  • This study was to investigate the surface properties of electrochemically oxidized Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy by anodic spark discharge technique. Anodizing was performed at current density 30 $mA/cm^2$ up to 300 V in electrolyte solutions containing $DL-{\alpha}$-glycerophosphate disodium salt hydrate($DL-{\alpha}$-GP) and calcium acetate (CA). Hydrothermal treatment was done at $300^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs to produce a thin outermost layer of hydroxyapatite (HA). The bioactivity was evaluated from HA formation on the surfaces in a Hanks' solution with pH 7.4 at $36.5^{\circ}C$ for 30 days. The size of micropores and the thickness of oxide film increased and complicated multilayer by increasing the spark forming voltage. Needle-like HA crystals were observed on anodic oxide film after the hydrothermal treatment at $300^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs. When increasing $DL-{\alpha}$-GP in electrolyte composition, the precipitated HA crystals showed the shape of thick and shorter rod. However, when increasing CA, the more fine needle shape HA crystals were appeared. The bioactivity in Hanks' solution was accelerated when the oxide films composed with strong anatase peak with presence of rutile peak. The increase of amount of Ca and P was observed in groups having bioactivity in Hanks' solution. The Ca/P ratio of the precipitated HA layer was equivalent to that of HA crystal and it was closer to 1.67 as increasing the immersion time in Hanks' solution.

  • In this study, a novel antiviral coating method for the air filtration system of subway station was investigated. Using dry aerosol coating process, we developed a high-performance antiviral air filter with spark discharger and carbon brush type ionizer. Silver nanoparticles were produced by a spark discharge generation system with ion injection system and were used as antiviral agents coated onto a medium grade air filter. The pressure drop, filtration efficiency, and antiviral ability of the filter against aerosolized MS2 virus particles as a surrogate of SARS-CoV-2 virus were tested with dust contamination. Dust contamination caused the increase of the filtration efficiency and pressure drop, while the antiviral agents (in this study, silver nanoparticles) coating did not have any significant effect on the filtration efficiency and pressure drop. Using these properties, we suggested a novel method to maximize the antiviral performance of the antiviral air filter that was contaminated by dust particles. Moreover theoretical analysis of antiviral ability with dust contamination and re-coated antiviral agents was carried out using a mathematical model to calculate the time-dependent antiviral effect of the filter under actual conditions of subway station. Our model can be used to apply on antiviral air filtration system of subway station for prevention of pandemic diffusion, and predict the life cycle of an antiviral filter.

  • Titanium alloys are extensively used in high-temperature applications due to their excellent high strength and corrosion resistance properties. However, titanium alloys are problematic because they tend to be extremely difficult-to-cut material. In this paper, the powder synthesis, spark plasma sintering (SPS), bulk material characteristics and machinability test of hybrid $Ti_2AlC$ ceramic bulk materials were systematically examined. The bulk samples mainly consisted of $Ti_2AlC$ materials with density close to theoretical value were synthesized by a SPS method. Random orientation and good crystallization of the $Ti_2AlC$ was observed at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 10 min under SPS sintering conditions. Scanning electron microscopy results indicated a homogeneous distribution and nano-laminated structure of $Ti_2AlC$ MAX phase. The hardness and electrical conductivity of $Ti_2AlC$ were higher than that of Ti 6242 alloy at sintering temperature of $1000^{\circ}C{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the machinability of the hybrid $Ti_2AlC$ bulk materials is better than that of the Ti 6242 alloy for micro-EDM process of micro-hole shape workpiece.

  • Generally, it has been regarded that there are two kinds of the effect of the electrodes, especially of the cathode in the gas discharge, (a) the effect caused by the difference of the cathode meterial and (b) the effect by the change of the cathode surface state even in the same meterials. Thus the two effects must be investigated independently to study the roles of the cathode in gas discharges. This paper measured sparking voltage in Rare gas (Ar, He) for the change of sparking voltage in repeating sparks and for the effect of (a) and (b) mentioned above, under the condition that the desorption of impurities from the cathod can be nigligible, and it is obtained that the correlative relations of the work function, sparking voltage and secondary coefficient are comparatively simple. In addition, the interesting character of the minimum point of the paschen's curves is found. The results were as follows; 1) The value of (pd)min with minimum pint of sparking voltage, (Vs)min, is 0.7-0.9 Torr. cm in Argon, but is 5.6-7.1 Torr. cm in Helium, and Paschen's curve in Helium shows slow curve than in Argon. 2) The minimum point of the Paschen's curve is satisfied actually Townsend's self sustaining criterion in Argon, but non-satisfaction in Helium, and the Townsend's secondary coefficient .gamma. action have compound property (.gamma.$_{i}$, .gamma.$_{p}$, .gamma.$_{m}$) in Helium. 3) The dependenting character of work function in Helium is less than in Argon. 4) The minimum point of sparking voltage increase under oxidized electrode than clear electrode in Au and Ag, but minimum point decrease in Ni and Cu.

  • This paper presents a brief summary on a relatively new plasma aided electrolytic surface treatment process for light metals. A brief discussion regarding the advantages, principle, process parameters and applications of this process is discussed. The process owes its origin to Sluginov who discovered an arc discharge phenomenon in electrolysis in 1880. A similar process was studied and developed by Markov and coworkers in 1970s who successfully deposited an oxide film on aluminium. Several investigation thereafter lead to the establishment of suitable process parameters for deposition of a crystalline oxide film of more than $100{\mu}m$ thickness on the surface of light metals such as aluminium, titanium and magnesium. This process nowadays goes by several names such as plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), micro-arc oxidation (MOA), anodic spark deposition (ASD) etc. Several startups and surface treatment companies have taken up the process and deployed it successfully in a range of products, from military grade rifles to common off road sprockets. However, there are certain limitations to this technology such as the formation of an outer porous oxide layer, especially in case of magnesium which displays a Piling Bedworth ratio of less than one and thus an inherent non protective oxide. This can be treated further but adds to the cost of the process. Overall, it can be said the PEO process offers a better solution than the conventional coating processes. It offers advantages considering the fact that he electrolyte used in PEO process is environmental friendly and the temperature control is not as strict as in case of other surface treatment processes.

  • In order to regenerate the activated carbon polluted by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using microwave, adsorption and desorption characteristics of benzene over activated carbon (AC) coated with insulating materials were investigated. Physical characteristics of activated carbon and insulator-coated ACs were investigated by means of $N_2$ gas adsorption and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The amount of VOC adsorbed showed a positive relationship with the specific surface area of the ACs, and spark discharge over insulator-coated ACs did not occur. Potassium silicate (PS) was the best binder for coating of insulating materials on AC. Amount of benzene desorbed by microwave irradiation was dependent on output power of microwave. Nearly same performance was obtained even though the adsorption-desorption operation under microwave irradiation was repeated 5 times. Finally, it was known that the microwave heating was a very effective mean for regenerating the polluted AC.

  • In the present study, the combustion characteristics of methane and hydrogen-supplemented methane as alternative fuels for automotive vehicles were investigated at various hydrogen substitution rate, ignition position and ignition methods in a CVCC. The main results obtained from the study can be summarized as follow. In case of center ignition and neat methane-air mixture, the flame propagation processes are propagated with an elliptical shape, but they are changed an instable elliptical shape flame with very regular cells and higher velocity by increasing the hydrogen supplement rate. In case of side, 0.5R ignition and neat methane-air mixture, the flame propagation processes are propagated with an instable elliptical shape flame, but they are changed from an instable elliptical shape to wedge shape flame with very irregular cells and higher velocity by increasing the hydrogen supplement rate. Although the flame propagation shape with ignition position and ignition devices was not differ, the flame area of MSCDI device was a little larger than it of CDI device at the same time.

  • Anodic $TiO_2$film on Ti substrate was fabricated at 180V in sulfuric acid solutions containing phosphoric acid and hydrogen peroxide. Effects of the anodizing conditions on the morphology of the oxide layers, and chemical states of the component elements of the layers were studied primarily using SEM, XRD, AFM, and XPS. The pores in the oxide layer was not uniform in size, shape, and growth direction particularly near the interface between the substrate and the oxide layer, compared with those of the surface layer. The formation of irregular type of pores seemed to be attributed to spark discharge phenomena which heavily occurred during increasing the anodic voltage. The pore diameter and the cell size increased, and the number of cells per unit area decreased with the increasing time. From the XPS results, it was shown that component elements of the electrolytes, P and S, existed in the chemical states of $PO_4^{-3}$ , $P_2$$O_{5}$, $SO_4^{-2}$ , $SO_3^{-2}$ , P, S, etc., which were penetrated from the electrolytes into the oxide layer during anodization.

  • In this study, Arc plasma was employed for the thermal decomposition of nitrous oxide($N_2O$). Conventional ignition systems such as torch, spark, and catalyst systems, have disadvantages in that they are not reliable and do not provide rapid responses. Therefore, this study suggests the plasma application of plasma to overcome the problems of conventional ignition methods. A gas temperature and combustion experiment was carried out to investigate the feasibility to a novel igniter. The gas temperature was measured around $960^{\circ}C$ at 1 g/s, 0.7 A at the nearest wall. In addition, a combustion test was successfully conducted in 3.1 sec after the plasma discharge was initiated with a main flow rate of 10 g/s. The energy consumption for ignition was 1,780 J(574 W).
