  • Manufacturing and technology industries produce large amounts of air pollutants. Ulsan Metropolitan City, South Korea, is well-known for its large industrial complexes; in particular, the concentration of $SO_2$ here is the highest in the country. We assessed $SO_2$ monitoring sites based on conditional and joint entropy, because this is a common method for determining an optimal air monitoring network. Monthly $SO_2$ concentrations from 12 air monitoring sites were collected, and the distribution of spatial locations was determined by kriging. Mean absolute error, Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), bias and correlation coefficients were employed to evaluate the considered algorithms. An optimal air monitoring network for Ulsan was suggested based on the improvement of RMSE.

  • Impervious surfaces are important indicators for urban development monitoring. Accurate mapping of urban impervious surfaces with observational satellites, such as VNREDSat-1, remains challenging due to the spectral diversity not captured by an individual PAN image. In this article, five multi-resolution image fusion techniques were compared for the task of classifting urban impervious surfaces. The result shows that for VNREDSat-1 dataset, UNB and Wavelet tranformation methods are the best techniques in reserving spatial and spectral information of original MS image, respectively. However, the UNB technique gives the best results when it comes to impervious surface classification, especially in the case of shadow areas included in non-impervious surface group.

  • Remote sensing cannot provide a direct measurement of vegetation index (VI) but it can provide a reasonably good estimate of vegetation index, defined as the ratio of satellite bands. The monitoring of vegetation in nearby urban regions is made difficult by the low spatial resolution and temporal resolution image captures. In this study, enhancing spatial resolution method is adapted as to improve a low spatial resolution. Recent studies have successfully estimated normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) using improved resolution method such as from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard EOS Terra satellite. Image enhancing spatial resolution is an important tool in remote sensing, as many Earth observation satellites provide both high-resolution and low-resolution multi-spectral images. Examples of enhancement of a MODIS multi-spectral image and a MODIS NDVI image of Cheongju using a Landsat TM high-resolution multi-spectral image are presented. The results are compared with that of the IHS technique is presented for enhancing spatial resolution of multi-spectral bands using a higher resolution data set. To provide a continuous monitoring capability for NDVI, in situ measurements of NDVI from paddy field was carried out in 2004 for comparison with remotely sensed MODIS data. We compare and discuss NDVI estimates from MODIS sensors and in-situ spectroradiometer data over Ochang plain region. These results indicate that the MODIS NDVI is underestimated by approximately 50%.

  • Global interests for construction of 3 dimensional spatial information has risen due to development of measurement sensors and data processing technologies. In spite of criticism for the violation of personal privacy, CCTV cameras equipped in outdoor public space of urban area are used as a fundamental sensor for traffic management, crime prevention or hazard monitoring. For safety guarantee in urban environment and disaster prevention, a surveillance system integrating pre-constructed 3 dimensional spatial information with CCTV data or video sequence is needed for monitoring and observing emergent situation interactively in real time. In this study, we proposed applicability of the prototype system for web visualization based on X3D, an international standard of real time web visualization, by integrating 3 dimensional spatial information with video sequence.

  • The uses of multi-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality models are increasing to support a sustainable management of large dam reservoirs in Korea. Any modeling study requires selection of a proper spatial dimension of the model based on the characteristics of spatial variability of concerned simulation variables. For example, a laterally averaged two-dimensional (2D) model, which has been widely used in many large dam reservoirs in Korea, assumes that the lateral variations of hydrodynamic and water quality variables are negligible. However, there has been limited studies to give a justification of the assumption. The objectives of this study were to present the characteristics of spatial variations of water quality variables through intensive field monitoring in Daechung Reservoir, and provide information on a proper spatial dimension for different water quality parameters. The monitoring results showed that the lateral variations of water temperature are marginal, but those of DO, pH, and conductivity could be significant depending on the hydrological conditions and local algal biomass. In particular, the phytoplankton (Chl-a) and nutrient concentrations showed a significant lateral variation at R2 (Daejeongri) during low flow periods in 2008 possibly because of slow lateral mixing of tributary inflow from So-oak Stream and wind driven patchiness.

  • Active fire monitoring using high-resolution drone images and deep learning technologies is now an initial stage and requires various approaches for research and development. This letter examined the detection of active fire objects using You Look Only Once Version 7 (YOLOv7), a state-of-the-art (SOTA) model that has rarely been used in fire detection with drone images. Our experiments showed a better performance than the previous works in terms of multiple quantitative measures. The proposed method can be applied to continuous monitoring of wide areas, with an integration of additional development of new technologies.

  • The main purpose of this presented investigation is to build up the BHMS based on GNSS. This proposed monitoring system can conduct the deflection and dynamic characteristics analysis by using only GNSS positioning solution. The general bridge monitoring system being operated recently is composed of a combination of various sensors that are able to conduct deflection monitoring and dynamic characteristics monitoring analysis at the same time. However, GNSS based BHMS has the unique procedure in terms of data analysis. In the other words, GNSS positioning solution is firstly applied to deflection monitoring analysis then, this deflection analysis can be sequentially reflected in the dynamic characteristics. Unfortunately, the adjustment result of GNSS positioning solution estimated through various options and conditions and the process of monitoring analysis has not been fulfilled systematically. This means that different results or analysis value are presented according to the methodology and officers. Most of researches have been focusing on deflection monitoring analysis and some investigation regarding to dynamic characteristics is recently introduced. Moreover, it is not still reported the systematic investigation with regards to proper filtering and analysis methodology. This study was carried out based on a large amount of data, from this, various variables not reported yet are actively considered. Therefore, specific software for both monitoring analysis have been developed.

  • Recent climate fluctuation and environmental change at global scale are causing more incidences of disasters and calamities over the world. In a response to this environmental crisis, international collaboration for Earth Observation(EO) is obtaining more significance in order to understand, watch, and forecast changes in the earth system. As such, aerial monitoring based on remotely sensed data, indispensable for EO, is also drawing more attentions. In this context, we discuss diverse aspects of future developments in the Korean domestic system for aerial monitoring. This paper first thoroughly examines current status of national and international collaboration system arid research of aerial monitoring. It then suggests specific development plans for four critical dimensions such as research, organization, institutional systems, and strategies. Our study would facilitate systematically establishing policies for aerial monitoring in Korea and creating a domestic GEOSS(Global Earth Observation System of Systems) in the near future.

  • In this research, it is a basic study to investigate the population of birds using UAVs. The research area is Ardeidae species(ASP) habitat and has long-term monitoring. The purpose of the study is to compare the ASP populations which analyzed ground observational survey and UAVs imagery. We used DJI's Mavic pro and Phantom4 for this research. Before investigating the population of ASP, we measured the escape distance by the UAVs, and the escape distances of the two UAVs models were statistically significant. Such a result would be different in UAV size and rotor(rotary wing) noise. The population of ASP who analyzed the ground observation and UAVs imagery count differed greatly. In detail, the population(mean) on the ground observation was 174.9, and the UAVs was 247.1 ~ 249.9. As a result of analyzing the UAVs imagery, These results indicate that the lower the UAVs camera altitude, the higher the ASP population, and the lower the UAVs camera altitude, the higher the resolution of the images and the better the reading of the individual of ASP. And we confirmed analyzed images taken at various altitudes, the individuals of ASP was not statistically significant. This is because the resolution of the phantom was superior to that of mavic pro. Our research is fundamental compared to similar studies. However, long-term monitoring for ASP of South Korea's by ground observation is a barrier of the reliability of the monitoring result. We suggested how to use UAVs which can improve long-term monitoring for ASP habitat.
