Spatialization of Unstructured Document Information Using AI (AI를 활용한 비정형 문서정보의 공간정보화)

  • Spatial information is essential for interpreting urban phenomena. Methodologies for spatializing urban information, especially when it lacks location details, have been consistently developed. Typical methods include Geocoding using structured address information or place names, spatial integration with existing geospatial data, and manual tasks utilizing reference data. However, a vast number of documents produced by administrative agencies have not been deeply dealt with due to their unstructured nature, even when there's demand for spatialization. This research utilizes the natural language processing model BERT to spatialize public documents related to urban planning. It focuses on extracting sentence elements containing addresses from documents and converting them into structured data. The study used 18 years of urban planning public announcement documents as training data to train the BERT model and enhanced its performance by manually adjusting its hyperparameters. After training, the test results showed accuracy rates of 96.6% for classifying urban planning facilities, 98.5% for address recognition, and 93.1% for address cleaning. When mapping the result data on GIS, it was possible to effectively display the change history related to specific urban planning facilities. This research provides a deep understanding of the spatial context of urban planning documents, and it is hoped that through this, stakeholders can make more effective decisions.

The Analysis of Image by Cognitive Map of residents in apartment housing (집합주거단지 거주자의 인지도에 따른 이미지 분석)

  • Each of us has personal and unique "Mental Images" of environment that are the results of a two-way process between an observer and his environment. By understanding of people's image on their physical settings through cognitive maps, congruent with their design environment. In this context, this study is to fine out the characteristics of the resident's image in apartment housing that are modern housing. This paper is theoretically based on Appleyard's cognitive maps types, Lynch's the components of image, Harrison and Howard's image enhancing factors and Applyard's image enhancing factors of buildings. For the purpose of this study, two-instruments were used. One was sketch mapping, that told of visual aspects of cognitive map. Another was verbal questionnaire, which was composed of nonvisual aspects of image components and image enhancing factors. For the methods of research analysis, Percentage, Frequency, and Chi-square test were used. The results of this study are as follows. Firstly, as for the types of cognitive maps, the rate of sequential maps and spatial maps are nearly same. Secondly, as for the components of images, landmarks and districts are significant elements in apartment housing, and edges, nodes and paths are rare element. Thirdly, with regard to image enhancing factors, landscaping is shown to be most effective at landmarks and districts. And finally, in examing the differences of images between various social groups, significant variables are years of living and housing size. Age and income are the next. In this study of image, we can learn about manner in which individuals come to see, understand, and cope with the environment at a personal level. So, user-oriented approach is useful in environmental design, and particularly, it is useful in the apartment housing of the future life space.

A Study on Feature Classification and Data Dictionary of Digital Map (수치지도 지형지물 분류체계 개선 및 자료사전에 관한 연구)

  • Toward the systematic and efficient management of national land, National Geography Institute(NGI, National mapping agency) has been producing national basemap in automated process since middle of 1980's. Under the National Geographic Information System(NGIS) Development Plan, NGI began to produce digital maps in the scales of 1:1,000, 1:5,000, 1:25,000 since 1995. However, those of digital maps that have been generated under NGIS Development Plan need to be modified and corrected due to lack of technology and experience in making digital maps. In this context, those digital maps generated are currently in great need for improving the data dictionary. It is fully appreciated in previous research that data dictionary will be a key element far users and generators of digital maps to rectify the existing problems in digital maps as well as to maximize the application of digital maps. In this paper, we analyzed existing problems in digital maps based on previous researches and interviews with engineers in different fields of geospatial engineering. And then, the existing data dictionary has been redefined and modified. In the line of modification process, a relational matrix was established fur each topographic feature defined in the existing feature classification system. This paper presents newly proposed data dictionary which conforms to newly defined feature classification system from previous research performed by NGI.

The Production of Riskscapes in the Korean Developmental State: A Perspective from East Asia (동아시아 맥락에서 바라본 한국에서의 위험경관의 생산)

  • The concept of a risk society, which was originally suggested by German sociologist Ulrich Beck, is insufficient to reveal how a certain risk materially and discursively unfolds on the ground and how its various dynamics are recognised by diverse actors because of the concept's spatial insensitivity. As an alternative approach, this paper introduces the concept of the riskscape, which was suggested by German geographer Detlef $M{\ddot{u}}ller$-Mahn, and analyses this concept in the context of the East Asian developmental state. It is meaningful that the East Asian developmental state thesis has strongly promoted the role of the state in stimulating national economic development in underdeveloped countries. However, it should also be noted that an active state role in encouraging modernisation and economic growth within a very short time produces consequences of what Beck calls 'manufactured risks', such as nuclear power plants. Therefore, it is essential to analyse the state in comprehending modernisation and the risk society in East Asia. More specifically, using the case of the location policy for nuclear power facilities, this article reveals how dominant social forces acting in and through the state constructed a national riskscape that minimises the gravity of local risks while prioritising the economic value of the national economy over local risks to produce rapid modernisation. Additionally, it is argued that a dominant national riskscape may become weak from competing with different riskscapes that are constructed based on contingency factors (e.g., political democratisation or a natural disaster). Based on these analyses, the article emphasises that interdisciplinary research using the concept of the riskscape is required to better explain the risks in East Asia.
