  • The technical development of transportation and communication increases freedom of location choice. This higher freedom allows to company can pursues bigger profit than before. Company's separated spatial configurations tend to go to most optimal location, so some places showed unexpected agglomeration. This study conducted to prove "dispersed concentration" for specific example, pharmaceutical enterprises, in real business world. As a result, separation of spatial configuration clearly observed as product output goes bigger and R&D's depth goes deeper. And spatial concentration of each function was found. Most headquarters are located in Seoul, R&D centers make agglomeration at some spaces. Plants' location concentrated until 1990s, but, in 2000s, plants expand out of metropolitan area.

  • The analysis of spatial search direction and its concentration through eye movement can produce some useful data in that it enables to know the features of space elements and their effects on one another. The results by analysing the search features and concentration of spatial sections through the eye-tracking in shops in a department store makes it possible to define the followings. First, the features of 'eye's in & out' could be estimated through the division of sections by the characteristics of those shops and the extraction of central point based on the decision of continuative observation. The decision of continuative observations enabled to analyse the frequency of observation data which can be considered to be 'things watched longtime' and the stared points that is equivalent to 'things seen very often', by which the searching characteristics of spatial sections could be estimated. Second, as with the eye's [in], the right shops had 0.6 times more (3.5%) than those left and as with the eye's [out] the left ones had 0.6 times more (3.5%). It indicates that [in, out] of the right and the left shops had the same difference, which lets us know that with starting point of the middle space, [in] and [out] were paid more attention to the right shops and the left shops respectively. Third, as with the searching directions by section, the searching times [2.9 times] from [B] to [A] were than that [2.6 times] from [A] to [B]. It was also found that the left shops had more searching direction toward [C, D] than the right ones and that those searching activities at the left shops were more active. Fourth, when the searching directions by section are reviewed, the frequency of searching from [B] to [A] was 2.9 and that of the other way 2.6. Also the left shops were found to have more searching direction toward [C, D] than the right ones and those searching activities at the left shops were estimated to be more active.

  • We investigated the relationship between mesoscale spatial distribution of environmental parameters (temperature, salinity, and sigma-t), chlorophyll-a concentration and mesozooplankton in the Yellow Sea during May 1996, 1997, and 1998, with special reference to Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water (YSBCW). Adult calanoid copepods, Calanus sinicus, Paracalanus parvus s.l., Acartia omorii, and Centropages abdominalis were isolated by BVSTEP analysis based on the consistent explainable percentage (-32.3%) of the total mesozooplankton distributional pattern. The copepods, which accounted for 60 to 87% of the total abundances, occupied 73-78% of the copepod community. The YSBCW consistently remained in the northern part of the study area and influenced the spatial distribution of the calanoid copepods during the study periods. Abundances of C. sinicus and P. parvus s.l., which were high outside the YSBCW, were positively correlated with the whole water average temperature (p<0.01). In contrast, the abundances of C. abdominalis and A. omorii, which were relatively high in the YSBCW, were associated with the integrated chl-a concentration based on factor analysis. These results indicate that the YSBCW influenced the mesoscale spatial heterogeneity of average temperature and integrated chl-a concentration through the water column. This consequently affected the spatial distribution pattern of the dominant copepods in association with their respective preferences for environmental and biological parameters in the Yellow Sea during spring.

  • The concentrations of sulfur dioxide ($SO_{2}$) were measured from seven major cities and nine provinces in Korea for the period covering 1998 to 2003. Its concentration data were analyzed to explore the possible influences of spatial and temporal factors on the $SO_{2}$ distribution characteristics. Examination of spatial trends of $SO_{2}$ distribution and behavior indicated several interesting features. Although its annual trends appeared to be affected by the changes in the surrounding environmental conditions (e.g., regulation on the use of S-containing fuels), the seasonal trends indicated a cyclic and systematic pattern that may be characterized as: a gradual decrease in concentrations across winter, spring, fall, and summer. The results showed the generally enhanced mean concentrations of $SO_{2}$ from Ulsan, Busan, and Daegu with 12.8, 10.1, and 8.80 ppb, respectively. On the other hand, notably reduced $SO_{2}$ concentrations were seen from Gwangju and Jeju sites with its mean values of 5.43 and 3.88 ppb, respectively. The overall results of our study indicate that a decrease in $SO_{2}$ concentration levels continued through time, while its spatial distribution appears to be affected most sensitively by such factor as city scale and industrial activities.

  • To sustainably monitor air pollution in Seoul, the number of Air Pollution Monitoring Station has been gradually increased by Korea's Ministry of Environment. Although particulate matters(PM), one of the pollutants measured at the stations, have an significant influence on human body, the concentration of PM in Korea came in second among 35 OECD member countries. In this study, using the data of PM concentration from the stations, distribution maps of PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations over Seoul were generated, and spatial factors potentially related to PM distribution were investigated. Based on a circumscribed hexagon about a circle in radius of 500 meters created as a basic unit, Seoul was sectionalized and PM concentration map was generated using the interpolation technique of 'inverse distance weighting'. The distributions of PM concentrations were investigated with commuting time by administrative district and the outcome was related with land-use type and volume of traffic. Results from this analysis indicated distribution pattern of PM10 concentration was different from that of PM2.5 by administrative district and time. The distribution of PM concentration was strongly related to not only the size of business and trafficked areas among the land-use type, but also the existence of urban green. Further analysis of the relationship between the PM concentration and detailed land-use and urban green maps can be helpful to identify spatial factors which have an impact on the PM concentration on the regional scale.

  • Systematic and efficient forestry management is required because of the long-term low profitability of timber production and forest products. In this situation, non-timber forest products can be the solution to secure stable sources of income for workers in the forestry field. However, the existing studies for non-timber forest products focus on effective production and economic analysis and provide plans for increasing the income and improving the marketing system. Therefore, this research intends to analyze the spatial distribution as well as quantitative concentration of non-timber forest production. To achieve this goal, this study examined the regional concentration and dispersion of non-timber forest production in 2001, 2007, and 2014 using the coefficient of localization(CL) and location quotient(LQ) and investigated the change in spatial distribution using spatial statistics. The production of chestnuts generally showed a concentrated pattern in 2014 based on the outputs of the CL and LQ, but the result of spatial autocorrelation indicated a decrease in the spatial concentration. In addition, astringent persimmon showed more concentration from the output of CL than oak mushroom, but Moran's I suggests the opposite. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the spatial distribution to understand and improve the marketing system and intensify the production of forest products.

  • Spatial prediction methods have been useful to determine the variability of water quality in space and time due to difficulties in collecting spatial data across extensive spaces such as watershed. This study compares two kriging methods in predicting BOD concentration on the unmonitored sites in the Geum River Watershed and to assess its predictive performance by leave-one-out cross validation. This study has shown that cokriging method can make better predictions of BOD concentration than ordinary kriging method across the Geum River Watershed. Challenges for the application of cokriging on the spatial prediction of surface water quality involve the comparison of network-distance-based relationship and euclidean-distance-based relationship for the improvement in the predictive performance.

  • In this study, the data that examined the chloride ion concentration of ground water wells in the west coast of Jeollabukdo applying the GIS spatial estimation method were analyzed. In particular, through the designation of a validation point among ground water wells and then the analysis of error characteristics of the chloride ion concentration by each method of IDW (Inverse Distance Weight), Spline, and Kriging Interpolation method which is proper for estimating salt water intrusion was selected. The main conclusion from this study is as follows. First, as a result of analyzing the error characteristics of various spatial estimation methods by using the data from the chloride ion concentration of 485 ground water wells, the IDW method was found to be the most appropriate for estimating chloride ion concentration by salt water intrusion. Second, analyzing the average chloride ion concentration of the targeted regions has revealed that Gunsan-si with the record of $541mg/{\ell}$ did not meet water quality standards even for industrial use. Both Gimje-si and Gochang-gun satisfied drinking water quality standards and Buan-gun with $272mg/{\ell}$ was slightly below the standards for drinking water. Third, concerning the results of analysis according to administrative districts, as the areas adjacent to the west coast such as Daemyeong-dong, Joong-dong, Jangjae-dong and Guemam-dong in Gunsan-si are found to have very high chloride ion concentration, and both Hoehyeon-myeon and Daeya-myeon bounded by the Mankeong river did not meet water quality standards even for industrial use. From these facts, it is concluded that salt water intrusion has a great effect on Gunsan-si generally.

  • In order to support the basic information for planning and performing the environment management such as Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs), it is highly recommended to understand the spatial distribution of water quality and runoff data in the unit watersheds. Therefore, in the present study, we applied Self-Organizing Map (SOM) to detect the characteristics of spatial distribution of Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) concentration and runoff data which have been measured in the Yeongsan, Seomjin, and Tamjin River basins. For the purpose, the input dataset for SOM was constructed with the mean, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis values of the respective data measured from the stations of 22-subbasins in the rivers. The results showed that the $4{\times}4$ array structure of SOM was selected by the trial and error method and the best performance was revealed when it classified the stations into three clusters according to the basic statistics. The cluster-1 and 2 were classified primarily by the skewness and kurtosis of runoff data and the cluster-3 including the basic statistics of YB_B, YB_C, and YB_D stations was clearly decomposed by the mean value of BOD concentration showing the worst condition of water quality among the three clusters. Consequently, the methodology based on the SOM proposed in the present study can be considered that it is highly applicable to detect the spatial distribution of BOD concentration and runoff data and it can be used effectively for the further utilization using different water quality items as a data analysis tool.
