  • This study mainly focused on the neutronics modeling of bubbles in bubbly flow in boiling water reactors. The bubble, ring and homogenous models were used for radial void fraction distribution. Effect of the bubble and ring models on the infinite multiplication factor and two-group flux distribution was investigated by comparing with the homogenous model. Square pitch unit cell geometry was used in the calculations. In the bubble model, spherical and non-spherical bubbles at random positions, sizes and shapes were produced by Monte Carlo method. The results show that there are significant differences among the proposed models from the viewpoint of physical interaction mechanism. For the fully-developed bubbly flow, $k_{inf}$ is overestimated in the ring model by about $720{\pm}6pcm$ with respect to homogeneous model whereas underestimated in the bubble model by about $-65{\pm}9pcm$ with a standard deviation of 15 pcm. In addition, the ring model shows that the coolant must be separated into regions to properly represent the radial void distribution. Deviations in flux distributions principally occur in certain regions, such as corners. As a result, the bubble model in modeling the void fraction can be used in nuclear engineering calculations.

  • To increase the efficiency of the hydraulic axial piston pumps, we have to know the various characteristics in the sliding parts of them. Especially, friction characteristics between the cylinder block and the valve plate in the hydraulic axial piston pumps plays an important role to high power density. In this paper, we tried to clarify friction characteristics between the cylinder block and the spherical valve plate in bent-axis-type axial piston pump by using of modeling experiment. The main results of this study are these; (1) Friction torque between the cylinder block and the spherical valve plate has a proportional relation to weight or rotational speed, and is strongly affected by temperature. (2) Friction torque strongly depends on force balance ratio. (3) In this experiment, lubrication condition between the cylinder block and the spherical valve plate is under hydrodynamic lubrication.

  • As demands on the precision bevel gears are increased in the related industry, the exact kinematical investigations of a pair of spherical involute bevel gears are required for the computer aided design. The exact angular velocity ratio based on the characteristics of the spherical involute tooth is derived and verified from the relationship between rotational angles. Elementary kinematics of the gearsets is investigated by applying the transformation of the coordinate systems. The tooth contact lines based on logarithmic tooth-wise curve are examines in three dimentional space. Contact ratio is formulated and simulated according to the system parameters such as shaft angles, pressure angle, and spiral angles. The condition of teeth interference is dervied and the critical numbers of gear teeth are calculated. The whole surface geometry of a spiral bevel gearsets are discretized and visualized by a computer graphic tool.

  • We investigated the substrate surface polishing by the spherical rigid abrasive under the compression using classical molecular dynamics modeling. We performed three-dimensional molecular dynamic simulations using the Morse potential functions for the various slide-to-roll ratios, from 0 to 1, and then, the compressive forces acting on the spherical rigid abrasive were calculated as functions of the time and the slide-to-roll ratio. The friction coefficients obtained from the classical molecular dynamics simulations were compared to those obtained from the experiments; and found that the molecular dynamic simulation results with the slide-to-roll ratio of 0 value were in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • The use of air-supported membrane has considerable attention in recent years. There are, however, a number of problems in the behavior of these structures that have not been fully investigated. For example, the problem of local loafing on such membranes has not been analyzed yet. The paper presents an analysis of internal and external potential energy of a spherical air-supported membrane with vertical longitudinal axis, subjected to local loadings. An internal pressure value of the applied load is established at which tile potential of these structures change positive. During such change the loading portion of the membrane comes into work beyond stable state. The mathematical method is used throughout the paper in obtaining solution. For the mathematical modeling, two assumption are used. One is the theta's elimination and the other is the infinite condition. The paper is illustrating the examples of spherical air membrane dome subjected to local load.

  • This paper presents a three dimensional modeling and simulations of operation and running of a wheel loader using the ADAMS program. A wheel loader consists of a bucket, a boom, a crank, a front frame, a rear frame, a bucket cylinder, two boom cylinders, two steering cylinders, nine spherical joints, six universal joints, five translation joints, three inline joints, a revolute and a fixed joint. Judging from the actual degrees of freedom of the wheel loader, proper kinematic joints are selected to exclude redundant constraints in the modeling. Through the running simulation over a bump with the three dimensional modeling, the joint reaction forces are calculated.

  • The double Fourier series (DFS) spectral dynamical core is evaluated for the two idealized test cases in comparison with the spherical harmonics (SPH) spectral dynamical core. A new approach in calculating the meridional expansion coefficients of DFS, which was recently developed to alleviate a computational error but only applied to the 2D spherical shallow water equation, is also tested. In the 3D deformational tracer transport test, the difference is not conspicuous between SPH and DFS simulations, with a slight outperformance of the new DFS approach in terms of undershooting problem. In the baroclinic wave development test, the DFS-simulated wave pattern is quantitatively similar to the SPH-simulated one at high resolutions, but with a substantially lower computational cost. The new DFS approach does not offer a salient advantage compared to the original DFS while computation cost slightly increases. This result suggests that the current DFS spectral method can be a practical and alternative dynamical core for high-resolution global modeling.

  • We have earlier developed a 40-channel SQUID system. An important figure of merit of a MEG system is the localization error, within which the underlying current source can be localized. With this system, we investigated the localization error in terms of the standard deviation of the coordinates of the ECDs and the systematic error due to inadequate modeling. To do this, we made localization of single current dipoles from tangential components of auditory evoked fields. Equivalent current dipoles (ECD) at N1m peak were estimated based on a locally fitted spherical conductor model. In addition, we made skull phantom and simulation measurements to investigate the contribution of various errors to the localization error. It was found that the background noise was the main source of the errors that could explain the observed standard deviation. Further, the amount of systematic error, when modeling the head with a spherical conductor, was much less than the standard deviation due to the background noise. We also demonstrated the performance of the system by measuring the evoked fields to grammatical violation in sentence comprehension.

  • To generate a complete 3D model from depth images of multiple RGB-D cameras, it is necessary to find 3D transformations between RGB-D cameras. This paper proposes a convenient view calibration technique using a spherical object. Conventional view calibration methods use either planar checkerboards or 3D objects with coded-pattern. In these conventional methods, detection and matching of pattern features and codes takes a significant time. In this paper, we propose a convenient view calibration method using both 3D depth and 2D texture images of a spherical object simultaneously. First, while moving the spherical object freely in the modeling space, depth and texture images of the object are acquired from all RGB-D camera simultaneously. Then, the external parameters of each RGB-D camera is calibrated so that the coordinates of the sphere center coincide in the world coordinate system.

  • One of the major limitations of productivity and quality in metal cutting is the machining accuracy of machine tools. The machining accuracy is affected by geometric errors, thermally-induced errors, and the deterioration of the machine tools. Geometric and thermal errors of machine tools should be measured and compensated to manufacture high quality products. In metal cutting, the machining accuracy is more affected by thermal errors than by geometric errors. This paper models of the thermal errors for error analysis and develops on-the-machine measurement system by which the volumetric error are measured and compensated. The thermal error is modeled by means of angularity errors of a column and thermal drift error of the spindle unit which are measured by the touch probe unit with a star type styluses and a designed spherical ball artifact (SBA). Experiments, performed with the developed measurement system, show that the system provides a high measuring accuracy, with repeatability of $\pm$2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in X, Y and Z directions. It is believed that the developed measurement system can be also applied to the machine tools with CNC controller. In addition, machining accuracy and product quality can be improved by using the developed measurement system when the spherical ball artifact is mounted on the modular fixture.
