In cognitive radios, secondary users can use the spectrum exclusively allocated to a primary wireless system if the secondary users detect the spectrum in idle states. Because the secondary users can utilize the idle state of the spectrum, the utilization rate of the spectrum can be improved. The idle states can be detected by using secondary users' sensing schemes. However, the wireless channel environment where secondary users perform the spectrum sensing is not very friendly to secondary users because the signal-to-noise ratio of the received primary signal is very low. Hence, cooperative sensing scheme where more than one secondary user take part in the spectrum sensing is generally used in cognitive radios. In this paper, we investigate the cooperative sensing performance for machine-to-machine communication devices operated by batteries with limited energy. In general, the energy consumed for the spectrum sensing increases as the length of the sensing period and the number of cooperative sensing nodes. Accordingly, even though the total amount of the consumed energy is the same, an energy allocation methodology how to distribute the energy to the sensing period and sensing nodes can achieve the optimum sensing performance, which is numerically analyzed.

Cognitive radio is an efficient technique to improve spectrum efficiency and relieve the pressure of spectrum resources. In this paper, we investigate the spectrum sensing period in cooperative relay cognitive radio networks; analyze the relationship between the available capacity and the signal-to-noise ratio of the received signal of second users, the target probability of detection and the active probability of primary users. Finally, we derive the closed form expression of the optimal spectrum sensing period in terms of maximum throughput. We simulate the probability of false alarm and available capacity of cognitive radio networks and compare optimal spectrum sensing period scheme with fixed sensing period one in these performance. Simulation results show that the optimal sensing period makes the cognitive networks achieve the higher throughput and better spectrum sensing performance than the fixed sensing period does. Cooperative relay cognitive radio networks with optimal spectrum sensing period can achieve the high capacity and steady probability of false alarm in different target probability of detection. It provides a valuable reference for choosing the optimal spectrum sensing period in cooperative relay cognitive radio networks.
Spectrum sensing is an essential function that enables cognitive radio technology to explore spectral holes and resourcefully access them without any harmful interference to the licenses user. Spectrum sensing done by a single node is highly affected by fading and shadowing. Thus, to overcome this, cooperative spectrum sensing was introduced. Currently, the advancements in multiple antennas have given a new dimension to cognitive radio research. In this paper, we propose a multiple energy detector for cooperative spectrum sensing schemes based on the evidence theory. Also, we propose a reporting mechanism for multiple energy detectors. With our proposed system, we show that a multiple energy detector using a cooperative spectrum sensing scheme based on evidence theory increases the reliability of the system, which ultimately increases the spectrum sensing and reduces the reporting time. Also in simulation results, we show the probability of error for the proposed system. Our simulation results show that our proposed system outperforms the conventional energy detector system.

This paper proposes two wideband spectrum sensing approaches: (i) method A, the cumulative sum (CUSUM) algorithm with short-time Fourier transform, taking advantage of the time-frequency analysis for wideband spectrum. (ii)method B, the quickest spectrum sensing with short-time Fourier transform and compressed sensing, shortening the time of perception and improving the speed of spectrum access or exit. Moreover, method B can take advantage of the sparsity of wideband signals, sampling in the sub-Nyquist rate, and it is more suitable for wideband spectrum sensing. Simulation results show that method A significantly outperforms the single serial CUSUM detection for small SNRs, while method B is substantially better than the block detection based spectrum sensing in small probability of the false alarm.
Recently, spectrum sensing has been intensively studied as a key technology in realizing the cognitive radio. There have been advances in the performance of spectrum sensing through both multi-antenna and cooperative sensing schemes. In this paper, the performances and complicated scenarios of the latest spectrum sensing schemes are analytically compared and arranged into a technical tree while considering practical concerns. This paper will give a macroscopic view of spectrum sensing and will also provide insight into future spectrum sensing works.
Cognitive networks (CNs) are capable of enabling dynamic spectrum allocation, and thus constitute a promising technology for future wireless communication. Whereas, the implementation of CN will lead to the requirement of an increased energy-arrival rate, which is a significant parameter in energy harvesting design of a cognitive user (CU) device. A well-designed spectrum-sensing scheme will lower the energy-arrival rate that is required and enable CNs to self-sustain, which will also help alleviate global warming. In this paper, spectrum sensing in a multi-user cognitive ad hoc network with a wide-band spectrum is considered. Based on the prospective spectrum sensing, we classify CN operation into two modes: Distributed and centralized. In a distributed network, each CU conducts spectrum sensing for its own data transmission, while in a centralized network, there is only one cognitive cluster header which performs spectrum sensing and broadcasts its sensing results to other CUs. Thus, a wide-band spectrum that is divided into multiple sub-channels can be sensed simultaneously in a distributed manner or sequentially in a centralized manner. We consider the energy consumption for spectrum sensing only of an analog-to-digital convertor (ADC). By formulating energy consumption for spectrum sensing in terms of the sub-channel sampling rate and whole-band sensing time, the sampling rate and whole-band sensing time that are optimal for minimizing the total energy consumption within sensing reliability constraints are obtained. A power dissipation model of an ADC, which plays an important role in formulating the energy efficiency problem, is presented. Using AD9051 as an ADC example, our numerical results show that the optimal sensing parameters will achieve a reduction in the energy-arrival rate of up to 97.7% and 50% in a distributed and a centralized network, respectively, when comparing the optimal and worst-case energy consumption for given system settings.

Cognitive radio has been recently considered a promising technology to improve spectrum utilization by enabling secondary access to licensed bands that are not used by primary users temporarily or spatially. A prerequisite to this secondary access is the lack of interference to the primary system. This requirement makes spectrum sensing a key process for cognitive radio. In this study, we consider amplify and forward (AF)-based cooperative spectrum sensing for cognitive radio networks where multiple relay nodes are utilized to amplify and forward the primary user signal for better spectrum sensing, and maximum ratio combining is used for fusion detection by a cognitive coordinator. Further, the detection probability and the bit error rate of AF-based cooperative spectrum sensing are analyzed in fading multiple cognitive relay channels. The simulation results show that the AF-based cooperative spectrum sensing scheme outperforms the conventional scheme.
Cognitive Radio has attracted intensive interests of the researchers, recently. The data rate always increases in the emerging technologies. The increased data rate poses mainly two challenges for spectrum sensing. One is that the state of primary user (PU) is fast and alternatively varying between "on/off" in a spectrum sensing window. The other is that the asynchronicity among the reports in a cooperative spectrum sensing setting becomes more apparent. Both of them would deteriorate the spectrum sensing performance. Thus, we propose an asynchronous cooperative spectrum sensing method to cope with these two challenges. A likelihood ratio test based spectrum sensing is developed for a single cooperator. The likelihood ratio is obtained in the setting of fast varying PU state. The likelihood ratio test is uniformly powerful according to the Neyman-pearson lemma. Furthermore, the asynchronicity among the cooperators are studied. Two sets of fusion weights are discussed for the asynchronous time among cooperators. One is designed based on the condition probability of the PU state variation and the other one is designed based on the queueing theory. The simulation results are provided with different fusion methods. The performance improvements are demonstrated.

Cognitive radio (CR) is proposed as a key solution to improve spectral efficiency and overcome the spectrum scarcity. Spectrum sensing is an important task in each CR system with the aim of identifying the spectrum holes and using them for secondary user's (SU) communications. Several conventional methods for spectrum sensing have been proposed such as energy detection, matched filter detection, etc. However, the main limitation of these classical methods is that the CR network is not able to communicate with its own base station during the spectrum sensing period and thus a fraction of the available primary frame cannot be exploited for data transmission. The other limitation in conventional methods is that the SU data frames should be synchronized with the primary network data frames. To overcome the above limitations, here, we propose a spectrum sensing technique based on blind source separation (BSS) that does not need time synchronization between the primary network and the CR. Moreover, by using the proposed technique, the SU can maintain its transmission with the base station even during spectrum sensing and thus higher rates are achieved by the CR network. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method outperforms the accuracy of conventional BSS-based spectrum sensing techniques.

Radio spectrum is a precious resource and characterized by fixed allocation policy. However, a large portion of the allocated radio spectrum is underutilized. Conversely, the rapid development of ubiquitous wireless technologies increases the demand for radio spectrum. Cognitive Radio (CR) methodologies have been introduced as a promising approach in detecting the white spaces, allowing the unlicensed users to use the licensed spectrum thus realizing Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) in an effective manner. This paper proposes a generalized framework for DSA between the licensed (primary) and unlicensed (secondary) users based on Continuous Time Markov Chain (CTMC) model. We present a spectrum access scheme in the presence of sensing errors based on CTMC which aims to attain optimum spectrum access probabilities for the secondary users. The primary user occupancy is identified by spectrum sensing algorithms and the sensing errors are captured in the form of false alarm and mis-detection. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed spectrum access scheme in terms of the throughput attained by the secondary users, throughput optimization using optimum access probabilities, probability of interference with increasing number of secondary users. The efficacy of the algorithm is analyzed for both imperfect spectrum sensing and perfect spectrum sensing.
