Overloaded vehicles increase the maintenance cost of road structures, and they are a major factor in causing damage to the roads and bridges. In addition, overloaded vehicles compromise the braking capability of the vehicle; thus, threatening the safety of the driver. In order to prevent overloading of vehicles, the government is cracking down on the roads by using a device that measures the weight of vehicles. But this process is inconvenient because the place where the equipment is installed is far away from where the cargo is loaded. Due to the limitations of these fixed weighing devices, there is a growing need for technology that can monitor vehicle weight distribution and overload conditions in real time. In this work, we develop an onboard scale that can measure the load (weight) of trucks in real time. The onboard scale consists of high sensors, a signal processing unit, and a display, and it measures the load using height-displacement of the vehicle's leaf spring suspension.
The increase of road traffic niose in residential area has been considered to be a serious environmental problem to deteriorate a living condition. The understanding of noise environment in multiple family housing is needed for noise reduction. This study attempts to find out the characteristics of noise environment. For this purpose, the field survey has been carried out to investigate the noise environment(sound level, quality of sound) and the residents' responses(noiseness, annoyance) for noise environment based on 173 households living in 3 apartment compounds built in Pusan according to site location. The major findings are as follows : 1. The sound levels by road traffic noise were measured by dB(A) and dB(Lin). The sound levels were : 77.0dB(A), 86.6dB(Lin) in D-Apt, 73.3dB(A), 82.6dB(Lin) in K-Apt, and 59.1dB(A), 74.6dB(Lin) in M-Apt. Especially, the difference between dB(A) and dB(Lin) was very big in the cae of M-Apt with a barriers for traffic noise reduction. 2. The internal sound levels were shown the soudn attenuation by horizontal distance and by opening or shuting condition of windows.
Nowadays, with the advancement of computational mechanics, and vehicle dynamics simulation linked up with virtual testing laboratory(VTL) and virtual proving ground(VPG) technologies has become a useful method for analyzing numerous driving performances and diverse noise/vibration characteristics. In this paper, the analytical vehicle model based on multi-body dynamics theory was developed to investigate the vibration characteristics according to various road conditions. For the purpose, the whole vehicle parameters, each vehicle's part parameter, and part connecting elements such as spring, damper, and bush were measured by an experiment. Also, the vehicle dynamics model, which includes the front suspension, rear suspension, steering, front wheel, rear wheel, and body subsystems has been constructed for computer simulation. With the developed vehicle dynamics model, three forces and three moments measured at each wheel center were applied to evaluate and analyze dynamics and vibration characteristics for miscellaneous road conditions.
To understand particle pollution phenomena caused by vehicles, black carbon (BC) concentrations were continuously monitored using an aethalometer at a roadside in Seoul during the period of May 79 to 25, 2005. The BC concentration was highly fluctuated for a short duration, responding to the traffic situation on the road. The lowest BC concentration was observed between 2 and 5 a.m. The local highest BC concentrations were observed during the periods of both morning and evening rush hours. Change in traffic volume accounts for the trend of hourly averaged BC concentrations from the late evening to the morning. Particularly, the slower increase of BC concentration on Sunday seems to respond directly the lower traffic volume in the morning rush hours. From the comparison with a previous work, it is concluded that the BC concentration around midday hours might be dependent on the distance from a road.
Korea is considered to be a seasonal frozen soil area that is thawed in the spring, and most of the area is frozen in winter as to the characteristic of geography. In the current design codes for anti-freezing layer, the thickness of anti freezing layer is calculated by freezing depth against the temperature condition. Therefore, they have a tendency of over-design and uniform thickness without the considerations of thermal stability, bearing capacity and frost susceptibility of materials. So, it is essential for studying the appropriateness and bearing capacity besides the seasonal and mechanical properties of pavement materials to take a appropriate and reasonable design of the road structure. In this research, the evaluation of frost susceptibility on subgrade, ant-freezing layer, sub base was conducted by means of the mechanical property test and laboratory field road model downed scale experiment. The temperature, heaving amount, heaving pressure and unfrozen water contents of soil samples, the subgrade, anti-freezing layer, sub base soils of highway construction site, were measured to determine the frost susceptibility.
The goal of this research is to analyze interrelationship for layout of dwelling house and variation of its side plane by introducing concept of space in order to address as to how Korean traditional houses had been formed and varied in the middle of advancing modern city. In addition, this paper also has its meaning in a way that it identified how Korean traditional houses have been changed, and thus make residents more comfortable to live there by reviving their past characteristics, and make users have traditional food culture. Targeted area for this paper is limited to south-eastern area of Daegu such as Namsanjung, Myeongchijung, Sijangjung, Shinjung and Dalsungjng which was group dwelling houses of people of Chosun Dynasty during Japanese colonial rule' era ($1910{\sim}1945$). Among those places, the paper has chosen a place where Korea traditional houses were well preserved, variation of road and fields was less 1930s, and residential type is easy to effectively compared. As the result of this research, time when traditional cities were changed into new type of city residential area is believed to be around 1930s, and traditional residential area, through its transitional process, is believed to be changed to modern residential area. It also indicates that change of organizational road and fields directly had influence on change of houses.
PURPOSES : This paper presents a finite element model to accurately represent the soil-post interaction of single guardrail posts in sloping ground. In this study, the maximum lateral resistance of a guardrail post has been investigated under static and dynamic loadings, with respect given to several parameters including post shape, embedment depth, ground inclination, and embedment location of the steel post. METHODS : Because current analytical methods applied to horizontal ground, including Winkler's elastic spring model and the p-y curve method, cannot be directly applied to sloping ground, it is necessary to seek an alternative 3-D finite element model. For this purpose, a 3D FHWA soil model for road-base soils, as constructed using LS-DYNA, has been adopted to estimate the dynamic behavior of single guardrail posts using the pendulum drop test. RESULTS : For a laterally loaded guardrail post near slopes under static and dynamic loadings, the maximum lateral resistance of a guardrail post has been found to be reduced by approximately 12% and 13% relative to the static analysis and pendulum testing, respectively, due to the effects of ground inclination. CONCLUSIONS : It is expected that the proposed soil material model can be applied to guardrail systems installed near slopes.

This paper presents design and control of electronic control suspension(ECS) equipped with controllable magnetorheological(MR) damper for passenger vehicle. In order to achieve this goal, a cylindrical type MR fluid damper that satisfies design specification of a middle-sized commercial passenger vehicle is proposed. After manufacturing the MR damper with design parameters, their field-dependent damping forces are experimentally evaluated and compared with those of a conventional damper. A quarter-vehicle MR ECS system consisting of sprung mass, spring, tire, controller and the MR damper is established in order to investigate the ride comfort performances. On the basis of the governing equation of motion of the suspension system, five control strategies(soft, hard, comfort, sport and optimal mode) are formulated. The proposed control strategies are then experimentally realized with the quarter-vehicle MR ECS system. Control performances such as vertical acceleration of the car body and tire deflection are evaluated in frequency domains on random road condition. In addition, performance comparison of WRMS(weighted root mean square) of the quarter-vehicle MR ECS system on random road are undertaken in order to investigate ride comfort characteristics.
The purpose of this study is to clarify the site selection and orientation which have affected the western missionaries in construction of the first western house in Cheongju area. The results of this study are as follows; In the site selection, they chose Tap-Dong hill, by finding the higher position and taking a fine view of all natural elements, because the alters like the tomb of Confucius, the existing settlement Godang village, Dang Mt. are already located around this area. And also it was that they could easily go into Tap-Dong hill through the existing alleys, These alleys, generated near the original road of Tap-Dong hill, are developed to modern road system. These alleys affect western house's entrance and orientation. In deciding the orientation of house, korean people prefer to south and east by considering Feng-shui theory; otherwise western house, specially the first house has a southwestern aspect, because the western missionaries have a preference for the topography, entry, and view than a house facing south.
