  • Surf-zone fishes in Daechon Beach, situated at the mouth of Cheonsu Bay, Korea, were collected by a beach seine during the spring and neap tides in August 1999. Short-term variation in species composition was analyzed based on tidal range, tidal level, and time of day. Of 24 species identified, juvenile pelagic fishes predominated in the number of individuals captured. Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed that the number of individuals was significantly higher during the spring tide than during the neap tide. During the spring tide the fishes were more abundant at the low level than at the high level, while during the neap tide there was no significant difference. The mean density of pelagic fishes did not show significant differences between high and low tides. Demersal fishes were caught mainly in the water below the low level of the neap tide.

  • Fish community study by a gill net in four coastal waters of Southern Sea, Korea were simultaneously conducted to determine seasonal variation of species composition and abundance from March to November, 2006. A total of 68 species and 577,422.9 g by four study waters were caught during the survey period. The dominant species were Platycephalus indicus, Mugil cephalus, Cynoglossus robustus and Argyrosomus argentatus of 58.2% in total catch and they occupied 63.1% in IRD (index of relative distribution). By regional community, fishes that compromised 18 species and 53,148.8 g in Tongyeong Donam were caught and the dominant species were Platycephalus indicus, Hexagrammos otakii, Liparis tessellatus, Paralichthys olivaceus. In Yeosu Gyedong, fishes of 44species and 123,926.9 g were caught and the dominant species were Platycephalus indicus, Muraenesox cinereus. In Jangheung Sumoon, fishes of 44 species and 123,926.9 g were caught and the dominant species were Mugil cephalus, Platycephalus indicus, Cynoglossus robustus, Liparis tessellatus. And in Jindo Modo, fishes of 32 species and 171,426.3 g were caught and the dominant species were Platycephalus indicus, Argyrosomus argentatus, Cynoglossus robustus. Therefore, the species composition and abundance of fish by region were very different. These results seem to be related to differences of regional environmental condition, productivity, and fish ecological habits. And the fish catch in four study waters were high from April to July, and the number of fish species and diversity index had a tendency to increased from March to November. The ranges of environmental factors caught fish were $8.3{\sim}28.5^{\circ}C$ in temperature, 26.59~34.92 in salinity and also these factors were correlated to seasonal variation of fish.

  • The fluctuation in the abundance and species composition of fish was investigated using a fyke net with entrances on both sides in the coastal waters of Geumo-do, Yeosu, Chollanam-do, Korea, from May 2003 to April 2004. A total of 2,379 fishes (392.13 kg) were sampled and classified into 11 orders, 34 families, and 53 species. The dominant orders were Perciformes, Scorpaeniformes, and Pleuronectiformes, which accounted for 67.9% of the collected fishes. The dominant species was Acanthopagrus schlegelii (235 individuals, 19.00 kg), followed by Konosirus punctatus (182 individuals, 9.53 kg), and Apogon lineatus (161 individuals, 1.69 kg). The number of individuals and biomass were higher in spring and summer than in winter, and the monthly variation may be related to the water temperature. The diversity index was highest in September (H'=2.9) and lowest in December (H'=1.8). The evenness index was highest in August (J=0.9) and lowest in December (J=0.7). The dominance index was highest in December (D=0.7) and lowest in August (D=0.2). The economically important species in this area are Acanthopagrus schlegelii, Konosirus punctatus, Lateolabrax maculatus, Argyrosomus argentatus, Trichiurus lepturus, Lateolabrax japonicus, and Sebastes schlegelii.

  • To investigate seasonal and yearly variation of fishes composition in Yeoja Bay of Korea, fisheries survey were carried out using beam trawl from 2006 to 2009. A total of 44 fish species were collected. The major dominant species were Pennahia argentatus, Thryssa adelae, Thryssa kammalensis and Cynoglossus joyneri, which were occupied over 63% total individuals, and 50% of wet weight. The diversity index (H') was about 1.62 (1.46~1.77) by seasons, and seasons of similarity by fishes were divided into two groups, which were March with December and June with September. ANOVA test showed that there were not significant difference between individuals and catch weight (kg) per unit area (km$^2$) by year and season, except for catch weight per unit area by season.

  • Species composition and seasonal variations in abundance of fishes in the Nakdong River estuary were investigated using an otter trawl seasonally from September 2001 to July 2002. These data were compared with those obtained before the construction of the estuary barrage in 1987. A total of 3,648 fishes that comprised 30 species in 21 families were collected. Acanthogobius flavimanus and Leiognathus nuchalis predominated, and they were responsible for $71.2\%\;and\;67.8\%$ in the number of individuals and biomass, respectively. The next abundant fish species were Platycephalus indicus and Liparis tanakai. Compared with data obtained before the construction of the estuary barrage in 1987, abundances of Acanthogobius flavimanus, Platycephajus indicus, Liparis tanakai, Tridentiger trigonocephalus and Lateolabrax japonicus increased, while those of Pholis fangi, Repomucenus valenciennei, Sardineila zunasi and Scomber japonicus decreased. These results seems to be related to change of sediment environment caused by irregular discharge of freshwater with variation of sea water movement in the Nakdong River estuary.

  • A total of 64 fish species was collected by an otter trawl in the coastal water off Namhae Island from May 1989 to April 1990. The dominant species were Acentrogobius pflaumii, Chaeturichthys hexanema, Chaeturichthys sciistius, Thryssa kammalensis, and Repomucenus valenciennei which accounted for approximately 66.5% of the total numbers and 34.5% of biomass of fish collected. Fish collected in the study area were primarily small fish species or early juverniles of large fish species. Only about 15%, exceeded 10cm in standard length. Seasonal variations in both species composition and abundance of fishes were major characteristics in the study area. The peak abundance occurred in April and September, while the number of species was relatively high from October to January. However, both the number of species and abundance of fishes showed the lowest values in winter.

  • This study was investigated the species composition of demersal fishes by a bottom trawler GAYA, in order to be used basic data for resources management of fishery in the jointly controlled waters of the West sea. We caught 39 species, 5,532 individuals and 322.518kg in biomass. The number of species was the fewest of the jointly controlled waters of the East china sea and boundary zone between Busan and Tsushima. The first dominant species in individuals in summer was Oregonia gracilis, and in biomass was angler. But angler was the first dominant species in 7 stations of 12 stations. It was a peculiar phenomenon that cod which lives in a cold current was caught in the northern part of the West sea. In this connection it seems to be needs for oceanographic research. Catch per unit effort (kg/hr) of bottom trawl was the higher in northern part and in right line of all surveyed area respectively.

  • Authors investigated the species composition of fishes for about 13months in the boundary sea water between Busan and Tsushima. We caught 81 species, 1,603 individuals and 437.7kg in biomass. The first dominant species by seasons were common squid, angler, angler and Psenopsis anomala respectively. Angler was also the first dominant species in biomass for four seasons. Catch per unit effort (kg/hr) was the highest in winter and the lowest in summer. But there was a little difference in accordance with station compared with season. There was big difference by season in the diversity index, the evenness index and the dominant index. But there was little difference between above indexes. The total length of common squid was the tallest in autumn and winter, that of blackthroat seaperch was the tallest in autumn and the lowest in winter. But angler's total length was almost same all through the year.
