Recently, touch screen systems with direct touch interfaces are prevailing in digital products such as MP3's, DMB's, PDA's and navigators, which give rise to new interface issues related to speed, feedback and accuracy, and consider additional considerations for solving those issues in evaluation processes. Although paper prototyping method, the one of applicable methods, is efficient ways to evaluate the touch interface, it still requires a certain amount of adaptations for touch interfaces. This study aims to identify emerged issues regarding to paper-prototyping method for the evaluation of touch interface, to come up with alternatives for applying the method. The study started with analyzing the touch interface in digital products, and suggests the 'Touch Wheel' interface based on mainly used interface. 'Touch Wheel' interface allows the user searching for her/his favorite songs by rolling 'wheel-like' menu list. The Userbility test was conducted by 24 MP3 users with 4 times, and based on such conditions as materials, making methods and evaluating process of paper prototyping for evaluating the touch interface, effective alternatives were considered in each evaluation steps. As a result, paper prototypes for evaluating the touch interface should give active operations to subjects by offering direct experience, so as to provide subjects with proper feedbacks and for designers to collect effective alternatives for expected problems in initial interface design process.

PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of size and depth of cavities on the pavement failure using the full-scale accelerated pavement testing. METHODS : A full-scale testbed was constructed by installing the artificial cavities at a depth of 0.3 m and 0.7 m from the pavement surface for accelerated pavement testing. The cavities were made of ice with a dimension of 0.5 m*0.5m*0.3m, and the thickness of asphalt and base layer were 0.2 m and 0.3 m, respectively. The ground penetrating radar and endoscope testing were conducted to determine the shape and location of cavities. The falling weight deflectometer testing was also performed on the cavity and intact sections to estimate the difference of structural capacity between the two sections. A wheel loading of 80 kN was applied on the pavement section with a speed of 10 km/h in accelerated pavement testing. The permanent deformation was measured periodically at a given number of repetitions. The correlation between the depth and size of cavities and pavement failure was investigated using the accelerated pavement testing results. RESULTS : It is found from FWD testing that the center deflection of cavity section is 10% greater than that of the intact section, indicating the 25% reduction of modulus in subbase layer due to the occurrence of the cavity. The measured permanent deformation of the intact section is approximately 10 mm at 90,000 load repetitions. However, for a cavity section of 0.7 m depth, a permanent deformation of 30 mm was measured at 90,000 load repetitions, which is three times greater than that of the intact section. At cavity section of 0.3 m, the permanent deformation reached up to approximately 90 mm and an elliptical hole occurred at pavement surface after testing. CONCLUSIONS : This study is aimed at determining the pavement failure mechanism due to the occurrence of cavities under the pavement using accelerated pavement testing. In the future, the accelerated pavement testing will be conducted at a pavement section with different depths and sizes of cavities. Test results will be utilized to establish the criteria of risk in road collapse based on the various conditions.
Research was focused on the improvement of poor drainage problems on golf course fairway which had not been performed soil test or properly amended during the course construction. The analysis of the drainage problem basically was caused by a deterioration of soil physical properties by the top layer compaction. The soil hardness reached about 3,000 Kpa around 5~6 cm of soil profile. The slow infiltration speed to subsoil by the compaction was caused directly a poor drainage capacity. However, the properly amended sand soil showed an apparent value of 1,500 Kpa through the subsoil. The water content test showed a similar result that higher rate of 20~30% and ideal rate of 8~12% at poor drainage area and successfully amended area, respectively. However, an imported topsoil media which had higher content of silt and clay from a trans-planted sod had made a heterogeneous soil profile and that caused a poor drain capacity by a low infiltration rate. Those drainage problems triggered to buildup a reduced soil layer by poor soil gas exchange. The soil environment of deoxidation enhanced anaerobic microbial population and induced methane gas build-up to 55 ppm, and that resulted an adverse effect on turf growth by root growth retardation, consequently.
In this study, the effects of MTBE contents as oxygenates in gasoline on exhaust emissions and fuel economy in MPI and GDi vehicles have been investigated. Various oxygen contents have been selected such as 0, 1.0, 2.3 and 2.7 wt%. FTP-75 and HWFET modes as fuel economy test methods which are widely used in Republic of Korea and US were applied to investigate exhaust emissions from the test vehicles. Emissions of CO, NMHC and NOx did not show significant correlation with oxygen contents in gasoline fuels, although having slight difference with these contents. In addition, CO2 emissions were not significantly changed with respect to oxygen content. But in case of warm-up and FTP-75 and HWFET modes including high speed regimes, CO2 emissions showed inverse correlation with oxygen contents. Particulate number concentration was inversely proportional to the oxygen contents, having the minimum value at the condition of 2.3 wt%. In case of fuel economy through carbon balance method, the highest value has been obtained at 2.3 wt% and there was positive correlation with oxygen contents and fuel economy.

Many traffic centers are highly hesitant in employing existing Automatic Incident Detection Algorithms due to high false alarm rate, low detection rate, and enormous effort taken in maintaining algorithm parameters, together with complex algorithm structure and filtering/smoothing process. Concerns grow over the situation particularly in Freeway Incident Management Area This study proposes a new algorithm and introduces a novel concept, the Displaced Flow Index (DiFI) which is similar to a product of relative speed and relative occupancy for every execution period. The algorithm structure is very simple, also easy to understand with minimum parameters, and could use raw data without any additional pre-processing. To evaluate the performance of the DiFI algorithm, validation test on the algorithm has been conducted using detector data taken from Naebu Expressway in Seoul and following transferability tests with Gyeongbu Expressway detector data. Performance test has utilized many indices such as DR, FAR, MTTD (Mean Time To Detect), CR (Classification Rate), CI (Composite Index) and PI (Performance Index). It was found that the DR is up to 100%, the MTTD is a little over 1.0 minutes, and the FAR is as low as 2.99%. This newly designed algorithm seems promising and outperformed SAO and most popular AIDAs such as APID and DELOS, and showed the best performance in every category.
The paper presents the rotordynamic performance measurements and model predictions of a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) air compressor supported on gas foil bearings (GFBs). The rotor has an impeller on one end and a thrust runner on the other end. The front (impeller side) and rear (thrust side) gas foil journal bearings (GFJBs) are located between the impeller and thrust runner to support the radial loads, and a pair of gas foil thrust bearings are located on both sides of the thrust runner to support the axial loads. The test GFJBs have a partial arc shim foil installed between the top foil and bump strip layers to enhance hydrodynamic pressure generation. During the rotordynamic performance tests, two sets of orthogonally installed eddy-current displacement sensors measure the rotor radial motions at the rotor impeller and thrust ends. A series of speed-up and coast-down tests to 100k rpm demonstrates the dominant synchronous (1X) rotor responses to imbalance masses without noticeable subsynchronous motions, which indicates a rotordynamically stable rotor-GFB system. Finite element analysis of the rotor determines the rotor free-free (bending) natural modes and frequencies well beyond the maximum rotating frequency. The predicted damped natural frequencies and damping ratios of the rotor-GFB system reveal rotordynamic stability over the speeds of interest. The imbalance response predictions show that the predicted critical speeds and rotor amplitudes strongly agree with the test measurements, thus validating the developed rotordynamic model.

Micro hydropower is a readily available renewable energy source that can be harvested utilizing hydrokinetic turbines from shallow water canals, irrigation and industrial channel flows, and run-off river stream flows. These sources generally have low head (<1 m) and low velocity which makes it difficult to harvest energy using conventional turbines. A horizontal-axis screw turbine was designed and numerically tested to extract power from such low-head water sources. The 3-bladed screw-type turbine is placed horizontally perpendicular to the incoming flow, partially submerged in a narrow water channel at no-head condition. The turbine hydraulic performances were studied using Computational Fluid Dynamics models. Turbine design parameters such as the shroud diameter, the hub-to-shroud ratios, and the submerged depths were obtained through a steady-state parametric study. The resulting turbine configuration was then tested by solving the unsteady multiphase free-surface equations mimicking an actual open channel flow scenario. The turbine performance in the shallow channel were studied for various Tip Speed Ratios (TSR). The highest power coefficient was obtained at a TSR of 0.3. The turbine was then scaled-up to test its performance on a real site condition at a head of 0.3 m. The highest power coefficient obtained was 0.18. Several losses were observed in the 3-bladed turbine design and to minimize losses, the number of blades were increased to five. The power coefficient improved by 236% for a 5-bladed screw turbine. The fluid losses were minimized by increasing the blade surface area submerged in water. The turbine performance was increased by 74.4% after dipping the turbine to a bottom wall clearance of 30 cm from 60 cm. The final output of the novel horizontal-axis screw turbine showed a 2.83 kW power output at a power coefficient of 0.63. The turbine is expected to produce 18,744 kWh/year of electricity. The design feasibility test of the turbine showed promising results to harvest energy from small hydropower sources.

This study introduces the development of a precast concrete double-wall, applicable to basement construction in apartment buildings. Unlike traditional precast concrete double walls, the developed double-wall doesn't require specialized manufacturing equipment such as a lathe. The constructability of these advanced technologies was validated through a full-scale mock-up test using the precast concrete double wall. The test specimens were constructed to represent a structural wall with a thickness of 250mm. It was observed that the quality of the in-situ concrete, filled between two single panels of 110mm thickness each, was excellent. The construction efficiency of the developed double-wall system for basement construction in an apartment building was also examined. Expert interviews about installation times of precast concrete elements were conducted to evaluate the speed of the basement floor's installation. The results showed that installation of precast concrete elements, including the proposed double walls, could be completed within 20 to 29 days for a basement in an apartment building. This indicates a three-fold increase in construction efficiency compared to traditional methods relying on in-situ casting.

A study was carried out in order to estimate the deformation of the pound net according to the current by the model test in the circulating water channel. The tension of the frame rope and the variation of net shape were measured to investigate the deforming of the model pound net in the flow. The results are obtained as follows; 1. The experimental equation between tensions (R) of the frame rope and velocity (ν)was found to be R=$19.58v^{1.98}$($r^2$=0.98) in case of the upperward flow with fish court net and R=$26.90v^{1.72}$($r^2$=0.95)at the upperward flow with bag net according to the velocity from 0.0m/s to 0.6m/s, respectively. 2. As the variation of flow speed inside of the model net was gradually decreased according as which is passed through netting panels, in case of the upperward flow with fish court net, the flow speed was about 70% of initial flow speed at 0.1m/s, 60% at 0.2m/s, 50% at 0.3m/s and 40% 0.4~0.6m/s at the measurement point(h) inside of the first bag net, respectively. In case of the upperward flow with bag net, as the flow speed was steeply decreased according as which if passed through the second bag net, it was 30~60% of the initial flow speed and was 20~30% inside of the first bag net and was about 10~20% inside of the inclined passage net. 3. In case of the upperward flow with fish court net, the variation of deformed angle of fish court net was from 0$^{\circ}$ to 70$^{\circ}$and that of inclined passage net was from 0$^{\circ}$ to 63$^{\circ}$and that of the second bag net was from 0$^{\circ}$ to 47$^{\circ}$ . 4. In case of the upperward flow with fish court net, the variation of deformed angle of the second bag net was changed from 0$^{\circ}$ to 70$^{\circ}$and that of the inclined passage net was from 0$^{\circ}$ to 55$^{\circ}$ and that of the fish court net was from 0$^{\circ}$ to 50$^{\circ}$. The depth ratio of the first bag net was changed from 0% to 35% and that of the second bag net was from 0% to 20% and that of the inclined passage net was from 0% to 35%. In the flow speed 0.5m/s, the inclined passage net was raised up to the entry of the bag net and then prevented it more over 90%. 5. To be increased the opening volume of pound net, it needs to attach the added weight outside of the fish court net, inclined passage net and bag net. At the same time, it needs to adjust the tension of the twine for maintenance of the shape.
