  • In contemporary times, "environmental designers" need to consider both exterior and interior aspects because of the growing trend in dissolution between exterior and interior spaces. To quantify "spatial sense" which serves as the standard for environmental design, this study has asked 63 subjects to evaluate 15 interior and 14 exterior spaces. The "spaciousness (small-large)", "openness(closed-open)", "warmness(warm-cold)", "brightness(bright-dark)", "softness(soft-hard)", "spatial intimacy" and "frequency of visit" were adopted as variables of spatial sense. Through the analysis of these variables, this study could gain the difference between spatial sense for exterior and interior environments, quantify the spatial sense that physically and psychologically appropriates to human beings. The result of this study can be summarized as follows: Twice the amount of spaciousness was observed between the interior and exterior spaces. And the standard on intimate space is established with W/H ratio of 5.71 and high Window/Wall Area ratio in the interior and an area of 3,800m2 and a W/H ratio of 5.57 in exterior. The difference between the spatial sense in the interior and exterior space is mostly dependent on the psychological sense. The increase of physical size caused by the interior space to be perceived as cold, dark and hard psychologically, but exterior space to be perceived as warm, bright and soft. Psychological senses, especially softness, affect spatial intimacy to the greatest extent among the given variables. As the psychological senses for interior spaces were largely independent from the given space's size and perceptive senses, the size of the interior space, which exhibited spatial intimacy, could not be deduced. In comparison to this, due to the high dependency between the psychological senses for exterior spaces and the given space's size and perceptive senses. The study also showed that interior and exterior spaces have relatively different spatial sense and physical standards. Such research results are predicted to provide applicable standards for environmental designers for exterior and interior spaces in the future.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the change of perception and to measure the degree of interaction between the lighting and the finishing materials according to preference types and the impacted factors to the spatial sensitivity of users. To do that, the this change was grasped through the experiment with Likert Scale and ANOVA of SPSS program to the simulated images. The result of this study is as following. Firstly, the personal difference in the perception of space comes from 'attention' in information processing process. The degree of the perception of users change strongly by lighting in the space expressed the 'modern natural'. Secondly, the atmosphere and the degree of perception are different in the preference of users to the spatial sensitivity and in impacted factors which are thought by users in the space sensitives. The users who prefer the 'decoration' feel the mood more strongly in the space. But the users who prefer the 'active' and 'intimacy' are opposite to that. The difference to the degree of perception is greater in the 'classic natural' than the others under the lighting turns on. Thirdly, an in-depth research which is considered of the interaction among the various factors is needed for finding the design methods for inducing the sensitivity of users in the space. And the ranking of the impacted factors should be understanded and applied to the research regarding the changes of perception in the space. Finally, this study has the limitation to be adapted to all of the situation for the space design methods. But this will be a basic data to study the design methods for users's sensitivity in the space.

  • Since Adolf Loos' Ornament and Crime was released, ornament had been regarded as a vice in Modern architecture. In Post Modern architecture, the ornamental vocabularies extracted from the classical architecture have been symbolically expressed. As a result, the significance of existence of and the use value of architecture have increased with improved intimacy to the public. However, many studies that have analyzed architecture in terms of semantics and semiotics focusing on communication between architecture and the public have admitted instability in architectural meaning because of the fundamental difference between architecture and language. At the same time, the architectural representation has encountered a lot of limitations along with the deconstruction and non-presentation theory in Post-Structuralism. Even under these circumstances, the ornamental representation can be a critical factor which makes communication possible while expressing spatial identity in this pluralistic contemporary society. Hence, this paper has established logical grounds for research based on theoretical investigation on the concept of representation, semiotics, and ornamental representation, with regard to spatial communication through ornamental representation in commercial space. Based on Peirce's Semiotics which is the typical theoretical science in terms of representation, this paper has analyzed the three kinds of signs (Icon, Index and Symbol) that he proposed. Peirce's classification of signs becomes ideal when the factors are well balanced, with room for combination instead of strict classification. It appears that his theory of signs would be useful in understanding and analyzing ornamental representation. This study on representational ornament could offer a plan for ideal communication and abundant spatial experience in the interior design of commercial space in which the expression of creative space identity is required.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate user satisfaction with village bathhouses, selected from a two-year pilot project of common facilities for seniors in rural areas from 2014 to 2015. A survey was conducted using a questionnaire to evaluate user satisfaction, and 96 questionnaires were collected from 10 village bathhouses. User satisfaction was evaluated in five categories with a five-point scale: location and spatial composition; emotions and intimacy; safety; hygiene and equipment; and maintenance and management. The results are as follows. First, scores on hygiene and equipment stood at four points or higher, indicating higher user satisfaction. However, scores on the other four categories were below four points. But when overall user satisfaction was evaluated on a five-point scale, the average score stood at 4.13out of five points and 89.5 out of 100 points. These findings suggest that users were generally satisfied with the bathhouses. Second, a comparison of bathing patterns from before and after bathhouse construction in villages revealed that 42.7% of residents had previously gone to neighboring villages to bathe. Local bathhouse construction led to an increase in overall bathing frequency, exerting a beneficial effect on hygiene. Third, general user satisfaction correlated more closely with items related to location and spatial composition than items of other categories, indicating that the architectural elements of the bathhouses have a major impact. Finally, access to a bathhouse at all times showed strong correlation with satisfaction levels, suggesting a need for the establishment of more bathhouses throughout rural areas.

  • The objective of this study is to classify the characteristics of green landscapes in suburban cities and identify methods for managing them. The study site is Matsudo city in the outskirts of Tokyo, Japan. All the greenery in Matsudo was categorized into different landscape patterns using spatial analysis and field surveys. Afterwards, assessments of green landscapes were conducted using questionnaire surveys and factor analyses. There are a variety of green landscapes in Matsudo, formed by a number of different reasons such as urban planning, topographical characters and socio-cultural environments. Twenty different green landscape patterns were identified in Matsudo. The survey concluded that green landscape patterns of parks and rivers in Urbanization Control Areas are more attractive than patterns of farmland or forest in residential areas. Three major factors influenced perceptions: legibility, intimacy and the locality on the landscape assessment. Urban farmland and urban forest are two characteristics of suburban cities, and these green landscapes relate to intimacy or localities in a regional image. Finally, based on the results of this study, some implications were discussed for a green master plan and green landscape management.

  • The purpose of this thesis is to suggest objective basic data for the environmental design through the quantitative analysis of the visual quality included in the physical environment of forest landscape. For this, landscape values of forest landscape have been evaluated by using the Iverson method, the images structure of forest landscape's main utilizing space have been analysed by the factor analysis algorithm, degree of visual preferences have been pleasured mainly by questionnaries and SBE method, and finally these thesis can be summarized as fallow LCP with high values of Iverson factors I and IV yield high landscape value. Specifically, Iverson factor IV has been found to play the dominant. For all experimental points, significant seasonal variations in S.D. scale values have been observed. In natural parks, where artificial structures are complementary to the natural landscape, main factors of image are S.D. scales such as the visual sequence, the formal simplicity of structures, the emphasis, the unification of heterogeneous factors and the assimilation. Factors covering the spatial image of natural parks have been found to be the overall evaluation, the individual characteristics, the tidiness, the potentiality, the dignity, the intimacy and the space volume. For all seasons, factors such as the individual characteristics, the dignity, the tidiness, the potentiality, yield high factor scores. As for factors determining the degree of visual preference, variables such as the summit, the skyline, rocks, the water and the degree of natural destruction by artificial structures yield high values for all seasons.
