In this paper, we study a noise-robust feature extraction method of speech signal based on auditory modeling. The auditory model consists of a basilar membrane, a hair cell model and spectrum output stage. Basilar membrane model describes a response characteristic of membrane according to vibration in speech wave, and is represented as a band-pass filter bank. Hair cell model describes a neural transduction according to displacements of the basilar membrane. It responds adaptively to relative values of input and plays an important role for noise-robustness. Spectrum output stage constructs a mean rate spectrum using the average firing rate of each channel. And we extract feature vectors using a mean rate spectrum. Simulation results show that when auditory-based feature extraction is used, the speech recognition performance in noisy environments is improved compared to other feature extraction methods.
In this paper, we study continuous speech recognition of Korean language using acoustic models of word juncture coarticulation. To alleviate the performance degradation due to coarticulation problems, we use context-dependent units that model inter-word transitions in addition to intra-word transitions. In all cases the initial phone of each word has to be specified for each possible final phone of the previous word similarly for the final phone of each word. To improve the robustness of the HMM parameters, the covariance matrix is smoothed. We also use position-dependent units to improve the discriminative power between units. Simulation results show that when the improved models of word juncture coarticulation are used. the recognition performance is considerably improved compared to the baseline system using only intra-word units.
Voice interactions are particularly effective in applications targeting the digital underprivileged who are not proficient in the use of smart devices. However, applications based on open APIs are using voice signals only for short, fragmentary input and output due to the limitations of existing touchscreen-oriented UI and API provided. In this paper, we design a conversational voice interaction model for interactions between users and intelligent mobile/IoT applications and propose a keyword detection algorithm based on the edit distance. The proposed model and scheme were implemented in an Android environment, and the edit distance-based keyword detection algorithm showed a higher recognition rate than the existing algorithm for keywords that were incorrectly recognized through speech recognition.
The conversational agents such as AI speakers utilize voice conversation for human-computer interaction. Voice recognition errors often occur in conversational situations. Recognition errors in user utterance records can be categorized into two types. The first type is misrecognition errors, where the agent fails to recognize the user's speech entirely. The second type is misinterpretation errors, where the user's speech is recognized and services are provided, but the interpretation differs from the user's intention. Among these, misinterpretation errors require separate error detection as they are recorded as successful service interactions. In this study, various text separation methods were applied to detect misinterpretation. For each of these text separation methods, the similarity of consecutive speech pairs using word embedding and document embedding techniques, which convert words and documents into vectors. This approach goes beyond simple word-based similarity calculation to explore a new method for detecting misinterpretation errors. The research method involved utilizing real user utterance records to train and develop a detection model by applying patterns of misinterpretation error causes. The results revealed that the most significant analysis result was obtained through initial consonant extraction for detecting misinterpretation errors caused by the use of unregistered neologisms. Through comparison with other separation methods, different error types could be observed. This study has two main implications. First, for misinterpretation errors that are difficult to detect due to lack of recognition, the study proposed diverse text separation methods and found a novel method that improved performance remarkably. Second, if this is applied to conversational agents or voice recognition services requiring neologism detection, patterns of errors occurring from the voice recognition stage can be specified. The study proposed and verified that even if not categorized as errors, services can be provided according to user-desired results.
A Phonetic Tied-Mixture (PTM) model has been proposed as a way of efficient decoding in large vocabulary continuous speech recognition systems (LVCSR). It has been reported that PTM model shows better performance in decoding than triphones by sharing a set of mixture components among states of the same topological location[5]. In this paper we propose a Phonetic Tied-Mixture Syllable (PTMS) model which extends PTM technique up to syllables. The proposed PTMS model shows 13% enhancement in decoding speed than PTM. In spite of difference in context dependent modeling (PTM : cross-word context dependent modeling, PTMS : word-internal left-phone dependent modeling), the proposed model shows just less than 1% degradation in word accuracy than PTM with the same beam width. With a different beam width, it shows better word accuracy than in PTM at the same or higher speed.
General speaker verification systems improve their recognition performances by normalizing log likelihood ratio, using a speaker model and its background speaker model that are required to be verified. So these systems rely heavily on the availability of much speaker independent databases for background speaker model design. This constraint, however, may be a burden in practical and portable devices such as palm-top computers or wireless handsets which place a premium on computations and memory. In this paper, new approach for the GMM-based background model design used in portable speaker verification system is presented when the enrollment data is available. This approach is to modify three parameters of GMM speaker model such as mixture weights, means and covariances along with reduced mixture order. According to the experiment on a 20 speaker population from YOHO database, we found that this method had a promise of effective use in a portable speaker verification system.
In this paper, study and experiments are performed for finding recognition unit fit which can be used in large vocabulary recognition system. Specifically, a phoneme that is currently used as recognition unit and a syllable in which Korean is well characterized are selected. From comparisons of recognition experiments, the study is performed whether a syllable can be considered as recognition unit of Korean recognition system. For report of an objective result of the comparison experiment, we collected speech data of a male speaker and processed them by hand-segmentation for phoneme boundary and labeling to construct speech database. And for training and recognition based on HMM, we used HTK (HMM Tool Kit) 2.0 of commercial tool from Entropic Co. to experiment in same condition. We applied two HMM model topologies, 3 emitting state of 5 state and 6 emitting state of 8 state, in Continuous HMM on training of each recognition unit. We also used 3 sets of PBW (Phonetically Balanced Words) and 1 set of POW(Phonetically Optimized Words) for training and another 1 set of PBW for recognition, that is "Speaker Dependent Medium Vocabulary Size Recognition." Experiments result reports that recognition rate is 95.65% in phoneme unit, 94.41% in syllable unit and decoding time of recognition in syllable unit is faster by 25% than in phoneme.
This paper presents a FSN-based LVCSR system and it's application to the speech TV program guide. Unlike the most popular statistical language model-based system, we used FSN grammar based on the graph theory-based FSN optimization algorithm and knowledge-based advanced word boundary modeling. For the memory and latency efficiency, we implemented the dynamic pruning scheduling based on the histogram of active words and their likelihood distribution. We achieved a 10.7% word accuracy improvement with 57.3% speedup.

In this paper, we adopt a transformer that shows remarkable performance in natural language processing as an acoustic model of hybrid speech recognition. The transformer acoustic model uses attention structures to process sequential data and shows high performance with low computational cost. This paper proposes a method to improve the performance of transformer AM by applying each of the four algorithms of sequence discriminative training, a weighted finite-state transducer (wFST)-based learning used in the existing DNN-HMM model. In addition, compared to the Cross Entropy (CE) learning method, sequence discriminative method shows 5 % of the relative Word Error Rate (WER).
