  • Two new marine sponges in family Halichondriidae, Halichondria ulleungensis n. sp. and H. hongdoenesis n. sp. are collected from Ulleungdo Island and Hongdo Island, Korea by SCUBA diving during 2003-2004. H. ulleungensis n. sp. is similar to H. corrugata Diaz, Pomponi and van Soest, 1993 in the type of spicule, but it is different in growth form and choanosomal skeleton. The growth form is encrusting, with numerous erected cylindrical tube, comparing with massive-lobate of H. corrugata. The choanosomal skeleton is confused with loosely arranged oxea tract, comparing with densely tracts with many spicules of H. corrugata. H. hongdoenesis n. sp. is similar to H. surrubicunda Hoshino, 1981 in type of spicule and growth form, but this species has two kinds (thick and thin) of oxea.

  • The secondary metabolites from Taiwanese marine soft corals and sponges have attracted much attention because they possess considerable potential biological activities. To explore the origin of bioactivity, many cytotoxic natural products were isolated and characterized in the past few years. For examples, The lipophilic extracts from marine sponges Petrosia elastica and Ircinia formosana were found active against several human tumor cells. The investigation of the gorgonian Junceela has also resulted in the discovery of a series of new juncenolides. Bioassay-directed fractionation of Clavularia viridis yielded seven new prostanoids. These compounds have been tested and evaluated as potential antitumor agents. The soft corals of the genus Cespitularia produced novel secondary metabolites with diverse chemical structures and interesting biological activities. Four new norditerpenoids, designated cespitulactones and cespihypotins were isolated from Cespitularia hypotentaculata. Cespitulactones are novel structures having a bond cleavage between C-10 and C-11. In addition, three novel diterpenes were isolated from C. taeniata and designated cespitulactams A, B and C having a phenylethyl amino side chain.

  • Bioactivity-guided fractionation of MeOH extract of an association of two sponges, Jaspis sp. and Poecillastra sp. resulted in isolation of four apocarotenoids (1 - 4). Their structures were determined on the basis of MS and NMR spectroscopic analyses and by direct comparison with those of reported. This is the first report on isolation of these compounds from any sponge. Isolated metabolites were evaluated for cytotoxicity against a small panel of solid human tumor cell lines.

  • Three new genera and species of siphonostomatoid copepods are described as associates of sponges from shallow water of Samar Island in the Philippines: Samarus filipes n. gen., n. sp., Paurocheres dentatus n. gen., n. sp., and Platymyzon umbonatum n. gen., n. sp. A new family Samarusidae is proposed to accommodate Samarus n. gen. which has rudimentary legs 1-5 represented only by filiform setae. Paurocheres n. gen. is characterized by 2-segmented endopod of leg 4 and reduced setation of legs, and Platymyzon n. gen. by missing of mandibular gnathobase.

  • Six new species of siphonostomatoid copepods are described from sponges collected in the Philippines and Vietnam. Two new genera of Asterocheridae, Andapontius and Holobinus, are proposed. The new species are Andapontius granulatus n. gen. n. sp., Holobinus angustus n. gen. n. sp. and Dermatomyzon boxshalli n. sp. in the family Asterocheridae and Entomopsyllus brevicaudatus n. sp., Paralepeopsyllus leei n. sp. and P. dambayensis n. sp. in the family Entomolepididae. Doropontius denticornis Thompson and Scott, 1903, is redescribed for the first time since its original record.
