Design spectra for damping ratios higher than 5% have several important applications in the design of earthquake-resistant structures. These highly damped spectra are usually derived from a 5%-damped reference pseudo-acceleration spectrum by using a damping modification factor. In cases of high damping, the absolute acceleration and the relative velocity spectra instead of the pseudo-acceleration and the pseudo-velocity spectra should be used. This paper elaborates on the recovery of spectral absolute acceleration and spectral relative velocity from their pseudo-spectral counterparts. This is accomplished with the aid of correction factors obtained through extensive parametric studies, which come out to be functions of period and damping ratio.
An improvement to the spectral representation algorithm for the simulation of wind velocity fields on large scale structures is proposed in this paper. The method proposed by Deodatis (1996) serves as the basis of the improved algorithm. Firstly, an interpolation approximation is introduced to simplify the computation of the lower triangular matrix with the Cholesky decomposition of the cross-spectral density (CSD) matrix, since each element of the triangular matrix varies continuously with the wind spectra frequency. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) technique is used to further enhance the efficiency of computation. Secondly, as an alternative spectral representation, the vectors of the triangular matrix in the Deodatis formula are replaced using an appropriate number of eigenvectors with the spectral decomposition of the CSD matrix. Lastly, a turbulent wind velocity field through a vertical plane on a long-span bridge (span-wise) is simulated to illustrate the proposed schemes. It is noted that the proposed schemes require less computer memory and are more efficiently simulated than that obtained using the existing traditional method. Furthermore, the reliability of the interpolation approximation in the simulation of wind velocity field is confirmed.
Turbulence is a crucial component of dynamics of astrophysical fluids dynamics, including those of ISM, clusters of galaxies and circumstellar regions. Doppler shifted spectral lines provide a unique source of information on turbulent velocities. We discuss Velocity-Channel Analysis (VCA) and its offspring Velocity Coordinate Spectrum (VCS) that are based on the analytical description of the spectral line statistics. Those techniques are well suited for studies of supersonic turbulence. We stress that a great advantage of VCS is that it does not necessary require good spatial resolution. Addressing the studies of mildly supersonic and subsonic turbulence we discuss the criterion that allows to determine whether Velocity Centroids are dominated by density or velocity. We briefly discuss ways of going beyond power spectra by using of higher order correlations as well as genus analysis. We outline the relation between Spectral Correlation Functions and the statistics available through VCA and VCS.

In this study, for estimating responses of a controlled structure and determining the maximum control force of velocity-dependent damping devices, three estimation models such as Fourier envelope convex model, probability model, and Newmark design spectrum are used. For this purpose, a procedure proposed by Gupta (1990) for estimating spectral velocity using pseudo-spectral velocity which is given by the estimation models is used and modified to consider the effects of increased damping ratio by the damping device. Time history results indicate that Newmark design spectrum gives the best estimation of maximum control force for over all period structures.

Wind turbulence data is required for engineering calculations of gust speeds, mean and fluctuating loading. Spectral densities are required as input data for methods used in assessing dynamic response. This study is concerned with the estimation of daily instantaneous maximum wind velocity in the meteorological major cities (selected each 6 points) during the yearly 1987-2016.12.1. The purpose of this paper is to present the power spectral densities of the daily instantaneous maximum wind velocity. In the processes of analysis, used observations data obtained at Korea Meteorological Adminstration(KMA), it is assumed as a random processes. From the analysis results, in the paper estimated power spectral densities function(Blunt model) shows a very closed with von Karman and Solari's spectrum models.

In this study, the generalized intensity measure (IM) named INpg is analyzed. The recently proposed proxy of the spectral shape named Npg is the base of this intensity measure, which is similar to the traditional Np based on the spectral shape in terms of pseudo-acceleration; however, in this case the new generalized intensity measure can be defined through other types of spectral shapes such as those obtained with velocity, displacement, input energy, inelastic parameters and so on. It is shown that this IM is able to increase the efficiency in the prediction of nonlinear behavior of structures subjected to earthquake ground motions. For this work, the efficiency of two particular cases (based on acceleration and velocity) of the generalized INpg to predict the peak floor acceleration demands on steel frames under 30 earthquake ground motions with respect to the traditional spectral acceleration at first mode of vibration Sa(T1) is compared. Additionally, a 3D reinforced concrete building and an irregular steel frame is used as a basis for comparison. It is concluded that the use of velocity and acceleration spectral shape increase the efficiency to predict peak floor accelerations in comparison with the traditional and most used around the world spectral acceleration at first mode of vibration.

In this paper, a spectral element model is developed for the uniform straight pipelines conveying internal unsteady fluid. Four coupled pipe-dynamics equations are derived first by using the Hamilton's principle and the principles of fluid mechanics. The transverse displacement, the axial displacement, the fluid pressure and the fluid velocity are all considered as the dependent variables. The coupled pipe-dynamics equations are then linearized about the steady state values of the fluid pressure and velocity. As the final step, the spectral element model represented by the exact dynamic stiffness matrix, which is often called spectral element matrix, is formulated by using the frequency-domain solutions of the linearized pipe-dynamics equations. The FFT-based spectral dynamic analyses are conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the present spectral element model and also to investigate the structural dynamic characteristics and the internal fluid transients of an example pipeline system.

This study suggests a prediction model of ground motion spectral shape considering characteristics of earthquake records in Korea. Based on the Graizer and Kalkan's prediction procedure, a spectral shape model is defined as a continuous function of period in order to improve the complex problems of the conventional models. The approximate spectral shape function is then developed with parameters such as moment magnitude, fault distance, and average shear velocity of independent variables. This paper finally determines estimator coefficients of subfunctions which explain the corelation among the independent variables using the nonlinear optimization. As a result of generating the prediction model of ground motion spectral shape, the ground motion spectral shape well estimates the response spectrum of earthquake recordings in Korea.

The formerly proposed spectral model of turbulent burning velocity is refined for nonstoichiometric hydrocarbon mixtures. Refinements are made in regard to the following two points : (1) an effect of the diffusivity of deficient reactant on the turbulent burning velocity and (2) consideration of increasing laminar name thickness with a decrease in the laminar burning velocity A comparison between the predicted turbulent velocities and the measured ones is made. The predictions by the refined spectral model agree quantatively well with the experimental results in the regime of practical equivalence ratio, but not in the high and low equivalence ratio regime.
Recently, two energy-based response parameters, i.e., the absolute and the relative elastic input energy equivalent velocity, have been receiving a lot of research attention. Several studies, in fact, have demonstrated the potential of these intensity measures in the prediction of the seismic structural response. Although some ground motion prediction equations have been developed for these parameters, they only provide marginal distributions without information about the joint occurrence of the spectral values at different periods. In order to build new prediction models for the two equivalent velocities, a large set of ground motion records is used to calculate the correlation coefficients between the response spectral values corresponding to different periods and components of the ground motion. Then, functional forms adopted in models from the literature are calibrated to fit the obtained data. A new functional form is proposed to improve the predictions of the considered models from the literature. The components of the ground motion considered in this study are the two horizontal ones only. Potential uses of the proposed equations in addition to the prediction of the correlation coefficients of the equivalent velocity spectral values are shown, such as the prediction of derived intensity measures and the development of conditional mean spectra.
