  • We propose a characterization method for the scattering property of microspheres using spectroscopic optical coherence tomography (OCT). To prove the effectiveness of the proposed method, we prepare solutions of different concentrations using microspheres ranging from 28 to 2300 nm in diameter. Time-frequency analysis is performed on the measured interference spectrum of each solution, and the resulting spectroscopic information is converted into histograms for centroid wavelengths. The histograms present a very sensitive response to changes in the concentration and size of microspheres. We classify them into three categories according to their characteristics. When the histogram of each category is replaced with the corresponding calculated value of the scattering coefficient, each category is mapped to a different scattering-coefficient region. It is expected that the proposed method could be used to investigate the optical characteristics of a biological sample from OCT images, which would be helpful for optical diagnostic and therapeutic applications.

  • This paper describes a development of a fiber optic common-path optical coherence tomography (OCT) based imaging and guided system that possess ability to reliably identify optically transparent targets that are on the micron scale; ability to maintain a precise and safe position from the target; ability to provide spectroscopic imaging; ability to imaging biological target in 3-D. The system is based on a high resolution fiber optic Common-Path OCT (CP-OCT) that can be integrated into various mini-probes and tools. The system is capable of obtaining >70K A-scan per second with a resolution better than $3\;{\mu}m$. We have demonstrated that the system is capable of one-dimensional real-time depth tracking, tool motion limiting and motion compensation, oxygen-saturation level imaging, and high resolution 3-D images for various biomedical applications.

  • Geraniol (1) is the biogenetic precursor of a number of monoterpenes. We tested various marine-derived microorganisms to determine their ability to biotransform 1. Only Hypocrea sp. was capable of transforming 1 into its oxidized derivative, 1,7-dihydroxy-3,7-dimethyl-(E)-oct-2-ene (2). The structure of the metabolite obtained was assigned on the basis of detailed spectroscopic data analyses.

  • The synthesis, as well as spectroscopic and biological studies of a novel class of [3-(4-substitutedphenylamino)-8-azabicyclo [3.2.1] oct-8yl]-phenyl-methanone derivatives are described. All the synthesized compounds were characterized by elemental analysis FTIR, $^1H$-NMR, $^{13}C$ NMR, and Mass spectral data. All the synthesized compounds were exhibit in vitro antibacterial activity.

  • VV Cep-type long period spectroscopic-eclipsing binary AZ Cas has been observed for five years, 1985 Oct~1990 Feb, UBV at the Ilsan Station of Yonsei University Observatory. A total of 431 observations (U=129, B=142 and V=160) are made for 86 nights. Instrumental differential UBV and B-V light curves made with these observations cover phases nearly a half of one period. There is no appreciable light variation in V but in other two passbands a gradual decrease of the brightness is clearly noticed. The loss of light in B resulted in a reddening in $\Delta(B-V)$ by + 0.06 at phases between 0.4~0.5 as compared with that of at phase ~0.1. This intrinsic reddening arouses a question why at the orbital phase of the transit of a hot star in front of a cool M supergiant the heating of the facing hemisphere of M supergiant by the strong radiation from the B stat is absent. With regard to this unusual situation we propose a hypothesis that a large amount of gas stream of low temperature ejected from the surface of M supergiant component towards the B star dominates the brightness of B star and the reflection effect.

  • We report the effect of the amount of the mesoporous material, SBA-15, on the basic traits of fully aliphatic polyimides (API). For this purpose, water soluble, fully aliphatic poly(amic acid) triethyl amine salts ($PAA_{(s)}$) were prepared and mixed with various amounts of SBA-15. Fully aliphatic polyimide hybrid composites containing the SBA 15-type mesoporous silica were synthesized successfully from bicyclo [2.2.2] oct-7-ene-2,3,5,6-tetracarboxylic dianhydride and alicyclic diamine, 4,4'-methylene bis(2-methylcyclohexylamine). The structure of the hybrid composites was confirmed by IR spectroscopic analysis. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the morphology of the compounds. The hybrid composites exhibited good thermal stability, reasonable transparency, and a low dielectric constant.

  • We secured the high dispersion spectra of the symbiotic star CI Cyg. The HI, HeI, and HeII line profiles were analyzed using the relatively long exposure data including 1800 sec (Sep. 12, 1998, phase=0.90), 3600 sec (Aug. 12, 2002, ${\phi}=0.47$), and 1800 sec (Oct. 21, 2009, ${\phi}=0.54$). Although a minor outburst was reported in 2008, our three observation periods were generally known to be quiescent in earlier photometric studies. With the help of hydrodynamic simulations, we identified the two emission zones responsible for the blue- and red-shifted line components: (a) an accretion disk around a hot white dwarf star which consists of the outer cool HeI emission zone and the inner hot HeII emission part, and (b) a high density zone near the inner Lagrangian point responsible for the HeI line flux variation and the broadening of its line profile. The HeII line fluxes indicate that the HeII emission zone of the accretion disk is relatively stable, implying a constant gas inflow from the giant star throughout the quiescent period. The 2002 HeI data showed that the notable mass flow activity through the inner Lagrangian point occurred during this period and its flux intensity became strongest, whereas the HeII line width in the same period indicates that its flow activity forced the accretion disk to expand. The [OIII] lines were observed in 1998 but not detected in 2002 and 2009, implying the disappearance of the low density zone. Based on our kinematical studies upon the line profiles, we conclude that CI Cyg was stable in 1998 among the three observation periods selected in this research.
