  • It is increasing construction of long span railway bridge with concrete track system for speed up of railway and efficient maintenance of track. As the sleeper of the concrete track system layed on a bridge is fixed on deck of the bridge, the displacement of the sleeper and deck is same. Therefore, the spacing between two sleeper installed at the end of the adjacent deck near the expansion joint of bridge becomes vary according to the longitudinal expansion of a deck by temperature change. By the way, if the spacing of sleepers become increase excessively, it causes large bending stress of in a rail, and it can leads failure or reduction of fatigue life of the rail. Further more, the excessive displacement of the rail may induce decrease ride comfort as well as corrugation of rail surface. Therefore, it is required to determine the allowable maximum sleeper spacing to prevent such problems. For the purpose, investigation on the influence factor on sleeper spacing for straight track was carried out. Variation of bending moment in a rail, wheel force, and the ratio of primary and secondary deflection of the rail according to sleeper spacing was investigated, and, as a result, the maximum allowable sleeper spacing at the bridge expansion joint was suggested.

  • Recently, the cases of freeze-thaw distress on concrete pavement in domestic have been reported periodically. Hereupon, the necessity to establish the standard of spacing factor came to the fore. The test method for analyzing spacing factor is provided in the standard of ASTM C 457. Since researchers tend to judge study results subjectively, the results should be revised throughly. Image analysis program for determining the characteristics of air-void system on hardened concrete identify air void through the difference of a color. The pixel intensity values used in this program have a significant effect on the analysis results. This study compared the automated void count by varying pixel intensity values with the manual void count in order to determine the optimum range of pixel intensity values. Also, this study analyzed the air-void characteristics on eight kinds of concrete mixtures. In this study, it was confirmed that the variation of void counted manually was around 10% from the results of round robin test, and that the optimum range of pixel intensity values is around 80~90. And it was also confirmed that air content (as a whole) was increased generally and spacing factor was decreased by increasing air-entrainer content. But some concrete mixtures showed a tendency that air content was constant and spacing factor was decreased by increasing air-entrainer content. This causes the air entrained by air-entrainer has more influence on spacing factor than air content. Also, the deviation of spacing factor by cutting position of concrete specimen was about 30~100${\mu}m$ because of the limit of 2-D image analysis. The additional study about variation of spacing factor by cutting position of concrete specimen will be performed later.

  • 1.55 ${\mu}m$multi-quantum well (MQW) broad area laser diodes with different linewidth enhancement factors ($\alpha{-factor}$) of 2 and 4 were fabricated. The far-fields of the laser diodes were measured. It was observed that the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the far-fields and the filamentations were reduced in the laser diodes for which the value of the $\alpha{-factor}$ was small. As injection current increased, the FWHM of the far-field also increased regardless of the a-factor. This phenomenon was explained by reduction of filament spacing as injection current increased.

  • In this study, Spiral inductors on the $SiO_2$/Si(100) substrate were fabricated by the magnetron sputtering method. Cu thin film with the thickness of 2 ${\mu}m$ was deposited on the substrate. Also we fabricated square inductors through the wet chemical etching technique. The inductors are completely specified by the turn width and the spacing between spirals. Both the width and spacing between spirals were varied from 10 to 60 ${\mu}m$ and from 20 to 70 ${\mu}m$, respectively. Inductance and Q factor dependent on the RF frequency were investigated to analyze performance of inductor arrays. Also, We recommend that the reasonable Q-factors, spec's turns and thickness of the coil for inductors cab be set to be ideal condition.

  • Precision measurement of silicon wafer resistivity has been using single-configuration Four-Point Probe(FPP) method. This FPP method have to applying sample size, shape and thickness correction factor for a probe pin spacing to precision measurement of silicon wafer. The deference for resistivity measurement values applied correction factor and not applied correction factor was about 1.0 % deviation. The sample size, shape and thickness correction factor for a probe pin spacing have an effects on precision measurement for resistivity of silicon wafer.

  • It is generally known that the frost-resistance of concrete is much affected by the air content in concrete and by the air void system or air distribution. And also the frost-resistance is believed to vary with the stre¬ngth of concrete. This article is prepared to describe, based on experiment, the effect of the air content and the air void system, particularly the effect of the spacing factor, on the freeze-thaw resistance of the high strength conc¬rete. For this purpose, I first worked on Non-AE concrete to make its compressive strength set about 400 to 500 kg/em'. However, the freeze-thaw test on the Non-AE concrete resulted in low durability factor, I.e., 10-2~0%. Thus to enhance the durability, another supplementary step was needed. I used AE admixture. which enhanced durability by changing the air content from 2% to 12%. The frost-thaw test was then performed 500 cycles on the 20 kind of concrete mixtures which differ in unit cement content and in water-cement ratio. Keywords : frost -resistance, air content, air void system, air distribution, spacing factor, freeze-thaw test, dur ability factor. capillary cavity, Linear Traverse Method.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of column spacing and beam size on the lateral displacement and shear lag phenomenon in bundled tube system. According to the parametric study in which the spacing of columns, the size of columns and girders in bundled tube were selected as a parameter, it is the most efficient to increase the size of the interior columns with the largest reduction of lateral drift if the steel tonnage of a frame can be increased. It was noticed that the shear lag was affected more by the exterior stiffness factor and ratio than by the interior ones when column spacing was changed, and when the size of column was changed, the reverse phenomenon was happened. And The change of column spacing affected shear lag, lateral drift, and tonnage more than that of column size or girder size.

  • In this study, the combustion characteristics were investigated with the variation of design factors on multiple slit gas burner. The design factors consist of slit height, width, spacing, and inner length. The combustion characteristics were made analysis of the CO emission and NOx emission by using CO analyzer and NOx analyzer. The lower perimeter to area and the narrow spacing extends the lift-flame limit. The CO emission increases with the increasing perimeter to area ratio at the same condition. The NOx emission is found to be less significant with the port perimeter to area ratio. The flame interference might highly depend on the spacing and port perimeter to area ratio, and it also affects the burner performance.

  • Maglev System is expected to be a new public transportation for future because of its special characteristics. Sleepers of railway role on transferring the lateral load to guideway for Maglev and controlling the distance between rails. Variation of distance of sleepers can affect dynamic responses for maglev guideway. In this paper, Daejon maglev guideway is analyzed to find proper tie spacing of a maglev system. The analysis included using a maglev trainload and also the dead load as the primary forces on bridges. Not only the dynamic behavior of bridges is investigated under sleeper conditions, but also impact factor about vertical displacement on the guideway is produced. This guideway is analyzed in four cases followed by changing spacing of sleeper and then obtained dynamic characteristics such as displacements, acceleration and impact factor by Finite Element Analysis.

  • This paper proposed a crack spacing calculation formulation which is an important parameter for calculating the crack width, that is the main factor for verification of serviceability limit states and durability performance evaluation of reinforced concrete members. The basic equation of average crack spacing is derived by considering the bond characteristics which is the governing equation for the analysis of cracking behavior in reinforced concrete members. In order to consider the effect of the cover thickness and concrete compressive strength, the crack spacing measured in 124 direct tensile tests performed by several researchers was analyzed and each coefficient was proposed. And, correlation analysis was performed from 80 specimen data where the maximum and average crack spacing were simultaneously measured, and a correlation coefficient that can easily predict the maximum crack spacing from the average crack spacing was proposed. The results of the proposed average crack spacing equation and maximum crack spacing correlation were compared with those current design code specification. The comparisons of proposed equations and the Korean design codes show that the proposed formulation for the average crack spacing and the maximum crack spacing improves the accuracy and reliability of prediction compared to the corresponding provisions of the Korean Concrete Structural Design Code and Korean Highway Bridge Design Code (Limit States Design).
