  • A study has been conducted experimentally on heat transfer characteristics of louvered fin heat exchangers with various fin spacings in air. The experimental results are as follows; 1. Mean heat transfer coefficient is increased with increasing air velocity and the optimum fin spacing shows at S=5mm. 2. Pressure drop is increased with increasing air velocity and its maximum value shows at S=3.5mm and its minimum value shows at S=6mm. 3. $\bar{h}/{\Delta}P$ is decreased with increasing air velocity and its maximum value shows at S=5mm and its minimum value shows at S=3.5mm.

  • Allium wakegi Araki was grown at plant spacings of 5, 10, 15, and 20 cm to determine the effect of planting density on the growth and yield. Allium wakegi Araki plants grown at the 5 cm plant spacing had the lowest bulb diameter and bulb weight, while plants at the lowest density (20 cm spacing) had the highest bulb diameter, bulb number, bulb weight and fresh weight. In general, plants grown at narrower spacings produced significantly smaller bulb diameter and bulb weight, but resulted in the highest yields and plants per hectare and lower fresh weights per plant.

  • Air side heat transfer and pressure drop for f 9.52 fin-tube heat exchanger with various types of slit and louver fins were measured, and compared with wave-slit fin. Longitudinal and transverse tube spacings of the heat exchangers are 21.65 mm and 25mm respectively. Actual heat exchanger was tested using water, and the tests were performed for 2 row heat exchangers with 3 different fin spacings, 1.3, 1.5 and 1.7 mm. The overall performance of the enhanced fins was evaluated by comparing heat transfer coefficient with respect to fan power

  • The Gamma Distribution is widely used in Engineering and Industrial applications. Estimation of parameters is revisited in the two-parameter Gamma distribution. The parameters are estimated by minimizing the likelihood ratios. A comparative study between the method of moments, the maximum likelihood method, the method of product spacings, and minimization of three different likelihood ratios is performed using simulation. For the scale parameter, the maximum likelihood estimate performs better and for the shape parameter, the product spacings estimate performs better. Among the three likelihood ratio statistics considered, the Anderson-Darling statistic has inferior performance compared to the Cramer-von-Misses statistic and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic.

  • Experimental studies are conducted for the wave forces acting on the vertically mounted circular piles in the waves. Two-three-cylinder arrays are equally spaced and the spacings(S/D) as well as the incident angles of various waves are changed to study their separate effects on the wave forces. The numerical results based on the diffraction theory are in good agreement with the experimental results, and the diffraction theory well predicts the trend of the wave forces when the spacings and the incident angles are changed.

  • Numerical simulation of laminar flow over two spheres in a side-by-side arrangement is carried out to investigate the effect of the inter-sphere spacing on the flow characteristics. The Reynolds numbers considered are 100, 250, and 300, covering the steady axisymmetric, steady planar-symmetric, and unsteady planar-symmetric flows in the case of a single sphere. Results show that the drag and lift coefficients and wake structures are significantly modified depending on both the Reynolds number and the spacing between the spheres. At Re=100, the flow is steady planar-symmetric irrespective of the spacing, but it shows some variation according to the spacing at Re=250 and 300. That is, the flow maintains planar symmetry of the single-sphere wake at large spacings, while it loses the symmetry at small spacings due to the generation of new asymmetric vortical structures. It is also shown that the drag and lift coefficients generally increase with decreasing inter-sphere spacing because the high pressure region is formed near the gap between the spheres.

  • Experimental results and numerical computations were conducted to investigate the effect of the confined wall on the flow and heat transfer characteristics for a two-dimensional impinging jet. Experimental results and Numerical solutions were obtained by using the particle image velocimetry and the commercial CFD code (CFX 11), respectively. The parameters studied were jet Reynolds number (Re=5,000), conditions of confined wall (unventilate), nozzle to plate spacings ($H/W=1{\sim}16$), and nozzle to nozzle spacing (S/W=6). Experimental and numerical results were agreed well with each other. The maximum heat transfer point was found variation of nozzle to plate spacings.

  • In the present study, effects of degree of confinement on heat transfer characteristics of a micro-scale slot jet impinging on a heated flat plate are experimentally investigated. The effects of Reynolds numbers (Re = $1000{\sim}5000$), lateral distances (x/B = $1{\sim}10$), nozzle-to-plate spacings (Z/B = $1{\sim}20$), and degree of confinement ($B_c$/B = 3, 48) on the Nusselt number are considered. The results show that the effects of the degree of confinement on the cooling performance of the micro-scale impinging slot jet are significant at lower nozzle-to-plate spacings and higher Reynolds numbers. In addition, it is shown that the cooling performance of the micro-scale unconfined slot impinging jet is 200% higher than that of the micro-scale confined slot impinging jet.

  • A numerical shallow water wave deformation model to solve unsteady mild slope equation was develope(1. The energy equation of Izumiya and Horikawa(1984) for wave breaking and bottom friction was incorporated to estimate more realistically energy damping resulted from wave breaking and reflection. A numerical scheme for variable grid spacings was also introduced to complement the defect of unsteady mild slope equation limiting the grid spacings. This model was tested and compared with the existing analytic solutions and physical modelings, and applied to a practical situation.

  • Entropy is an important term in statistical mechanics that was originally defined in the second law of thermodynamics. In this paper, we consider the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE), maximum product spacings estimation (MPSE) and Bayesian estimation of the entropy of an inverse Weibull distribution (InW) under a generalized type I progressive hybrid censoring scheme (GePH). The MLE and MPSE of the entropy cannot be obtained in closed form; therefore, we propose using the Newton-Raphson algorithm to solve it. Further, the Bayesian estimators for the entropy of InW based on squared error loss function (SqL), precautionary loss function (PrL), general entropy loss function (GeL) and linex loss function (LiL) are derived. In addition, we derive the Lindley's approximate method (LiA) of the Bayesian estimates. Monte Carlo simulations are conducted to compare the results among MLE, MPSE, and Bayesian estimators. A real data set based on the GePH is also analyzed for illustrative purposes.
