  • The purpose of this study was to devise guidelines for the kitchen workspace of the aged by examining current usage. To achieve this objective, surveys were conducted and measurement were taken between June 15 and lune 30, 2005. The data were gathered from 50 women over 65- years-old who live in the downtown and suburbs of Seoul, Korea. The collected data were processed using SPSS 12.0 for Microsoft Windows and resulted in the following conclusions: The kitchen for the aged needs to be laid out in ㄱ-shape and the refrigerator needs to be positioned prominently. The height of the work counter is relative to the user's height (${\times}0.49{\sim}056$). and the length varies depending on the available space of the house and the type of work counter needed: however it was found that it should be at least 270cm Concerning the depth of the work counter, the standard sizes (60cm) currently on the market did not cause any inconvenience. It was found that the sink must be designed to allow for some space at the bottom so as to ensure comfortable sedentary work. Also, an electrical oven was preferred over a gas-fuelled one. Finally, the height of the upper cabinet should be relative to the user's height at ${\times}0.85{\sim}1.0$ from the floor to the bottom of the cabinet.

  • In recent years, Korean population aged 65 and over has grown faster(7.2% in 2000, 14.4% projected in 2018 and 20.0% in 2026) than the other age groups and average life expectancy has increased from 65.8 years in 1980 to 75.9 years in 2000. The Aging Simulation Center(ASC) was built for people to give educational chance for further understanding of the elderly and the environment for the aged. People are able to recognize the changes including hearing loss, vision changes, and changes in the ability to touch and move after experiencing the simulated daily life of older persons. In general, ASC is composed of residential setting area and exhibition area of daily commodities for the elderly and care person. Currently, there are four ASCs in Korea. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of space design and design elements of ASCs and to suggest design implementation for better residential environment for the elderly. For the research purpose, design characteristics such as floor plans and spatial design elements of three ASCs were analyzed and compared. As a whole, space design of three ASCs was almost same without distinguished characteristics. The major finding of this study indicates that the ASC is considerably helpful environment to understand aging. However, some of design elements such as lighting should be supplemented for safety issue. It is recommended for future design of ASC to include exterior space including outdoor stairs, paths and roads and so on. In addition, reception and preparation area should be arranged with universally designed furniture.

  • For aerospace propulsion systems, Titanium Hydride Potassium Perchlorate (THPP) is a material commonly used as a pyrotechnic initiator that generates gas when energy is supplied or as a supplement charge for NASA standard initiator (NSI). However, when the energetic materials are stored for a long time, it faces the problem of 'aging'. In this study, changes in thermodynamic properties of THPP aged under various humidity environments were identified through thermal analysis and surface analysis. First, a considerable amount of cracks on the surface of the oxidant was found in the aged THPPs. Particularly, when the humidity level increased, the number and length of the cracks rapidly increased. Also, the deterioration of Viton was found only in the thermally aged sample whereas the oxidation of the fuel was more pronounced in the hygrothermally aged samples. The extracted kinetic parameters of THPP on the reaction progress vary greatly by the humidity level, indicating that moisture significantly changes the performance and combustion reaction of THPP, which may eventually result in a reduced lifespan.

  • Objective: This study aimed to retrospectively analyze the prevalence of orthodontic problems and the proportion of patients who underwent orthodontic diagnosis among children aged 6 (n = 300), 7 (n = 400), and 8 (n = 400) years who had undergone panoramic radiography. Methods: Children were divided into five groups according to their chief complaint and consultation: conservative dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, periodontics, and prosthodontics). Chief complaints investigated included first molar eruption, lack of space for incisor eruption, frequency of eruption problems, lack of space, impaction, supernumerary teeth (SNT), missing teeth, and ectropion eruption. The number of patients whose chief complaint was not related to orthodontics but had dental problems requiring orthodontic treatment was counted. The proportion of patients with orthodontic problems who received an orthodontic diagnosis was also examined. Results: Dental trauma and SNT were the most frequent chief complaints among the children. The proportion of patients with orthodontic problems increased with age. However, the orthodontic diagnosis rates based on panoramic radiographs among children aged 6, 7, 8 years were only 1.5% (6 years) and 23% (7 and 8 years). Conclusions: Accurate information should be provided to patient caregivers to correct misconceptions regarding the appropriateness of delaying orthodontic examination until permanent dentition is established.

  • This study explored the sandplay therapy case of an elementary school-aged boy who was mentally handicapped for the purposes of understanding his psyche. The goal of the therapy was to help him to adjust more appropriately to situations he commonly encountered within the free and protected space made possible during sandplay therapy. Fifty-five therapy sessions were held. The client showed a lack of fundamental care, which was accompanied with regression in the initial phase of therapy (1~14, my situations & regression). In the intermediate phase of therapy (15~52, rebirth), he experienced rebirth and grew psychologically with the death of both a spider and a king snake. In the final phase of therapy (53~55, the acquisition of treasure), he finished his journey with the acquisition of treasure in a free and protected space. By exhibiting a similar psyche with non-handicapped boys, this study confirmed an archetypal pattern existing even in a boy who was mentally handicapped.

  • South Korea, which has seen economic growth at a rapid pace and the number of the old people on the rise, is facing challenges, including social problems resulting from the aged society, lack of work force supporting the elderly and needs of renewing residential environment for them. The old people in the process of senility are forced to experience a wide range of physical, mental and social difficulties and problems when they are living in existing houses. This study was conduced with a sample group consisting of the elderly who were living in detached places of multiplex houses and a plane which was developed as a tool for a workshop, the one that is a collective residence model, also known as one of an alternative housing for the old in the future. This study finds that in order to get rid of negative images of the collective residence for the old, residence surroundings for the aged should be created not as uniform space formation but as aging-in-place, and specifically, considering that the quality of life for the aged remains to continue is needed. Findings can be a reference to create ideas of developing residential environment for the aged.

  • Due to the rapid demographic and structural changes, Korea has faced a variety of social issues and quickly entered the aged society since the 2000s. In order deal with this reality, diverse types of welfare policies are emerging in the society as a whole. The government began to supply domestic public silver housing in 2016 to provide against the quickly growing aged society and now, the government is planning to supply approximately 50,000 housing by 2022 for quantitative growth of aged society, by selecting 1st and 2nd designated areas for the project additionally. This public retirement(silver) housing combines 'space' with 'service'. The lower floors are a public silver welfare Facilities and the upper floors are a housing spaces. This type of housing is to deal with requirements of rental housing residents by combining physical space with supporting service. Based on barrier-free design, the complex and unit house have safety handles and alarm bells in the bathroom, undulating washstands, bathroom sliding doors, corridor safety handles, and emergency safety exit lamps in each housing unit so the aged and the disabled can use easily and conveniently. Also, hand rails are installed and stepped pulleys are removed to promote convenience. Currently, the government is planning to increase the supply, focusing on low-income groups, such as beneficiaries of national basic livelihood and the working poor. Recognizing that the public retirement(silver) housing project is at its early stage, this study examined satisfaction, based on evaluations of real residents. This study aimed to obtain more empirical research data and apply them to public retirement(silver) house space analysis. For analysis, this study targeted Wirye public retirement(silver) housing and Magnolia public retirement(silver) housing that are in operation, and literature review, previous research review, and field survey were conducted to examine the present state. Using the questionnaires consisting of four large classification items; Block Layout, Housing Unit, Welfare Facilities, and Barrier-free Design, and sub-details, a survey was conducted to analyze residents' satisfaction. In conclusion, it is anticipated that this study would serve as basic research data about public retirement(silver) housing to increase continuously in future by analyzing public retirement(silver) housing spaces, on the basis of the analyzed data.
