Studies on Resistance to Septoria Brown Spot(Septoria glycines Hemmi) in Native Soybean Collection (재래종 대두의 갈문병 저항성에 관한 연구)

  • Of 1, 428 entries examined to locate gene sources resistant to Septoria brown spot from the Korean native soybean collection, most lines were evaluated as highly susceptible, showing numerous leaf spots with surrounding yellowing tissue, while 136 lines of the entries showed the leaf spots without the yellowing. However, leaf defoliation was so much higher in inoculated soybean plants than those of uninoculated, regardless of leaf yellowing that resistance to Septoria brown spot could not be characterized by the lesion type. Various yield composing characters were negatively correlated to the leaf defoliation, suggesting that early defoliation incited by Septoria brown spot might result in significant yield reduction in soybean.

Changes in Isoflavone Contents and Physicochemical Properties of Soybean Leaf Extract by Extraction Conditions (추출조건에 따른 콩잎 추출물의 이소플라본 함량 및 이화학적 특성)

  • To utilize soybean leaf, which is a waste product in soybean production, as a value-added food material, this study aimed to investgate the extraction efficiency of isoflavone from soybean leaf and to characterize physicochemical properties of the extract. Maximum isoflavone content of $59.74{\pm}4.54mg/l$ was obtained from soybean leaf extracted at $90^{\circ}C$ for 12 h. DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-pricylhydrazyl) radical-scavenging activity and total polyphenol contents reached maximum levels of $67.26{\pm}3.64%$ and $1,688.68{\pm}97.37{\mu}g/ml$ chlorogenic acid equivalent, respectively. Based on the contents of isoflavone and total polyphenol, and DPPH radical-scavenging activity, optimum extraction conditions for soybean leaf using water as solvent were $90^{\circ}C$ and 12 h.

The Effect of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium on the Differentiation of Soybean young Leaf (대두치엽의 분화에 미치는 질소 인산 가리의 영향)

  • The present paper was designed to investigate the effect of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium on the histological differentiation of the young leaves of soybean (Glycinemax, M.). Observations were made on the numbers of lamina cells and lateral veins, width and thickeness of the lamina and vascularization of the midrib in the 5th leaf, and the differentiation of leaves at 42$\mu$ from the apical tips of the shoot apecis. Samples were taken at the time when the 2nd leaf was completed. The experimental plots were divided into twelve parts. And the results obtained are as follows. 1) Nitrogen stimulated the differentiation of the leaf, the vascuralization of the midrib and increased the numbers of lamina cells and lateral veins. 2) Phosphorus promoted the differentiation of lamina at the first stage of soybean growth. It was more effective in the plots of excessive application than otherwise. It had a small effect on the differentiation of lateral veins. 3) Among the elements, a deficiency of postassium resulted in a reduced differentiation of the lamina potassium had no effect on the thickening growth of the lamina and the differentiation of the midrib. 4) It appeared that phosphorus might compensate for the negative effect of potassium in the potassium and phosphorus plots.

Severity of Cowpea mosaic virus and Putkong Disease Monitoring and Purification of Cowpea mosaic virus (석량풋콩재배지에서의 동부모자이크바이러스병의 발생도 및 풋콩병해모니터링과 동부모자이크 바이러스의 순화)

  • One hundred and eighty-six leaves of soybean cv. Seokryangputkong that showed mild mosaic symptoms were collected randomly and ELISA tests were conducted with those leaf samples to screen the presence of Cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV). Ninety-three out of 186 samples reacted positively to CPMV, but those samples did negatively to Soybean mosaic virus (SMV). At least, 55 leaf samples revealed higher values than that of positive control. The results strongly confirmed that CPMV occurred severely in soybean cv. Seokryangputkong. However, a question is raised on the primary reservoir and vector for transmission of this virus. Since the farmer changes seeds every year, seed transmission is excluded. The virus was also purified, the analysis of coat protein conformed the virus of cowpea mosaic virus and UV absorption pattern confirmed that the causal virus of mosaic disease in soybean putkong was cowpea mosaic virus.

Effect of High Temperature during Reproductive Growth Period on Soybean Growth, Nitrogen and Cation Content (생식생장기의 고온장해가 콩의 생육과 질소 및 이온함량에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of high-temperature during the reproductive growth period on the soybean growth and yield. Two soybean cultivars, Hwangkeumkong (HKK) and Pungsannamulkong (PSNK) were used in this study. By high-temperature treatment, plant height was increased in the two soybean cultivars, however, leaf area and dry weight were greatly reduced. Number of pod per plant was not changed by high-temperature treatment. However, number of seeds and 100 seed weight were reduced in two soybean cultivars. As compared with control, yield were decreased by 45% in both HKK and PSNK. It was also appeared that nitrogen contents in leaf, stem, and root of the HKK and PSNK were decreased by high-temperature treatment.

Response of Soybean Growth to Elevated $CO_{2}$ Conditions

  • The study examined the effects of $CO_2$ enrichment on growth of soybean (Glycine max). Two soybean varieties were used, Taekwang and Cheongja. The plants were grown in growth chambers with a 12-h photoperiod and a day/night temperature of $28/21^{\circ}C$ at the seedling stage and $30/23^{\circ}C$ from the flowering stage. The plants were exposed to the two elevated $CO_2$ levels of 500 and 700 ppm and the ambient level of 350 ppm. Results of the experiment showed that at the second-node trifoliate stage of the two varieties, the elevated $CO_2$ increased plant height, leaf area and dry weight. The elevated $CO_2$ also raised the photosynthetic rate of soybean as compared to the ambient level. From the beginning bloom stage to the full maturity stage of the two varieties, the elevated $CO_2$ increased plant height, leaf area, seed weight and photosynthetic rate. The stomatal conductance and transpiration rate decreased on long days relative to short days of treatment. Through the entire stages, the elevated $CO_2$ increased the water use efficiency of soybean plants because stomatal conductance and transpiration rate decreased at the elevated $CO_2$ levels relative to the ambient level.

Protective Effects of Some Plant Extracts on Lipids Contents of Rats Treated with Carbon Tetrachloride (사염화탄소를 투여한 흰쥐의 지질농도에 미치는 식물추출물의 보호효과)

  • This study was performed to investigate the possible effects of some plants protecting intact rat liver damaged by $CCl_4$. The extract of mugwort (Artemsiae capillaris), soybean sprout and pine leaf (Pinus strobus) inhibited markedly the in vitro activities of rat liver fatty acid synthase, whereas those of shiitake (Lentinus ododes), Houttuynia cortata, Acanthopanacis cortex and buckwheat leaves had less effects. Treatment with the water extract of pine leaf and soybean sprout caused a marked decrease in the $CCl_4$-induced toxicity in rat liver, judged from their effects on the levels of glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamate pyruvic transaminase(GPT) in the serum. The extract of mugwort and soybean sprout reduced markedly the content of liver microsomal peroxides induced by $CCl_4$ treatment and serum TBA values, respectively. The extract of soybean sprout decreased efficiently the content of liver triglyceride elevated by $CCl_4$ treatment. Nevertheless, the extracts did not exert the supression of hepaticmegaly induced by $CCl_4$. The results suggest that soybean sprout and pine leaf may be potential sources improved the biochemical parameters like as peroxidation value or serum GOT and GPT, although these extracts had minimal effects in the increase of liver size induced by carbon tetrachloride.

Genotypic Variation in Leaf Water Status of Soybean

  • Plant water status during growth is directly and indirectly associated with seed yield. The objective of the present study was to determine the genotypic differences in leaf water characteristics at an early growth stage of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] plants through the pressure-bomb technique. Measurements of water potential as well as relative water content (RWC) were made at the third leaf from the fully-expanded top leaf of eight different soybean genotypes grown for 31 to 35 days after field emergence. On the basis of the modified exponential model, pressure-volume (PV) curves were fitted well ($R^2$=0.92** to 0.99** for the curvi-linear region and R=0.67** to 0.96** for the linear region), indicating that a segmented model using PROC NLIN of SAS could be used effectively to estimate the leaf water characteristics. The regression analysis for the pressure-volume (PV) curve revealed genotypic variation in the solute potential at saturation (Ψ$_{s,sat}$ :-10.7 to -14.8 bar), solute potential at incipient plasmolysis (Ψ$_{s,ip}$ : -14.3 to -18.3 bar), RWC at incipient plasmolysis (RW $C_{ip}$ : 83.3 to 91.7%), high integrated turgor pressure from saturation to plasmolysis ( $_1$$^{b}$ : 0.39 to 0.81), and maximum volumetric modulus of elasticity ($\varepsilon$$_{max}$ : 150 to 445 bar).).

Correlation among Production Traits of Soybeans according to the Re-watering (재관수에 의한 대두의 물질생산 관련형질의 상호연관성)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the influence of soil moisture on the photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, leaf water content and its any correlation in soybean. Followings were achieved as a conclusion. At the soil moisture was moved from drought condition to saturation condition, the photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance and leaf water content were gradually increased on the period of re-watering treatment. The recovery of photosynthetic rate was faster than others. There were positive correlation with the photosynthetic rate and leaf water content, the stomatal conductance and leaf water content, the photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance respectively, but the correlation coefficient of photosynthetic rate and leaf water content was high.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the sensory and mechanical characteristics, moisture content, color and texture of soybean dasik prepared by additions of bamboo leaf powder. The moisture content of the samples ranged from 24.39 to 26.29%. The L values, a values and b values were decreased with increasing the bamboo leaf powder. In the mechanical evaluation, hardness, gumminess and chewiness increased with increasing amounts of bamboo leaf powder while adhesiveness decreased with increasing amounts of bamboo leaf powder. Finally, in the sensory test, the 6% bamboo leaf powder sample received the highest scores for taste, flavor and overall acceptability.
