  • This paper investigates the control performance of the proposed hybrid mount system for vibration isolation table. The hybrid mount system consists of an air spring as a passive device and a PZT stack actuator as an active device in series. The feasibility of the PZT stack actuator as an active actuator was examined through the simple experiments. After that, a series of numerical simulations were carried out to evaluate the control performance of the proposed hybrid mount system. The equations of motion of the table with a set of hybrid mount systems consisting of four devices are derived. The air spring is considered as a 1 spring and 1 dashpot elements, and PID control algorithm is adopted to estimate the control force. The results of the numerical simulations presents that the proposed hybrid mount system could be the promising control system for vibration isolation table.

  • Because of complexity, the literature regarding the free vibration analysis of a Timoshenko beam carrying "multiple" spring-mass systems is rare, particular that regarding the "exact" solutions. As to the "exact" solutions by further considering the joint terms of shear deformation and rotary inertia in the differential equation of motion of a Timoshenko beam carrying multiple concentrated attachments, the information concerned is not found yet. This is the reason why this paper aims at studying the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a uniform Timoshenko beam carrying multiple intermediate spring-mass systems using an exact as well as a numerical assembly method. Since the shear deformation and rotary inertia terms are dependent on the slenderness ratio of the beam, the shear coefficient of the cross-section, the total number of attachments and the support conditions of the beam, the individual and/or combined effects of these factors on the result are investigated in details. Numerical results reveal that the effect of the shear deformation and rotary inertia joint terms on the lowest five natural frequencies of the combined vibrating system is somehow complicated.

  • Many vibrating mechanical systems from the real life are modeled as combined dynamical systems consisting of beams to which spring-mass secondary systems are attached. In most of the publications on this topic, masses of the helical springs are neglected. In a paper (Cha et al. 2008) published recently, the eigencharacteristics of an arbitrary supported Bernoulli-Euler beam with multiple in-span helical spring-mass systems were determined via the solution of the established eigenvalue problem, where the springs were modeled as axially vibrating rods. In the present article, the authors used the assumed modes method in the usual sense and obtained the equations of motion from Lagrange Equations and arrived at a generalized eigenvalue problem after applying a Galerkin procedure. The aim of the present paper is simply to show that one can arrive at the corresponding generalized eigenvalue problem by following a quite different way, namely, by using the so-called "characteristic force" method. Further, parametric investigations are carried out for two representative types of supporting conditions of the bending beam.

  • Current and sea level were observed in spring 1999 by a bottom mounted ADCP and tide gauge in the central part of the South Sea of Korea. With respect to the front, the distribution of isotherms is prograde in the offshore region whereas that of isohalines is retrograde, especially in the coastal area. The combined effect results in shoaling of isopycnals at the front. This distribution corresponds to a westward coastal flow on the northern side of the front and the eastward Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) to the south, determined by vessel-mounted ADCP observations. The low-frequency current shows either alternating clockwise-counterclockwise rotation or else persistent eastward motion depending on the frontal motion. Fluctuations of wind, sea level and current are coherent at period of 3-4 days and show some characteristics of Ekman-like dynamics.

  • Inelastic model of Second Jindo Bridge is investigated to perform nonlinear dynamic analyses with various earthquake ground motions. The modal analysis is performed to obtain dynamic characteristics of the bridge and verify the model. It proves that the model has an appropriate dynamic characteristic and its natural frequency is relatively low. Four ground motions are chosen for time history dynamic analyses; El Centro, Kobe, Taft, and Mexico earthquake. Each ground motion multiplied by specified factors to investigate damages of the structure. The analyses prove that responses of the bridge depend on the duration time and the frequency characteristics of ground motion, not only peak acceleration. Static push-over analysis of steel pylon shows that the dynamic analysis over-estimates the seismic behavior of steel pylon definitely. Nonlinear spring hinge model is suggest to improve the shortage of the inelastic model could not deliberate local buckling damage. According to the time history analysis of nonlinear spring hinge model, it is proved that the inelastic beam element analysis overestimate the seismic capacity of steel pylon unquestionably with a large amount of errors.

  • In the present study, unsteady flow simulations of a variable geometry nozzle were conducted using a two-dimensional flow solver based on hybrid unstructured meshes. The variable geometry nozzle is used to achieve efficient performances of aircraft engines at various operating conditions. To describe the motion of the variable geometry nozzle, an algebraic method based on the basis decomposition of normal edge vector was used for the deformation of viscous elements. A ball-vertex spring analogy was used for inviscid elements. The aerodynamic data were obtained for a range of nozzle pressure ratios, and the validations were made by comparing the present results with available experimental data. The unsteady nozzle flows were simulated with an oscillating diverging section and a converging-diverging section. It was found that the nozzle performances are influenced by the nozzle exit flow characteristics, mass flow rate, as well as unsteady effects. These unsteady effects are shown to behave differently depending on the frequency of the nozzle motion.

  • In this paper a simple mathematical model is presented for estimating the natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes of a tall building with outrigger-belt truss system. For this purposes an equivalent continuum system is analyzed in which a tall building structure is replaced by an idealized cantilever continuum beam representing the structural characteristics. The equivalent system is comprised of a cantilever shear beam in parallel to a cantilever flexural beam that is constrained by a rotational spring at outrigger-belt truss location. The mathematical modeling and the derivation of the equation of motion are given for the cantilevers with identically paralleled and rotational spring. The equation of motion and the associated boundary conditions are analytically obtained by using Hamilton's variational principle. After obtaining non-trivial solution of the eigensystem, the resulting is used to determine the natural frequencies and associated mode shapes of free vibration analysis. A numerical example for a 40 story tall building has been solved with proposed method and finite element method. The results of the proposed mathematical model have good adaptation with those obtained from finite element analysis. Proposed model is practically suitable for quick evaluations during the preliminary design stages.

  • An experimental study of the effect of mooring systems on the dynamics of a SPAR buoy-type floating offshore wind turbine is presented. The effects of the Center of Gravity (COG), mooring line spring constant, and fairlead location on the turbine's motion in response to regular waves are investigated. Experimental results show that for a typical mooring system of a SPAR buoy-type Floating Offshore Wind Turbine (FOWT), the effect of mooring systems on the dynamics of the turbine can be considered negligible. However, the pitch decreases notably as the COG increases. The COG and spring constant of the mooring line have a negligible effect on the fairlead displacement. Numerical simulation and sensitivity analysis show that the wind turbine motion and its sensitivity to changes in the mooring system and COG are very large near resonant frequencies. The test results can be used to validate numerical simulation tools for FOWTs.

  • The optimal design parameters of a dynamic absorber (DA) in a machine body (that is considered as a rigid body) are discussed in this paper. The bounce and rotation motions of the rigid body have been controlled passively by a DA, which consists of a mass and a spring. The rigid body is subjected to a harmonically excited force and supported by linear springs at both ends. To define the motion of a rigid body with a DA, the equation of motion was expressed in the third-order matrix form. To define the optimal design conditions of a DA, the reduction of dynamic characteristics, represented by the amplitudes of bounce and rotation, and the transmitted powers, were evaluated and discussed. The level of reduction was found to be highly dependent on the location and spring stiffness of the DA.
