pm$4.3 days and 15.7$\pm$8.8 days respectively. 7. The morbidity rate and case fatality rate were 21.8 per 100.000 population and 1.46 percent, respectively. 8. Most of all patients were isolated in own house 9. Most of all patients (97.6%) were diagnosed by the clinical examination C) Diphtheria 1. As for the age distribution, 0-4 years old group showed the highest rate as 44.4 percent followed by 27.7 percent in 5-9 years old group and 22.2 percent in 10-14 years old group 3. Epidemic season was almost in autumn, winter and spring 3. The morbidity rate was 0.96 per 100.000 population and case fatality rate was high as 26.6 percent 4. 66.6 percent of this disease was isolated in their own house and the others were admitted in hospital D) Paratyphoid fever 1. Most of all patients were attacked below 20 years old 2. Epidemic season was almost was almost in late summer 3. The morbidity rate was 0.53 per 100.000 population 4. The mean of the duration from onset to diagnosis and crating duration were 18.3$\pm$1.3 day and 13.7$\pm$0.2 day. respectively.

Daily Variations of Water Turbidity and Particle Distribution of High Turbid-Water in Paltang Reservoir, Korea (팔당호에서 수중 탁도의 일 변동과 고탁수의 입자 분포)

  • Daily monitoring was conducted to elucidate the changes in turbidity and distribution of particles in the turbid water of a river-type reservoir (Paltang Reservoir) from 1999 to 2001. Water turbidity and the particle distribution of turbid water were principally affected by meteorological factors particularly rainfall patterns and hydrological factors such as inflow and outflow. The mean concentration of turbidity was constant each year, with the concentration of less than 10 NTU accounting for 85%. Seasonal characteristics were remarkable, with winter and spring having < 5 NTU, autumn 5 ${\sim}$ 10 NTU, and summer > 20 NTU. Unlike hydrological changes, maximum turbidity was observed from late July to early August and continuously increased from 1999 to 2001. In particular, the maximum turbidity of reservoirs remarkably increased toward the lower part of reservoir in 2001. Discharge and turbidity increased or decreased slowly in 1999; in contrast, turbidity rapidly increased in the early rainfall period of 2000 and 2001 but later decreased as discharge increased. In the particles of turbid water, clay ingredients were more densely distributed and more dominant in all stations. Of the total particles in turbid water, clay constituted 63.9${\sim}$66.6% and silt 33.4${\sim}$36.1% to account for a combined total of 98.9 ${\sim}$ 100%. Sand made up less than 1.1%. The turbidity of river-type reservoir was also found to be mainly affected by the biomass of plankton in a non-rainfall period. During a rainfall period, however, the quantity and relative ratio of inorganic particles depending on the soil components affected turbidity.

Temporal and Spatial Variations in Sea Surface Temperature Around Boryeong off the West Coast of Korea From 2011-2012 (2011-2012년 서해 보령연안 수온의 시공간적 변동)

  • Temporal and spatial variations in surface water temperature were studied using data from temperature monitoring buoys deployed at 47 stations around Boryeong from 2011-2012 off the west coast of Korea. Temperature fluctuations are predominant at diurnal and semidiurnal periods for all seasons, and their amplitudes are large in spring and summer but small in autumn. The maximum annual change in air temperature takes place on August 2nd and August 22th for water temperature, which means the phase for air temperature precedes water temperature by 20 days. The diurnal period of water temperature fluctuation is predominant around Daecheon and Muchangpo Harbors, with the semidiurnal period around Wonsan Island, and the shallow water constituent period on the estuary around Daecheon River. On the whole, air and water temperatures fluctuate with wind. Spectral analyses of temperature records show significant peaks at the 0.5, 1 and 15 day marks with 7-10 day periods of predominant fluctuations. Cross-correlation analyses for the temperature fluctuation show that the waters around Boryeong can be classified into four areas: a mixed water zone around the southeast side of Wonsan Island, an off-shore area to the west, an off-shore area to the south and a coastal area along the shore from Song Island to Muchangpo Harbor.

Analysis of Long-Term Wave Distribution at Jeju Sea Based on SWAN Model Simulation (SWAN모델을 이용한 제주해역 장기 파랑분포 특성 연구)

  • Long-term wave distribution at Jeju sea is investigated by a numerical simulation based on the thirdgeneration wave model SWAN (Simulating WAves Nearshore). The Jeju sea which retains relatively high wave energy density among Korean coastal regions is considered to be a suitable site for wave power generation and the efficiency of wave power generation is closely related to local wave characteristics. The monthly mean of a large-scale long-term wave data from 1979 to 2002, which is provided by Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute. is used as the boundary condition of SWAN model simulation with 1km grid. An analysis of wave distribution concentrates on the seasonal variation and spatial distribution of significant wave heights, mean wave directions and mean wave periods. Significant wave heights are higher in winter and summer and the west sea of Jeju appears relatively higher than east's. The highest significant wave height occurs at the northeast sea in winter and the second highest significant wave height appears at the southeast sea in summer, while the significant wave heights in spring and autumn are relatively low but homogeneous. The distribution of wave directions reveals that except the rear region influenced by wave refraction, the northwest wave direction is dominant in summer and the southeast in winter. Wave periods are longer in summer and winter and the west sea of Jeju appears relatively longer than east's. The longest wave period occurs at the west sea in winter, and in summer it appears relatively homogeneous with a little longer period at the south sea.

A Study on the Microflora of the Han River(II) The phytoplanktons and its seasonal variaton in the area of the Chun-chon and the Chung-pyong reservoir of the Han River (한강의 Microflora에 관한 연구 (제2보) 춘천 및 청평정수지를 중심으로 한 한강의 식물성 planktond과 그 계절적 소장)

  • The Han River was investigated monthly from April through September, 1967 at Chun-chon reservoir, Shin-yean, So-yang, Chung-pyong reservoir, Yang-soo-ri and Gi-doo-won to clarify the phytoplankton and to study its seasonal variation. At the same time, vertical distribution of phytoplankton was also studied from June through September at Chun-chon and Chung-pyong reservoir. The results obtained are as follows: As the environmental conditions, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and transparency were determined. The plankton samples collected from six stations were identified and classified by Engler's classification system. It resulted in 4 phyla, 4 classes, 3 subclasses, 13 orders, 27 families, 5 tribes, 71 genera, 222 species, 1 subspecies, 51 varieties and 2 forms. The total number of phytoplankton identified was 276. Of them, 84 species, 1 subspecies 26 varieties, 2 forms were recorded in this paper for the first time. Considering with the habitat of the total number of phytoplanktons, the highest percentage of Limnoplankton existed in the Chung-pyong reservoir. It suggests that hte Chung-pyong reservoir is becoming to have the character of lake. The planktons appeared commonly during six months at six station belong to Chrysophyta including 22 species in 11 genera. Among these 22 species, Navicula, consists of 6 species, was the most abundant. The number of species identified uniquely at each station were 5 species in the Chun-chon reservoir, 6 in Chung-pyong and Yang-soo-ri, 8 at Shin-yean, 11 at So-yang, and 18 at Gi-doo-won. The number of species occurred at all stations were 29 in spring, 42 in Autumn and during investigation period. The maximum production of total phytoplankton was generally shown in the late spring and the early fall with differences in quantity at six collecting statins. In the Chun-chon reservoir, the high concentration of approximately 1, 190, 000 cells per litter in the months of August and September was due to the increase of Chrysophyte genus, Melosira and the highest concentration of approximately 2, 000, 000 in July at Gi-doo-won was caused Chlorophyte genus, Secenedesmus. The Chun-chon reservoir of three years old was different from the Chung-pyong reservoir of 25 years old with respect to increase in Melosira genus in August and September. After the completion of the Ui-am reservoir, though there was an increase in total density, the number of species of phytoplankton was not changed. It suggests that Ui-am reservoir is similar to the Chun-chon reservoir under the influence of the latter. The density of total phytoplankton was generally high at the depth of 2m to 5m for the two reservoirs.

Soil Moisture Modelling at the Topsoil of a Hillslope in the Gwangneung National Arboretum Using a Transfer Function (전이함수를 통한 광릉 산림 유역의 토양수분 모델링)

  • Soil moisture is one of the important components in hydrological processes and also controls the subsurface flow mechanism at a hillslope scale. In this study, time series of soil moisture were measured at a hillslope located in Gwangneung National Arboretum, Korea using a multiplex Time Domain Reflectometry(TDR) system measuring soil moisture with bi-hour interval. The Box-Jenkins transfer function and noise model was used to estimate spatial distributions of soil moisture histories between May and September, 2007. Rainfall was used as an input parameter and soil moisture at 10 cm depth was used as an output parameter in the model. The modeling process consisted of a series of procedures(e.g., data pretreatment, model identification, parameter estimation, and diagnostic checking of selected models), and the relationship between soil moisture and rainfall was assessed. The results indicated that the patterns of soil moisture at different locations and slopes along the hillslope were similar with those of rainfall during the measurment period. However, the spatial distribution of soil moisture was not associated with the slope of the monitored location. This implies that the variability of the soil moisture was determined more by rainfall than by the slope of the site. Due to the influence of vegetation activity on soil moisture flow in spring, the soil moisture prediction in spring showed higher variability and complexity than that in early autumn did. This indicates that vegetation activity is an important factor explaining the patterns of soil moisture for an upland forested hillslope.
