The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences of the kinematical and the kinetical factors that calculated from preflight to preflight of salto forward straight 3/2 turn motion between skillers and less-skillers. four S-VHS video cameras operating at 60Hz were used to record the performances. Five elite male gymnasts were participated in this study as subjects. Three-dimensional coordinates of 21 body landmarks during each trial were collected using a Direct Linear Transformation method. The raw 3-D coordinates of the 21 body landmarks were smoothed using a second order lowpass, recursive Butterworth digital filter and a cutoff frequency of 10Hz. Load cells attached on the beneath of a board were used to attain the kinetic variables. It was found that the more angular momentum in the longitudinal axis, the less vertical velocity and these angular momentum effected the height of peak in the preflight. Also, it was revealed that the larger angular momentum in the medio-lateral axis was rather than it in the longitudinal axis to increase vertical height and rotation force of the body. For the reaction force of springboard, the vertical and the horizontal reaction force were 16.52BW and 3.45BW, respectively. It was found that the higher value of the vertical reaction force induced the faster vertical velocity and the higher an ar momentum. of the whole body center of gravity.

Recently, flexible cages have been introduced in an attempt to absorb and reduce the abnormal load transfer along the anterior parts of the spine. They are designed to be used with the pedicle screw systems to allow some mobility at the index level while containing ROM at the adjacent level. In this study, a finite element (FE) study was performed to assess biomechanical efficacies of the flexible cage when combined with pedicle screws with flexible rods. The post-operated models were constructed by modifying the L4-5 of a previously-validated 3-D FE model of the intact lumbar spine (L2-S1): (1) Type 1, flexible cage only; (2) Type 2, pedicle screws with flexible rods; (3) Type 3, interbody fusion cage plus pedicle screws with rigid rods; (4) Type 4, interbody fusion cage plus Type 2; (5) Type 5, Type 1 plus Type 2. Flexion/extension of 10 Nm with a compressive follower load of 400N was applied. As compared to the Type 3 (62~65%) and Type 4 (59~62%), Type 5 (53~55%) was able to limit the motion at the operated level effectively, despite moderate reduction at the adjacent level. It was also able to shift the load back to the anterior portions of the spine thus relieving excessively high posterior load transfer and to reduce stress on the endplate by absorbing the load with its flexible shape design features. The likelihood of component failure of flexble cage remained less than 30% regardless of loading conditions when combined with pedicle screws with flexible rods. Our study demonstrated that flexible cages when combined with posterior dynamic system may help reduce subsidence of cage and degeneration process at the adjacent levels while effectively providing stability at the operated level.

This paper presents design and performance evaluation of electro-rheological(ER) shock absorber for electronic control suspension(ECS). In order to achieve this goal, a cylindrical ER shock absorber that satisfies design specifications for a mid-sized commercial passenger vehicle is designed and manufactured to construct ER suspension system for ECS. After experimentally evaluating dynamic characteristics of the manufactured ER shock absorber, the quarter-vehicle ER suspension system consisting of sprung mass, spring, tire and the ER shock absorber is constructed in order to investigate the ride comfort and driving stability. After deriving the equations of the motion for the proposed quarter-vehicle ER suspension system, the skyhook controller is implemented for the realization of quarter-vehicle ER suspension system. In order to present control performance of ER shock absorber for ECS, ride comfort and driving stability characteristics such as vertical acceleration and tire deflection are experimentally evaluated under various road conditions and presented in both time and frequency domain.

This paper presents ride comfort characteristics of a quarter-vehicle magneto-rheological(MR) suspension system with respect to different tire pressure. As a first step, controllable MR damper is designed and modeled based on both the optimized damping force levels and mechanical dimensions required for a commercial full-size passenger vehicle. Then, a quarter-vehicle suspension system consisting of sprung mass, spring, tire and the MR damper is constructed. After deriving the equations of the motion for the proposed quarter-vehicle MR suspension system, vertical tire stiffness with respect to different tire pressure is experimentally identified. The skyhook controller is then implemented for the realization of the quarter-vehicle MR suspension system. Finally, the ride comfort analysis with respect to different tire pressure is undertaken in time domain. In addition, a comparative result between controlled and uncontrolled is provided by presenting vertical RMS displacement.

This paper presents a design for the novel suspension mechanism of a two-wheeled mobile robot having two casters which is used for indoor environment. Although the indoor environment is less rough than the outdoor one, the fixed caster mechanism has some problems such as causing the robot to be immovable because robot's driving wheels do not have contact with the ground. Therefore, we tried installing a spring-damper suspension mechanism to keep driving capability and to remove pitching phenomenon. However, this suspension mechanism also has the problem, which the robot body inclined by disturbances does not return to the initial position. To deal with above problems and to accomplish desired performances, we designed the Multilayered Suspension Mechanism, which has springs and dampers working partially according to the inclined angle and angular velocity of robot body concerned with pitching. To analyze design, the equations of motion describing their dynamics were developed. Using the equations, simulation results show the improved performance. We confirm the usefulness of the Multilayered Suspension Mechanism by construction and test of a actual prototype.
Herein, we present numerical simulation based model to study the use of a 'Tuned Mass Damper (TMD)' - particularly spring mass systems - to control the displacements at the deck level under seismic and ice loads for an offshore jacket structure. Jacket is a fixed structure and seismic loads can cause it to vibrate in the horizontal directions. These motions can disintegrate the structure and lead to potential failures causing extensive damage including environmental hazards and risking the lives of workers on the jacket. Hence, it is important to control the motion of jacket because of earthquake and ice loads. We analyze an offshore jacket platform with a tuned mass damper under the earthquake and ice loads and explore different locations to place the TMD. Through, selected parametric variations a suitable location for the placement of TMD for the jacket structure is arrived and this implies the design applicability of the present research. The ANSYS*TM mechanical APDL software has been used for the numerical modeling and analysis of the jacket structure. The dynamic response is obtained under dynamic seismic and ice loadings, and the model is attached with a TMD. Parameters of the TMD are studied based on the 'Principle of Absorption (PoA)' to reduce the displacement of the deck level in the jacket structure. Finally, in our results, the proper mass ratio and damping ratios are obtained for various earthquake and ice loads.
This study aims to estimate crack location and crack length in damaged beam structures using transfer matrix formulations, which are based on analytical solutions of governing equations of motion. A single variable shear deformation theory (SVSDT) that considers parabolic shear stress distribution along beam cross-section is used, as well as, Timoshenko beam theory (TBT). The cracks are modelled using massless rotational springs that divide beams into segments. In the forward problem, natural frequencies of intact and cracked beam models are calculated for different crack length and location combinations. In the inverse approach, which is the main concern of this paper, the natural frequency values obtained from experimental studies, finite element simulations and analytical solutions are used for crack identification via plots of rotational spring flexibilities against crack location. The estimated crack length and crack location values are tabulated with actual data. Three different beam models that have free-free, fixed-free and simple-simple boundary conditions are considered in the numerical analyses.

If hydraulic pump controlled by mechanical type regulator has more than one control function, the construction of regulator will be very complicated and control performance falls drastically. It is difficult to have more than one control function for hydraulic pump controlled by electronic type hydraulic valve due to the inconsistency of controllers. This paper proposes a multi-function control technique which controls continuously flow, pressure and power by using EPPR(Electronic Proportional Pressure Reducing) valve in swash plate type axial piston pump. Nonlinear mathematical model is developed from the continuity equation for the pressurized control volume and the torque balance for the swash plate motion. To simplify the model we make the linear state equation by differentiating the nonlinear model. A reaction spring is installed in servo cylinder to secure the stability of the control system. We analyze the stability and disturbance by using the state variable model. Finally, we review the control performances of flow, pressure and power by tests using PID controller.
A theoretical and experimental study is presented for the force holding control of a miniature robotic ringer which is driven by a pair of piezoelectric unimorph cells. In the theoretical analysis, one finger is modeled as a flexible cantilever with a tactile force sensor at the tip and the mate of the finger is a solid beam supposed with sufficient stiffness. Further, the force sensor is modeled by a one-degree-of-freedom, mass-spring system and the output of sensor is then described by the sensor stiffness multiplied by the relative displacement. The problem investigated in this paper is that two typical holding tasks of the human finger are picked up and applied to the robotic finger. One is the work holding a stationary object with a prescribed, time-varying force and the other one is to keep the contacted force constant even if the object is in motion. The simple PID feedback control scheme is used to control the minute gripping force of order 0.01 Newton. It is shown both experimentally and theoretically that the artificial finger with the piezoelectric actuator works well in the minute force holding of the tiny object.
In this paper, a simplified model is studied to predict analytically the vibration from the helical gear system due to an axial excitation of helical gears. The simplified model describes gear, shaft, bearing, and housing. In order to obtain the axial force of helical gears, the mesh stiffness is calculated in the load deflection relation. The axial force is obtained from the solution of the equation of motion, using the mesh stiffness. It is used as a longitudinal excitation of the shaft, which in turn drives the gear housing through the bearing. In this study, the shaft is modeled as a rod, while the bearing is modeled as a parallel spring and damper only supporting longitudinal forces. The gear housing is modeled as a clamped circular plate with viscous damping. For the modeling of this system, transfer matrices for the rod and bearing are used, using a spectral method with four pole parameters. The model is validated by finite element analysis. Using the model, parameter studies are carried out. As a result, the linearized dynamic shaft force due to the gear excitation in the frequency domain was proposed. Out-of-plan displacement from the forced vibrating circular plate and the renewed mode normalization constant of the circular plate were also proposed. In order to control the axial vibration of the helical gear system, the plate was more important than the shaft and the bearing. Finally, the effect of the dominant design parameters for the gear system can be investigated by this model.
