  • Flexible space is an adaptable space that has been increasingly used in many office and academic buildings as it increases the use of the space available and reduces the unnecessary building area. However, the architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) industry lacks a formalized method that helps architects predict and update the space utilization of flexible space during the project development, as such prediction aims to maximize the use of the building space available without exceeding the target utilization policy. Consequently, current manual utilization prediction results in lower accuracy level and limits the maximized use of the flexible space, which has multiple space-use types that affect the prediction of utilization. To address this problem, we identified eight space-use type differentiators (SUTDs) based on the literature review and observations and discussed the use of them in automated space-use analysis (SUA), which can predict the utilization of flexible space via a computer program. This research builds on SUA and contributes to flexible space planning by providing a means of a more comprehensive and accurate SUA.

  • Enhancing utilization of buildings is gaining in importance in response to a challenging economy; thus, there is a need for a method that analyzes space, user, and user activity in an integrated way to provide project stakeholders with utilization information to support their decision-making about buildings. Conventional methods, such as architectural programming and post-occupancy evaluation, lack a formal relationship between user activity and other information, and therefore, are coarse-grained. This relationship has been formalized by two relatively new methods that provide fine-grained utilization information: workplace planning and space-use analysis. We characterize these two methods with focuses on their usage in different phases (i.e., planning, design, occupancy), required information that needs to be gathered, and the achievement and limitations in terms of three criteria, i.e., consistency, efficiency, and transparency. This characterization would not only help project stakeholders select and use a method that best meets their purposes for enhancing utilization of their buildings, but also provide researchers with promising research topics regarding enhancing utilization of buildings.

  • The study performed analysis focusing on specialized convention and exhibition facilities among convention and exhibition facilities in Korea. The procedures and results were as follows: First, by theoretical consideration, meaning and contents of convention and exhibition programs done in convention and exhibition facilities were considered and after that, general characteristics of the programs which were the main of space utilization was derived. Second, considering scale and location, 6 facilities were re-selected for in-depth research from 12 facilities investigated preliminarily. Selected facilities were categorized by scale and through the analysis of programs done in this facilities for the last 1 year, overview and characteristics of utilization for exhibition space, conference space, and multi-purpose space, etc were analyzed. Third, through the case study on the programs, individual characteristics of space utilization by convention and exhibition program were analyzed. From the result of the study, considering the whole, the space utilization of programs was done as conference space rather than exhibition space and the ratio of use as conference space to use as exhibition space was 1.8 in the large facilities, 6.7 and 7.6 in the middle facilities and the small facilities, respectively. In the middle and small facilities, the ratio of use of one room as conference space was very high. In the large facilities, there was no big difference with the ratio 50:50 of the programs involving exhibition to other programs, but in the middle and small facilities, the ratio of the former to the latter was observed over 2.4 and 3.6. This fact indicated that the function of use as promotion and communication space for companies and industrial entities which were the essential purposes became low.

  • Space development and utilization must be conducted within a framework of "peaceful uses" principle under Space Treaty. Japan ratified the treaty in 1967, and interpreted "peaceful uses" as "non-military uses" then. A ghost of "peaceful uses" principle has been hung over Japan up to the moment. Japan's space development and utilization has been conducted with genuine academic interest, and therefore Japan did not introduce space infrastructures to national security policy and did not facilitate growth of space industry. When the Cold War ended, Northeast Asian security environment makes Japan difficult to maintain an interpretation as "non-military uses". Besides the change of external security environment, the domestic industry situation and a series of rocket launching failure needed reexamination of Japan's space policy. Japan is gradually changing its space policy, and introducing space infrastructure in a national security policy under a "generalization" theory that gave a broad interpretation of "peaceful uses" principle. Council for Science and Technology Policy (CSTP) adopted a basic strategy of Japan's space policy in 2004. Since then, a long-term report of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), an investigation report of Society of Japanese Aerospace Companies (SJAC) and a proposal of Japan Business Federation (JSF) were followed. Japan will promote space development and utilization in national security policy with a "strictly defensive defense" strategy and "non-aggressive uses"principle for protection of life and property of Japanese people and stabilization of East Asian countries.

  • This paper considers a special case of the two-dimensional bin-packing problem for identical items. The objective of this work is to maximize the space utilization. The main contribution of the paper is to suggest a new heuristic algorithm keeping in view the existing complexity of racking system for the footwear boxes in the compartments of different sizes for a warehouse. The results show that a significant improvement can be obtained. An economic choice of compartments is also estimated using the criteria for maximizing space utilization. A non-linear mathematical model was presented based on the constraints of racking dynamics.

  • A study of facility securement and space utilization at national universities in Korea was conducted in order to help develop an efficient model for space management at national universities going forward. For the study, 36 national universities were asked to submit answers to a questionnaire on usage of campus facilities in 2013. We then analyzed the results of space management for the 27 universities that participated in the questionnaire in each of the past three years (2011-2013). Lastly, we conducted an awareness test on the space utilization policies and space management for these universities. The results are as follows. First, the aggregate average score for space utilization over the past three years is 74.06. The annual average score increased year-over-year and then decreased; it was 69.44 in 2011, 80.68 in 2012, and 72.05 in 2013. A decline in the sense of responsibility of universities to effectively manage space appears to be a factor in the decrease. Second, with 53% of respondents in agreement, treatment of campus area as private space appears to be the biggest hurdle for efficient space management. As such, a plan to foster a more communal view of campus facility area is required. Third, resistance from constituents to existing guidelines for space allocation on campuses appears to be limited (78.1% of respondents answered the guidelines currently in place were average, satisfactory, or very satisfactory). We believe this result points to a mutual understanding forming amongst constituents regarding guidelines on space allocation on campus.results of satisfaction research: the users are generally satisfied with education and student.
