  • A taxonomic study on marine sponges was conducted with materials collected from Gageodo Island, Korea, from August 1999 to July 2001 by SCUBA diving. Among them, Phorbas gukhulensis n. sp. is new to science. Phorbas gukhulensis n. sp. is similar to P. fitictius Pulitzer-Finali from which it differs in spicule size and growth form.

  • Sarcotragins C(1) and D(2), two novel compounds, have been isolated from the sponge Sarcotragus sp. collected from Jaeju Island, Korea. The structures of these compounds have been determined to be linear sesterterpene alkaloids on the basis of combined 1D and 2D NMR experiments. The stereochemistry involved was established by comparison of the NMR data with those reported for a similar compound.

  • A new marine sponge Cinachyrella unjinensis n. sp. has been collected from Jejudo Island in 2009. This new species is similar to C. kuekenthali (Uliczka, 1929) in the shape and composition of the spicules except for style. However, it differs from the latter by size of anatriaenes, protriaenes and microxeas.

  • This study is to develop a Fe-based disc brake lining with sponge structure for rolling stock of 150km/h train and to concept design with 3 groove type for brake disc reducing hot hair-crack and certainly friction coefficient. The developing brake lining would be to presumption of saving 300 million won during one year

  • Peroxides in natural products have been recently received a considerable attention due to their various biological and pharmacological properties. Nearly 300 peroxides have been isolated and structually characterized from natural sources, mainly as constituents of Compositae and marine sponge, and occur randomly in about 10 other plant families. Among peroxides studied, sesquiterpene endoperoxide, quinghaosu, has been already clinically applied as a new antimalarial drug. Based on the peroxides reported, structural classification, natural distribution and biological and pharmacological activities are reviewed. Color reagent and spectroscopic identification of peroxide are also described.

  • A new species of the genus Smenospongia (Dictyoceratida, Thorectidae), S. coreana n. sp., is described from Gageodo Island, Korea. This new species is readily distinguished from the other species of Smenospongia by the un-lobated growth forms and un-crowded primary fibres. S. aurea and S. lamellata are no distinction between primary and secondary elements, but this species is easily distinguished from them. The matrix easily derived from the fibres. This species has five sesterterpenes, three scalaranetypes and two linear furanosesterterpenes, in chemical compounds.

  • A new sponge species of the genus Hymeniacidon (family Halichondriidae) from Munsum, Jeju Island, Korea is described. This species is similar to H. sinapium in spicule size, but the color, oscules, external surface and arrangement of the spicules are considerably different. This species is bright yellow in live, and retains multiple oscules and a plumose bundle of styles in the subectosomal region.
