  • In this study, TiO2-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite granules were prepared via spray drying technique. To investigate the effects of solid content and binder/powder ratio in the slurry on the granulation behavior of TiO2 powders, the feed compositions were designed to vary over a wide range. The morphology, actual densities, and average granule size and size distribution of the TiO2-PVA composite granules were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy technique, a gas pycnometer, and an image analyzing program (Image-J), respectively. The results indicate that solid content and the amount of PVA in the feedstock slurry are the dominant factors determining the granule morphology, size, and size distribution of TiO2-PVA composite. Moreover, it was observed that increasing the solid content and the amount of PVA in the slurry improved the granulation process and reduced the granule defects. For the preparation of spherical TiO2-PVA composite granules with the minimum amount of non-granulated powders, the optimized composition of the feedstock slurry was found to be 35 wt.% solid and 3 wt.% PVA.

  • 10mo1% Gd$_2$O$_3$ doped CeO$_2$ fine powders were synthesized by the oxalate coprecipitation method. The characteristics and sintering behavior of fine powders were investigated. The oxalate precipitates had the specific surface area of 150$m^2$/g, and appeared to be fine and spherical primary particles with a size of approximately 5.5nm. The decomposition of the precipitates occurred from a temperature around 30$0^{\circ}C$ and it was completed below 40$0^{\circ}C$, resulted in the formation of the oxide. The calcination temperature of the fine powders was suitable at 77$0^{\circ}C$. By introducing fine powders washed with alcohol and ball-milling process after calcination, the sintered body was possible to attain the value of 97% of the theoretical density at low temperature of 130$0^{\circ}C$

  • Phospho-olivine $LiFePO_4$ cathode materials were prepared by hydrothermal reaction at different temperatures. The structural performance of $LiFePO_4$ powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). $LiFePO_4$/Li batteries were characterized electrochemically by charge/discharge experiments. The XRD results demonstrate that $LiFePO_4$ powder has an orthorhombic olivine-type structure with a space group of Pnmb. Among the synthesized cathode materials, $LiFePO_4$synthesized at $170^{\circ}C$ and subsequently annealed at $500^{\circ}C$ shows the best electrochemical properties. It shows initial discharge capacity of $167\;mAh\;g^{-1}$ (98% of the theoretical capacity) close to the theoretical capacity of $LiFePO_4$ ($170\;mAh\;g^{-1}$) at 0.1 C rate, which is ascribed to the enhanced degree of crystallinity, better phase purity, more spherical and more finely dispersed nanoparticles, crystallization and activation of small amount impurity.

  • Silica powders with spherical shape and narrow size distribution were prepared by large-scale ultrasonic spray pyrolysis applying the droplet classification apparatus. On the other hand, silica powders prepared by large-scale ultrasonic spray pyrolysis without droplet classification apparatus had broad size distribution. Droplet classification apparatus used in this paper applied the principles of cyclone and dispersion plate with small holes. The droplets formed from the ultrasonic spray generator applying the droplet classification apparatus had narrow size distribution. The droplets with fine and large sizes were eliminated by droplet classification apparatus. The optimum flow rate of the carrier gas and diameter of the hole of the dispersion plate were studied to reduce the size distribution of the silica powders prepared by large-scale ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. The size distribution of the silica powders prepared by large-scale ultrasonic spray pyrolysis at the optimum preparation conditions was 0.76.

  • The physical properties of ceramic materials including oxides are greatly influenced by the material density. Therefore, various efforts have been made to increase the material density. One of the most popular strategies is to use sintering additives in sintering materials. The conventional sintering additive was a spherical powder having a three-dimensional structure. In this study, sintering additive with 2-dimensional (2D) layer structure was used to increase the sintering density of cerium oxide and its effect was confirmed. In this study, 1 nm-thick $TiO_x$ and $MnO_x$ nanosheets were used as sintering additives.

  • In this study, PAN-SZ (polyacrylonitrile scoria zeolite) beads were prepared by immobilizing Na-A zeolite (SZ-A) synthesized from Jeju volcanic rocks (scoria) on the polymer PAN. FT-IR and TGA analysis results confirmed that the SZ-A was immobilized in the PAN-SZ beads. SEM images showed that the PAN-SZ beads are a spherical shape with 2 mm diameter and exhibit a porous inner structure inside the bead. The most suitable mixing ratio of PAN to SZ-A as the adsorbent for removing Sr ions was PAN/SZ-A = 0.2 g/0.3 g. The adsorption kinetic data for Cu and Sr ions were fitted well with the pseudo-second-order model. The Cu and Sr ion uptakes followed a Langmuir isotherm model and the maximum adsorption capacities at $20^{\circ}C$ were 84.03 mg/g and 75.19 mg/g, respectively. The amount of Sr ion adsorbed by SZ-A on the PAN-SZ beads was about 160 mg/g, which was similar to that adsorbed by SZ-A powder. Thus, the PAN-SZ beads prepared in this study are considered to be effective adsorbents for removing metal ions in aqueous solutions.

  • The physical properties of the noble metal current-collector used for fuel cells are greatly influenced by the material porosity. Therefore, increasing the porosity of the material studies has attracted much attention. One of the most representative strategies is to use porosity additives in sintering materials. The conventional porosity additive had a threedimensional structure of a spherical powder. In this study, porosity additive with 2-dimensional (2D) nanosheet was used to decrease the sintering density of Ag current-collector and its effect was confirmed. As a 2D layered structure material, 1 nm-thick RuO2 nanosheets were used as porosity additives.

  • Ni-CNT nanocomposites were synthesized via the electrical explosion of wire (EEW) in acetone and deionized (DI) water liquid conditions with different CNT compositions. The change in the shape and properties of the Ni-CNT nanopowders were determined based on the type of fluids and CNT compositions. In every case, the Ni nanopowder had a spherical shape and the CNT powder had a tube shape. However, the Ni-CNT nanopowders obtained in DI water exhibited irregular shapes due to the oxidation of Ni. Phase analysis also revealed the existence of nickel oxide when using DI water, as well as some unknown peaks with acetone, which may form due to the metastable phase of Ni. Magnetic properties were investigated using a Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) for all cases. Nanopowders prepared in DI water conditions had better magnetic properties than those in acetone, as evidenced by the simultaneous formation of super paramagnetic NiO peaks and ferromagnetic Ni peaks. The DI water (Ni:CNT = 1:0.3) sample revealed better magnetic results than the DI water (Ni-CNT = 1:0.5) because it had less CNT contents.

  • The corrosion phenomena of the iron artifacts was studied by morphology observation and instrumental analysis(EDS, XRD, Raman) with various corrosion factors in oder to verify to confirm the danger of corrosion factors. Corrosion compounds were collected by depositing pure Fe powder(99%) into a HCl, $HNO_3$, $H_2SO_4$, and $H_2O$ solution which contained the corrosion factors. Stereoscopic-microscope observations were then conducted determine the colors and shapes of the collected corrosion compounds, and SEM-EDS analysis was conducted to confirm the corrosion factors and the growth of these compounds. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman analyses were conducted to examine the crystal structure and compositions of the created corrosion compounds. The results of the experiment revealed that corrosion speed was faster in an acidic environment and corrosion of HCl and $H_2SO_4$ was greater than that of $HNO_3$. The corrosion compounds of HCl grew into a needle or chestnut-like shape after being affected by Cl- ion, and XRD and Raman analyses detected goethite and lepidocrocite. The corrosion compounds of $H_2SO_4$ was affected by S ion and grew into a slender-needle-like or cylindrical shape, and the XRD and Raman analyses detected goethite and lepidocrocite. The corrosion compounds of $HNO_3$ grew into a spherical or plate-like shape after being affected by O ion and the XRD and Raman analyses detected magnetite and lepidocrocite. Although the corrosion compounds of $H_2O$ grew into a spherical or plate-like shape after being affected by O ion, most of them were observed to have had spherical shapes, and the XRD and Raman analyses failed to detect corrosion compounds in them. It was found in the study that corrosion characteristics and compounds are diversely displayed according to the corrosion factor.

  • The key quality attributes of the pressed powder, one of base makeup products, are skin-affinity and spreadability. In general, there was a limit to meet skin-affinity and spreadability simultaneously, which are opposite attributes each other. In this study, air jet mill process was tried to satisfy two main properties. Skin-affinity was improved by a wet coating of sericite with a mixture of lauroyl lysine (LL) and sodium cocoyl glutamate (SCG). The application of mono-dispersed polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and diphenyl dimethicone/vinyl diphenyl dimethicone/silsesquioxane crosspolymer (DDVDDSC) improved both qualities. Air jet mill process has been mainly applied in the pharmaceutical and food industries, and is a method used for processing powder materials in cosmetic field. In this study, we were able to complete makeup cosmetics with an optimum particle size $6.8{\mu}m$ by combining the air jet mill process at the manufacturing stage. It was confirmed that the Ti element was uniformly distributed throughout the cosmetics by EDS mapping, and that the corners of the tabular grains were rounded by SEM analysis. It is considered that this can provide an effect of improving the spreadability when the cosmetic is applied to the skin by using a makeup tool. LL with excellent skin compatibility and SCG derived from coconut with little skin irritation were wet coated to further enhance the adhesion of sericite. SEM images were analyzed to evaluate effect of the dispersion and uniformity of PMMA on spreadability. With the spherical shapes of similar size, it was found that the spreading effect was further increased when the distribution was homogeneously mono-dispersed. The dispersion and spreadability of PMMA were confirmed by measuring the kinetic friction and optimal content was determined. The silicone rubber powder, DDVDDSC, was confirmed by evaluating the hardness, spreading value, and drop test. Finally, it was found that the dispersion of PMMA and silicone rubber powder affected spreadability. Such makeup cosmetics have excellent stability in drop test while having appropriate hardness, and good stability over time. Taken together, it is concluded that air jet mill process can be utilized as a method to improve skin-affinity and spreadability of the pressed powder.
