  • The air spring is widely used in various fields such as a suspension system and an anti-vibration system because the natural frequency is kept constant regardless of the change in the load, spring constant is easy to change, and, vibration and shock isolation performance are excellent. The purpose of this study is to derive a nonlinear governing equation of an air spring, to analyze the effect of the various parameters on the dynamic stiffness of the air spring, and, to suggest a more efficient design method of an air spring system. In order to do so, this study investigates the impact of all the parameters that could affect the dynamic stiffness of the air spring while changing the excitation amplitude and the frequency with a developed governing equation.

  • Critical defects in pressure vessels and pipes are generally found in the form of a semi-elliptical surface crack, and the analysis of which is consequently an important problem in engineering fracture mechanics. Furthermore, in addition to the traditional single parameter K or J-integral, the second parameter like T-stress should be measured to quantify the constraint effect. In this work, the validity of the line-spring finite element is investigated by comparing line-spring J-T solutions to the reference 3D finite element J-T solutions. A full 3D-mesh generating program for semi-elliptical surface cracks is employed to provide such reference 3D solutions. Then some structural characteristics of the surface-cracked T and L-joints are studied by mixed mode line-spring finite element. Negative T-stresses observed in T and L-joints indicate the necessity of J-T two parameter approach for analyses of surface-cracked T and L-joints.

  • In this paper, using $\mu$ synthesis algorithm with structured uncertainty, we design controller and apply it for the Two-Inertia resonance(TMS: Two Mass Spring) system. The TMS system is one of the simplest models which generate a torsional vibration. In this system, it is required to design a controller achieving the control performance while suppressing the torsional vibration. Furthermore, when vibration frequency for the system is varying by reason of parameter variations, we should consider parameter variations in controller design. Then, we design two other controller schemes of the PI controller and the standard $H_{\infty}$ controller and compare these controllers with the controller designed by the $\mu$ synthesis robust control method by using simulations and experiments.

  • The recent issue of optical pickup actuators is to apply optical storage devices to mobile devices such as a cellular phone and PDA. It requires actuators to become smaller than conventional types. As the size becomes smaller, the magnetic force is reduced and the assembly of optical pickup actuators becomes more difficult. In addition, its dynamic characteristics are changed. In this paper, methods to improve magnetic forces and dynamic characteristics are suggested and the optimal result of the plate spring design is obtained. A diamond shape magnet and the fine pattern coil (FPC) are used to improve magnetic forces and damping elements are attached to decrease the peak magnitude of the mode instead of using structural damping, mostly for the purpose of improving the accuracy of the finite element simulation. To get more stable dynamic characteristics than conventional ones, a plate spring is applied to the optical pickup actuator and it is optimized with topology and parameter optimization to obtain the concept and the detail design, respectively.

  • Displacement, contact pressure and moment which are developed in rigid beam on the Winkler foundation and 2 parameter Winkler foundation were derived. It can be seen that moment distribution along with rigid beam on the Winkler foundation are regardless of spring constant and the moments calculated from assuming linear spring constant were greater than those from assuming constant spring constant. Simple calculation revealed that the maximum moment developed in the rigid beam on the 2 parameter Winkler foundation was larger than that developed in the rigid beam on the Winkler foundation.

  • This paper deals with the free vibrations of immersed columns with soft base. The support condition of the column is represented by using a translational spring and a rotational spring. The eccentricity and rotatory inertia of the concentrated mass at the top are taken into account. In the governing equation for the free vibration of column, the density of immersed part was modified to account for the added fluid mass. The governing differential equations are solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. Numerical results are presented to show the effects on the natural frequencies of non-dimensional system parameters: the mass density ratio of fluid to column, the ratio of fluid depth to span length, the ratio of tip mass to total column mass, the dimensionless mass moment of inertia, the eccentricity, the translation spring parameter, and the rotational spring parameter.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the free vibration characteristics of tapered beams with translational and rotational springs and tip masses at the ends. The beam model is based on the classical Bernoulli-Euler beam theory. The governing differential equation for the free vibrations of linearly tapered beams is solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. Numerical results are compared with existing solutions by other methods for cases in which they are available. The lowest three natural frequencies are calculated over a wide range of non-dimensional system parameters: the translational spring parameter, the rotational spring parameter, the mass ratio and the dimensionless mass moment of inertia.

  • An asymptotic solution for snap-through buckling of single-layer squarely-reticulated shallow spherical shells continuously supported on springs is developed in this paper. Based on the fundamental governing equations and boundary conditions, a nondimensional analytical expression associated with the external load, stiffness of spring and central transverse displacement (deflection) is derived with the aid of asymptotic iteration method. The effects of stiffness of spring and characteristic geometrical parameter on buckling of the structures are given by the analyses of numerical examples. In a special case, for reticulated circular plates, the influence of stiffness of spring on the characteristic relation between load and deflection is also demonstrated.

  • The axle spring is used in primary suspension component of railway vehicles. The most important factor of axle spring is to have adequate spring constant for comfortable feeling of ride. The non-linear properties of rubber which were important parameter to evaluate of rubber components, were determined by the characteristic test. The finite element analysis of the axle spring are executed to predict the behavior of deformation and stiffness by using commercial FEA code.

  • Recently, a new foundation model called "Dynamic foundation model" was proposed for the dynamic analysis of structures on the foundation. This model includes a linear elastic spring, shear layer, viscous damping and the special effects of mass density parameter of foundation during vibration. However, the relationship of foundation property parameters with the experimental parameter of the influence of foundation mass also has not been established in previous research. Hence, the purpose of the paper presents a simple experimental model in order to establish relationships between foundation properties such as stiffness, depth of foundation and experimental parameter of the influence of foundation mass. The simple experimental model is described by a steel plate connected with solid rubber layer as a single degree of freedom system including an elastic spring connected with lumped mass. Based on natural circular frequencies of the experimental models determined from FFT analysis plots of the time history of acceleration data, the experimental parameter of the influence of foundation mass is obtained and the above relationships are also discussed.
