Shading Effect of Different Colored Polyethylene net on Seeding Growth of Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer

  • This study was carried out to investigate spectral irradiance characteristics of blue, yellow, and blue-black colored polyethylene (PE) shading net and the effect on growth characteristics and yield in ginseng seedling. The spectral irradiance $({\mu}mol/m^2/s/nm)$ showed the peak at 498 nm in both of blue and blue-black PE shading net, and 606 nm under yellow PE one. The intensity of blue light in blue shading was more strong than that of blue-black shading, control. Blue shading was increased by 17% and 23% in accumulated quantum for daytime, $0.5^{\circ}C and $0.2^{\circ}C$ in maximum temperature on June 2 than that of yellow and blue-black shading, respectively, but heat injury ratio of the former was lower than that of the latter. Chlorophyll content and stem length in blue shading were decreased more significantly than those of yellow and blue-black shading. The specific leaf weight was higher under blue and yellow shading than that of blue-black shading. Ginseng seedling harvested in blue shading was increased by $13{\sim}17%$ in the number of root, and $17{\sim}20%$ in root weight per $m^ 2 compared to yellow and blue-black shading owing to the increase of survived plant, and the decrease of specific leaf weight, heat injury ratio, and stem length.

순천시 생활쓰레기의 계절별 조성 및 물리·화학적 특성에 관한 연구 (A study on the physico-chemical characteristics of municipal solid wastes generated in the sunchon city)

  • 쓰레기의 효과적인 처리방안을 제시하고 장래 대책을 수립하는데 자료로 활용하도록 하기 위해서 순천시 생활쓰레기의 물리 화학적 특성을 조사하였다. 발생 쓰레기의 계절별, 성상별 특성을 조사 분석하여 다음의 결과를 얻었다. 생활쓰레기의 겉보기밀도는 가연성쓰레기가 $219kg/m^3$, 비가연성쓰레기는 $391kg/m^3$로 나타났다. 가연성쓰레기 중에서 음식물쓰레기의 습윤질량 중량비 가중평균은 38.1%를 차지하였으며, 음식물쓰레기를 제외한 가연성쓰레기는 49.6%를 나타내었다. 음식물쓰레기를 제외한 가연성쓰레기의 수분함량, 가연분함량 및 회분함량의 가중평균은 각각 16.9%, 68.1% 및 15.0%로 나타나 소각처리의 특성이 양호하게 나타났다. 음식물쓰레기를 제외한 가연성쓰레기의 저위발열량은 2,962kcal/kg로 나타나 소각처리의 특성이 아주 양호하게 나타났다.

FRP 기계적 물성을 고려한 복합소재 선체구조 적층판 경량화 설계 (Laminate Weight Optimization of Composite Ship Structures based on Experimental Data)

  • The study aims to improve the previous theory-based algorithm on the lightweight design of laminate structures of a composite ship based on the mechanical properties of fiber, resin, and laminates obtained from experiments. From a case study on using a hydrometer to measure the specific gravity of e-glass fiber woven roving fabric/polyester resin used as the raw material for the hull of a 52 ft composite ship, the equation for calculating the weight of laminate was redefined, and the relationship between decreasing mechanical properties and increasing glass content was determined from the results of material testing according to ASTM D5083 and ASTM D790. After applying these experimental data to the existing algorithm and improving it, a possible laminate design that maximizes the specific strength of the composite material was confirmed. In a case study that applied the existing algorithm based on rules, the optimal lightweight design of composite structures was achieved when the weight fraction of e-glass fiber was increased by 57.5% compared with that in the original design, but the improved algorithm allowed for an increase of only 17.5%.

배합사료 및 습사료 공급에 따른 넙치(Paralichthys olivaceus)의 성장 및 어체성분 비교 (Comparison of Extruded and Moist Pellets for Whole-body Proximate Composition and Growth Performance of Olive Flounder Paralichthys olivaceus)

  • Two consecutive feeding trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of extruded pellet (EP) and raw fish-based moist pellet (MP) in the juvenile (experiment I) and sub-adult (experiment II) stages of olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. The fish were distributed randomly to three aquarium tanks, as a group of 1,200 fish (initial mean weight $13.5{\pm}1.76g$) in experiment I, and as a group of 390 fish (initial mean weight $385{\pm}15.3g$) in experiment II. In experiment I, the weight gain, specific growth rate, feed efficiency, protein efficiency ratio, and survival of fish fed EP were all significantly higher than those of fish fed MP. In experiment II, no significant differences were observed in weight gain, specific growth rate and survival between the EP and MP groups. However, the feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratios of fish fed EP were significantly higher than those of fish fed MP. The results of this study indicate that EP could be developed to replace MP for market size production of olive flounder without any adverse effects on the growth performance. The dietary formulation used in this study could be used as an appropriate feed for olive flounder.

대사공학기술을 이용한 기능성 carotenoids 고 생산 감자의 개발 현황 (Development of transgenic potato with high content of functional carotenoids by using metabolic engineering)

  • 감자의 괴경에 비타민 A의 전구물질인 베타 카로텐 또는 항산화활성이 높으나 일반식물에서는 합성되지 않는 astaxanthin과 같은 케토형 카로티노이드의 집적을 위한 연구가 최근 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 현재까지의 연구 결과를 요약하여 보면 $\beta$-carotene의 함량이 $47\;{\mu}g/g$ dry weight으로 대조구에 비하여 3,600배 까지 증가한 결과가 보고되었다. 또한, 해양 미생물로부터 분리한 $\beta$-carotene ketolase 유전자를 도입한 감자의 괴경에서 astaxanthin 등의 케토형 카로티노이드의 함량이 최고 $14\;{\mu}g/g$ dry weight 까지 증가하여 감자의 색깔이 붉은 색으로 변하였다고 보고하였다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 이들 형질전환 감자의 생산을 위하여 도입한 유전자의 종류, 대사공학적 전략, 문제점 및 향후 연구 방향 등에 관하여 논하고자 하였다.

대구지역 주부들의 비만정도에 따른 식행동 특성과 영양섭취 실태 평가 (Dietary Behaviors and Status of Nutrient Intakes by the Obesity Levels of Housewives in Daegu)

  • This study was intended to collect the baseline information on dietary behavior of adults to develop nutrition education program in the context of healthy weights at community level. Nutrient intakes of 128 housewives were assessed by 24 hour recall method. Also food habits, nutrition knowledge and attitude were investigated by self-administered questionnaires. Subjects were divided to under-weight, normal-weight, over-weight groups by body mass index (BMI). Most under-weight groups evaluated as their current body images were normal. $41\%$ of normal-weight groups judged as their current body images were obese. Energy and fat intakes of over-weight group were significantly higher than that of under-weight and normal weight groups (p<0.05). However, carbohydrate and protein intakes showed no significant differences among the three groups. It appeared that active attitude toward change in nutrition attitude of normal weight group was significantly higher than that of under-weight group (p<0.05). There were no significant differences of food habit score, nutrition knowledge, and obesity habit scores among the three groups. The frequency of eating-out showed significant difference among three groups (p<0.05). Food habit scores were positively related to health-concerned attitude (r=0.174), convenience-concerned attitude (r=0.229) and food enjoyed attitude (0.213) and negatively related to obesity habit score (r=-0.206). Also, positive correlation of body fat mass with frequency of eatingout (r=0.213), instant food (r=0.227) and amount of meal (r=0.187) existed (p<0.05). We concluded that nutrition education programs for housewives should include specific strategies to modify unsound food behaviors and inappropriate perception of body image for a healthy weight.

Taxonomy of Preys in Natural Young Tarpon, Megalops atlanticus

  • Predater, tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) has a specific preferring preys in natural environments. To investigate this, young tarpon were captured and their stomach contents were weighed and sorted based on taxonomic groups. Average standard length and body weight for tarpon captured were 11.49 cm and 34.67 g, respectively. The average weight of the stomach contents in the tarpon was 0.83 g. The status of digestion extent of the consumed preys was 2.37 which indicated that preys were relatively well digested. The main preys in tarpon stomach were other fishes (mosquito fish and sheepshead minnow) and shrimp. Frequency occurrence of fishes in tarpon stomach was highest (P<0.05). Also, frequency occurrence of shrimp was higher than that of fly (P<0.05). Mean individual number of fish found in tarpon stomach was 2.66 per tarpon and it was higher than that of shrimp or fly (P<0.05). There was linear regression between the total weight of the consumed preys and the standard length of tarpon; Y (Total weight of preys) = 0.3151 $\times$ (Standard length of tarpon) - 2.7123, $R^2$=0.6140. Also, there was the strong linear regression between the total weight of the consumed preys and weight of the tarpon; Y (Total weight of preys) = 0.0299 $\times$ (Body weight of tarpon) - 0.0774, $R^2$=0.7882. These results indicated that the main preys for young tarpon in their natural environments were small fish composed of mosquito fish and sheepshead minnow and shrimp. And there was the stronger correlation between the total weight of preys and the body weight of tarpon than that between the total weight of preys and the standard length of tarpon.

Validation of self-reported height and weight in fifth-grade Korean children

  • Height and weight are important indicators to calculate Body Mass Index (BMI); measuring height and weight directly is the most exact method to get this information. However, it is ineffective in terms of cost and time on large population samples. The aim of our study was to investigate the validity of self-reported height and weight data compared to our measured data in Korean children to predict obese status. Four hundred twenty-two fifth-grade (mean age $10.5{\pm}0.5$ years) children who had self-reported and measured height and weight data were final subjects for this study. Overweight/obese was defined as a BMI of or above the 85th percentile of the gender-specific BMI for age in the 2007 Korean National Growth Charts or a BMI of 25 or higher (underweight : < 5th, normal : ${\geq}5th$ to < 85th, overweight : ${\geq}85th$ to < 95th). The differences between self-reported and measured data were tested using paired t-test. Differences based on overweight/obese status were tested using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and linear trends. Pearson's correlation and Cohen's kappa were tested to examine agreements between the self-reported and measured data. Although measured and self-reported height, weight and BMI were significantly different and children tended to overreport their height and underreport their weight, the correlation between the two methods of height, weight and BMI were high (r = 0.956, 0.969, 0.932, respectively; all P < 0.001), and both genders reported their overweight/non-overweight status accurately (Cohen's kappa = 0.792, P < 0.001). Although there were differences between the self-reported and our measured methods, the self-reported weight and height was valid enough to classify overweight/obesity status correctly, especially in non-overweight/obese children. Due to bigger underestimation of weight and overestimation of height in obese children, however, we need to be aware that the self-reported anthropometric data were less accurate in overweight/obese children than in non-overweight/obese children.

이사회의 독립성이 기업성과에 미치는 영향 : CEO의 기업 내 경력과의 상호작용효과에 대한 연구 (Effect of Board Independence on Performance: Interaction Effect with CEO's Firm Specific Experience)

  • This paper examines the direct effects of board independence and also its interaction effects with CEO's firm specific experience on firm performance. The findings in an hierarchial regression analysis of multiyear sample of computer hardware companies indicate that independent, outsider directors are beneficial to firms' performance when CEO has high-level of firm specific experience whereas it is harmful when CEO has low-level of firm specific experience. However, separating the positions of board chair and chief executive officer that has been used as another means for increasing board independence does not influence to firms' performance. These findings imply that researchers in corporate governance should reconsider the relative weight placed on directors' monitoring and assistance role. Rather than focusing predominantly on directors' willingness or ability to control executives, in future research scholars should yield more productive results by focusing on the assistance directors provide in bringing valued resources to the CEOs and in serving as a source of advice and counsel especially for CEO's improvement of management technique. In addition, they should pay more attention on identifying intervening processes between board and firm performance in order to provide optimal governance mechanisms and configurations to practitioners.

엘리트 보디빌더와 역도선수의 영양 보조물(nutritional ergogenic aids) 섭취 실제 (Practices of Nutritional Ergogenic Aids Usage by Elite Bodybuilders and Weight Lifters)

  • The objective of the present study was to determine the prevalence and type of nutritional ergogenic aids use, and to determine the frequency, reasons for use of nutritional ergogenic aids. Thirty-four male bodybuilders (mean age = 27.0 years), twenty-four male weight lifters (mean age = 20.9 years) participated in the study. Participants completed a comprehensive survey detailing their usage patterns. In this study, 78.1% of bodybuilders and 79.2% of weight lifters reported using nutritional ergogenic aids. The most frequently taken nutritional ergogenic aids, in ranking order, were protein/amino acid powders (79.4%), multivitamin/minerals (67.7%) and creatine (67.6%) for bodybuilders, in contrast to sports drinks (100.0%), protein/amino acid powders (50.5%) and creatine (50.5%) for weight lifters. Over the half of the respondents, 79.4% of bodybuilders and 50.6% of weight lifters, used protein/amino acid powders to gain muscle mass and to stay healthy. Bodybuilders, 67.6% and weight lifters, 41.7%, used multivitamin/minerals to stay healthy and for energy. The intakes of most vitamin and minerals through diet and nutritional ergogenic aids were much greater than RDA. Vitamin $B_1$, vitamin $B_2$, niacin, vitamin $B_6$ and folate intakes were ranged at 400-900%. Vitamin C intake was 1285.4% (for bodybuilders) and 1322.6% (for weight lifters). The correct answer rate of nutritional ergogenic aids was 46.0% for bodybuilders and 52.0% for weight lifters. Both bodybuilders and weight lifters took highly nutritional ergogenic aids and it tended to be taken irrespective of scientific background. Specific sport nutrition education applicable to athletes, especially strength athletes, is recommended. The findings of this investigation could be used to enable the professionals (sports dietician and physician) to identity common misconceptions regarding nutritional ergogenic aids and to implement educational programs.
