Experimental Study of Chemical Effects on Head Loss across Containment Sump Strainer under Post-LOCA Environment (LOCA이후 원자로건물집수조 여과기의 수두손실에 대한 화학적 영향의 실험연구)

  • An integral head loss test in a test apparatus was conducted to simulate chemical effects on a head loss across a strainer in a pressurized water reactor (PWR) containment water pool after a loss of coolant accident (LOCA). The test was conducted during 30 days in the condition of a short spray, a long spray, and no materials with chemical effects. The result exhibited that the head loss was affected on amounts of the exposed materials according to spray conditions. XRD analysis of the collected precipitates showed that the precipitates were phosphate compounds. Comparison of the head loss with dissolved species concentration showed that high increase rate of the head loss resulted from the corrosion of aluminum and zinc but slow increase rate of the head loss resulted from the precipitates induced by Si, Mg, and Ca from leaching reaction at NUKON and concrete after passivation of metal specimens.

  • There is a method for offering continuous information by AF track circuits. Magnetic fields are formed by current through rails in the AF track circuit systems. So, the continuous information is received by the magnetic fields on a on-board antenna. Coating materials of spray on rails are researched to decrease defects such as head check, shelling, corrugation, squats and so on in Germany. Currently, a coating method of rail construction is proposed by using the ceramics in Korea. When deciding physical characteristic of the coating material of spray, researches are required about variation of flux density and resistivity by using the coating material of spray. In case that the flux density is much lower than existing value, the information for train control is not transmitted to the on-board antenna. In this paper, inductance on rails is calculated and a model is presented about variation of the magnetic field intensity and resistivity in the AF track circuit. Standard permeability of the coating material of spray is proposed. Also, standard resistivity of the coating material of spray is presented by analyzing short current.

Critical Influence of Rivet Head Height on Corrosion Performance of CFRP/Aluminum Self-Piercing Riveted Joints

  • This study investigates how rivet head height affects the corrosion performance of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) to aluminum alloy self-piercing riveted joints. Specimens with two different head heights were prepared. A rivet head protruding out of the top CFRP laminate forms the proud head height while a rivet head penetrating into the top CFRP generates the flush head height. The salt spray test evaluated corrosion performance. The flush head joints suffered from severe corrosion on the rivet head. Thus, the tensile shear load of flush head joints was substantially reduced. Electrochemical corrosion tests investigated the corrosion mechanisms. The deeper indentation of the flush head height damaged the CFRP around the rivet head. The exposure of damaged fibers from the matrix increased the cathodic potential of local CFRP. The increased potential of damaged CFRP accelerated the galvanic corrosion of the rivet head. After the rivet head coating material corroded, a strong galvanic couple was formed between the rivet head base metal (boron steel) and the damaged CFRP, further accelerating the flush rivet head corrosion. The results of this study suggest that rivet head flushness should be avoided to enhance the corrosion performance of CFRP to aluminum alloy self-piercing riveted joints.

An Experimental Study on the Effects of the Shape of a Drencher Head on the Characteristics of a Water Curtain (드렌처 헤드의 형상에 따른 수막특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The effects of the shape of a drencher head on the flow characteristics and radiation attenuation of a water curtain, in order to prevent a fire spread, were experimentally studied. The distance (h) between the orifice exit and deflector and the diameter of deflector (D) were varied as the shape factors of the head, with the same orifice diameter (d). It was found that an increase in h leads to an increase in the water flow rate and spray angle. However, the change in the spray angle decreases with increasing D. Increasing D brings about a subtle increase in the water flow rate and a significant decrease in the spray angle. A larger value of D makes it possible to produce a flatter pattern of the water curtain, but reduces the uniformity of the droplets inside the spray angle. The mean droplet diameter decreases significantly as the operating pressure increases. However, the variation in the shape of the drencher head does not significantly affect the change in the mean diameter at the same operating pressure. Finally, it was found that the radiation attenuation afforded by the water curtain at the same operating pressure was affected by water flow rate and droplet uniformity, which were determined by h and D, respectively.

  • According as the industry was developed, the pollution of the environment and atmosphere rose up to the surface. So, the focus is now concentrated on the engines of affinity for nature. And the investigators make more effort to the improvement in the performance of engines, depending to the prices of oil and the anxiety about the exhaustion of the fossil fuel go up. So the GDI engines head up for these necessities. In this experimental study, the spray flow characteristics for a commercial injector equipped in the present GDI engine were investigated, which had a strong influence on the engine performance and emissions. The experiment was performed at the injection pressures of 1, 3, 5 and 7MPa under the atmospheric condition. A PDPA system was used to specify the flow characteristics of the spray. Also, the global spray behavior classified into three regions as leading, main spray and vortex cloud region, was analyzed by using a visualization system. And the regions were compared with each other.

  • The effect of the shape of the side wall on vaporization and fuel mixture were investigated for the impinging spray of a direct injection(DI) gasoline engine under a variety of conditions using the LIEF technique. The characteristics of the impinging spray were investigated under various configurations of piston cavities. To simulate the effect of piston cavity configurations and injection timing in an actual DI gasoline engine, the parameters were horizontal distance from the spray axis to side wall and vertical distance from nozzle tip to impingement plate. Prior to investigating the side wall effect, experiments on free and impinging sprays for flat plates were conducted and these results were compared with those of the side wall impinging spray. For each condition, the impingement plate was located at three different vertical distances(Z=46.7, 58.4, and 70 mm) below the injector tip and the rectangular side wall was installed at three different radial distances(R=15, 20, and 25 mm) from the spray axis. Radial propagation velocity from spray axis along impinging plate became higher with increasing ambient temperature. When the ambient pressure was increased, propagation speed reduced. High ambient pressures tended to prevent the impinging spray from the propagating radially and kept the fuel concentration higher near the spray axis. Regardless of ambient pressure and temperature fully developed vortices were generated near the side wall with nearly identical distributions, however there were discrepancies in the early development process. A relationship between the impingement distance(Z) and the distance from the side wall to the spray axis(R) was demonstrated in this study when R=20 and 25 mm and Z=46.7 and 58.4 mm. Fuel recirculation was achieved by adequate side wall distance. Fuel mixture stratification, an adequate piston cavity with a shorter impingement distance from the injector tip to the piston head should be required in the central direct injection system.

  • This study was conducted to develop a test facility that simulates the combustion instability that occurs in a real-scale liquid rocket combustor. A separate engine head with 3 injectors arranged in a row was designed/manufactured and verified through preliminary tests. The flow rate and spray pattern of the head were confirmed by the cold flow test. Next, propellant spray test and combustion test were carried out. A preliminary combustion test was carried out at 10 bar and the combustion chamber pressure was measured to be significantly lower than the target pressure. This is because it was a low pressure test, and it is expected to be resolved in the high pressure test in the future.

Response of Barley Genotypes to Fusarium Head Blight under Natural Infection and Artificial Inoculation Conditions

  • Forty-eight spring barley genotypes were evaluated for deoxynivalenol (DON) concentration under natural infection across 5 years at Harrington, Prince Edward Island. These genotypes were also evaluated for Fusarium head blight (FHB) severity and DON concentration under field nurseries with artificial inoculation of Fusarium graminearum by the grain spawn method across 2 years at Ottawa, Ontario, and one year at Hangzhou, China. Additionally, these genotypes were also evaluated for FHB severity under greenhouse conditions with artificial inoculation of F. graminearum by conidial suspension spray method across 3 years at Ottawa, Ontario. The objective of the study was to investigate if reactions of barley genotypes to artificial FHB inoculation correlate with reactions to natural FHB infection. DON concentration under natural infection was positively correlated with DON concentration (r = 0.47, P < 0.01) and FHB incidence (r = 0.56, P < 0.01) in the artificially inoculated nursery with grain spawn method. Therefore, the grain spawn method can be used to effectively screen for low DON. FHB severity, generated from greenhouse spray, however, was not correlated with DON concentration (r = 0.12, P > 0.05) under natural infection and it was not correlated with DON concentration (r = -0.23, P > 0.05) and FHB incidence (r = 0.19, P > 0.05) in the artificially inoculated nursery with grain spawn method. FHB severity, DON concentration, and yield were affected by year, genotype, and the genotype × year interaction. The effectiveness of greenhouse spray inoculation for indirect selection for low DON concentration requires further studies. Nine of the 48 genotypes were found to contain low DON under natural infection. Island barley had low DON and also had high yield.

  • A test apparatus has been fabricated to simulate chemical effect on head loss through a strainer in a pressurized water reactor (PWR) containment water pool after a loss of coolant accident (LOCA). Tests were conducted under condition of same ratio of strainer surface area to water volume between the test appratus and the containment sump. A series of tests have been performed to investigate the effects of spray, existence of calcium-silicate with tri-sodium phosphate (TSP), and composition of materials. The results showed that head loss across the chemical bed with even a small amount of calcium-silicate insulation instantaneously increased as soon as TSP was added to the test solution. Also, the head loss across the test screen is strongly affected by spray duration and is increased rapidly at the early stage, because of high dissolution and precipitation of aluminum and zinc. After passivation of aluminum and zinc by corrosion, the head loss increase is much slowed down and is mainly induced by materials such as calcium, silicon, and magnesium leached from NUKONTM and concrete. Furthermore, it is newly found that the spay buffer agent, tri-sodium phosphate, to form protective coating on the aluminum surface and reduce aluminum leaching is not effective for a large amount of aluminum and a long spray.

A study on the structure of a diesel spray and the Improvement of the Injection System by the Exciplex Method (EXCIPLEX법에 의한 디젤분무의 구조와 분사계 개선에 관한 연구)

  • The goals of this study are to apply exciplex method to the visualization of the fuel spray of a diesel engine and to investigate the liquid phase of fuel spray that injected at the various tips of a fuel injector. This study provides the informations for the improvement of the diesel injection system and the structures of diesel spry with the boiling of fuel droplets in combustion chamber by the exciplex method. Hexame was used as fuel for approximation to injection condition of the engine. And naphthalene and TMDP were added to the fuel for the visualization by exciplex method. Experimental injectors were 4hole, 8hole, and 1hole impinging injectors. In the injection condition of actual engine the exciplex was sufficient to catch the liquid phase signal. The spray penetration of impinging injector was small than that of actual 4 and 8hole injector but atomization was better. The upper bound of impinging injector was determined by the geometry of a cylinder head and the lower bound was determined by spray angle. On impinging injector the atomization was better at the edge of disk than at center of disk and also the mixing with environmental gas was better.
