  • This paper presents a finite element method to analyze the free vibration of a flexible HDD composed of the spinning disk-spindle system with fluid dynamic bearings(FDBs), the head-suspension-actuator with pivot bearings, and the base plate with complicated geometry. Experimental modal testing shows that the proposed method well predicts tue vibration characteristics of a HDD. This research also shows that even the vibration motion of the spinning disk corresponding to half-speed whirl and the pure disk mode are transferred to a head-suspension-actuator and base plate through the air bearing and the pivot bearing consecutively. The proposed method can be effectively extended to investigate the forced vibration of a HDD and to design a robust HDD against shock.

  • This paper presents a method to analyze the vibration of a flexible spinning disk-spindle system with FDBs, flexible base structure and an actuator in a HDD by using the FEM. Finite element equations of each component of a HDD spindle system from the spinning flexible disk to the flexible base plate are consistently derived by satisfying the geometric compatibility in the internal boundary between each component. A global matrix equation obtained by assembling the finite element equations of each substructure is transformed to a state-space matrix-vector equation, and both damped natural frequencies and modal damping ratios are calculated by using the restarted Arnoldi iteration method. The validity of the proposed method is verified by comparing the simulated natural frequencies, mode shapes with the experimental results.

  • In the three-axis control of satellites by using on-board actuators, gyros are usually used to measure the attitude angles and angular rates. The gyros are operated by electronic parts and mechanical actuators. The digital components of the electronic parts consist of largely FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) as one of the methods for VLSI(Very Large Scale Integrated) circuit design, while the mechanical parts provide output signal directly by mechanical actuation of a spinning rotor. In this research, a mixed mode of gyro is implemented in FGA. In addition to the hardware implementation, the simulation study was conducted by using the SABER for the mixed mode simulator. Results for the practical implementation of the satellite ACS (Attitude Control System) interfaced with the data processing are also presented to validate the FPGA implementation.

  • The attitude stability of a satellite in spin-stabilized injection mode which contains a liquid pool is investigated. The satellite model for investigation is a two-body system consisting of a the main body, which is symmetric and rigid, representing the spacecraft, and a spherical pendulum, representing the liquid pool. Assuming that both spacecraft and pendulum are in states of steady spin about the symmetry axis of the spacecraft, the coupled nonlinear equations of motion for the system are simplified. In this paper, by using the multiple scales method, the possible resonance conditions in terms of the system parameters are determined and the corresponding near-resonant solutions are derived.

  • A refined plate theory including the effects of transverse shearing is used to predict the free vibration frequencies, mode shapes and stress distributions in spinning laminated composite plates. In this theory, the displacements are expressed by trigonometric series representation through the thickness. In the series for the displacements only the first few terms are retained. The model is validated by comparing the results for isotropic plates with those available in the literature.

  • A new mathematical model to predict the beam pointing instability of a nonconservative two-body satellite system in spinning injection mode has been developed by using Newton-Euler and projection methods. Since the on-axis and null axis of the omni antenna with toroidal pattern beam form a right angle, wobbling of the antenna on-axis is measured by determining the Euler angles which represent the orientation of the satellite's spin axis. Because of the complexity of the system which is a time varying, nonstationary, nonlinear dynamical system, a numerical method is used for the analysis. Computer simulation results present the effects of the mass distribution and internal mass motion on the antenna beam pointing.

  • To improve mechanical properties of Cu-Al-Ni alloy by the grain refinement, Cu-Al-Ni SMA ribbons were fabricated by melt spinning apparatus. The variations of microstructure, mechanical properties and transformation characteristics with the condition of rapid solidification and annealing time-temperature were investigated in Cu-Al-Ni SMA ribbons. The ribbons fabricated by melt spinning obtained around 1.5nm in width and 50-60${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in thickness. With increasing wheel speed in order of 10m/s, 15m/s, 20m/s, 30m/s and 3m/s, the grain size was decreased in order of 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 6.25${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 5.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. $M_{s}$ and $A_{s}$ temperature were decreased with decreasing grain size. By X-ray diffraction test, ordered $\beta$$_1$ phase was observed in all the SMA ribbons and the volume friction of it was increased with increasing wheel speed. With increasing wheel speed, strain was increased from 4.2% to 5.8% and fracture mode has changed from mixture of intergranular and dimple fracture to mixture of fiber structure and dimple fracture. The grain size of ribbon heat-treated at $600^{\circ}C$ was increased with increasing time. In the heat-treated ribbons at 55$0^{\circ}C$, ${\gamma}$$_2$ phases were observed.d.d.

  • This paper deals with the vibration and stability of a circular cylindrical shaft, modeled as a tapered thin-walled composite beam and spinning with constant angular speed about its longitudinal axis, and subjected to an axial compressive force. Hamilton's principle and the assumed mode method are employed to derive the governing equations of motion. The resulting eigenvalue problem is analyzed, and the stability boundaries are presented for selected taper ratios and axial compressive force combinations. Taking into account the directionality property of fiber reinforced composite materials, it is shown that for a shaft featuring flapwise-chordwise-bending coupling, a dramatic enhancement of both the vibration and stability behavior can be reached. It is found that by the structural tailoring and tapering, bending natural frequencies, stiffness and stability region can be significantly increased over those of uniform shafts made of the same material. In addition, the particular case of a classical beam with internal damping effect is also included.
