  • To determine the horizontal and temporal distribution of firefly squid, Watasenia scintillans (W. scintillans), larvae, we conducted surveys using IKMT (mesh size: $500{\mu}m$) and CTD (SBE9plus) with Fisheries Research Vessel (FRV, TAMGU 21) in the southern part of the East Sea in summer (August) and autumn (September and November) 2015. A total of 238 larvae, ranging in mantle length (ML) from 0.6 mm to 18.5 mm, were collected at 28 stations. Abundance and larval distribution density were significantly higher in summer than in autumn during the study period. Especially, the highest density of W. scintillans was observed in the coastal waters of the East Sea from Pohang to Pyunghae where cold water masses were distributed in summer. Optimum embryo survival temperature ($6-16^{\circ}C$) 40 to 180 m depth ranges for stations which larvae were collected.

  • The distributions of heat and momentum fluxes on the surface over the oceans around the Korean Peninsula are obtained based on the surface-layer flux model of Kim and Kang (1994), and their seasonal variations are examined in the present study. the input data of the model is the oceanatmosphere data with a grid interval of 2$^{\circ}$ in longitude and latitude. The atmosphere data, which are the pressure, temperature, and specific humidity on the 1000 mb level for 3 year period of 1985∼1987, are obtained from the European center for Medium Range Forecast. The sea surface temperature (SST) is obtained from National Meteorological Center (NMC). The solar insolation and longwave radiation on the ocean surface are obtained, respectively, from the NASA satellite data and based on an emprical formula. It is shown from the net heat flux that the oceans near Korea lose heat to the atmosphere in January and October with the rates of 200∼ 400 Wm/SUP -2/ and 100 Wm/SUP -2/, respectively. But the oceans are heated by the atmosphere in April and July with about the same rate of 100 Wm/SUP -2/. The annualmean net heat flux is negative over the entire domain except the northern part of the Yellow Sea. The largest annual-mean cooling rate of about 120 Wm/SUP -2/ is appeared off the southwest of Japan. In the East Sea, the annual-mean cooling rate is 60∼90 Wm/SUP -2/ in the southern and northern parts and about 30 Wm/SUP -2/ in the middle part. The magnitude of wind stress in january is 3∼ 5 times bigger than those of the other months. As a result, the spatial pattern of annual-mean wind stress is similar to that of January. It is also shown that the annual-mean wind stress curl is negative. in the East China Sea and the South Sea,but it is positive in the northern part of the Yellow Sea.In the East sea,the stress curl is positive in the southeast and northern parts and negative in the northwestern part.

  • In this study, we analyze precise seabed geomorphology and conditions for comparing the nearshore areas of the Dongdo(East Island) and the Seodo(West Island) using detailed bathymetry data and seafloor backscattering images, in Dokdo, the East Sea. We have been obtained the detailed bathymetry data and the seafloor backscattering data. The survey range is about $250m{\times}250m$ including land of islets to the nearshore areas of the southern part of the Dongdo and the Seodo. As a result of bathymetry survey, the southern area of the Dongdo(~50 m) is deeper than the Seodo(~30 m) in the water depth. The survey areas are consist of extended bedrocks from land of the Dongdo and the Seodo. The underwater rock region of the Seodo is larger than the Dongdo. In spite of similar extended rocks features from islets, there are some distinctive seabed characteristics between the southern nearshore areas of the Dongdo and the Seodo. The Talus-shaped seafloor environment formed by gravel and underwater rocks originating from the land of the Dongdo is up to about 15 m depth. And the boundary line of between extended bedrocks and seabottom is unclear in the southern nearshore of the Dongdo. On the other hand, the southern coast of the Seodo is characterized by relatively large scale underwater rocks and evenly distributed sediments, which clearly distinguish the boundary of between extended bedrocks and seafloor. This is because the tuff layers exposed to the coastal cliffs of the Dongdo are weak against weathering and erosion. It is considered that there are more influences of the clastic sediments carried from the land of the Dongdo compared with the Seodo. Particularly, the land of the Dongdo has been undergoing construction activities. And also a highly unstable ground such as faults, joints and cracks appears in the Dongdo. In previous study, there are dissimilar features of the massive tuff breccia formations of the Dongdo and the Seodo. These conditions are thought to have influenced the different seabed characteristics in the southern nearshore areas of the Dongdo and the Seodo.

  • In order to analyse the mesh selectivity for the trawl net, the fishing experiment was carried out by the training ship Saebada belonging to the National Fisheries University, in the Southern Korea Sea and the East China Sea from June 1991 to August 1992. The trawl net used in the experiment has the trouser type of cod-end with cover net and the mesh selectivity in the cod-end part. In this report, the species of fishes caught and the catch rate for them in accordance with different mesh sizes were analysed, and the result obtained are summarized as follows: 1) 145 species of aquatic animals were caught in totally 138 times of trawl operations. 2) The number of species mostly not to escape are 28, 22, 19, 16 and 11 respectively, in each opening mesh size, 51.2mm, 70.2mm, 77.6mm, 88.0mm and 111.3mm of cod-end. 3) In view that the use of the opening mesh size above 54mm in cod-end of trawl net in Korea, it is necessary to device a counterplan against the overfishing, for the 22 species of aquatic animals mostly not to escape in the cod-end of the large mesh sizes more than 70.2mm.

  • The purpose of this study is to summarize tropical cyclone activity in 2007. 24 tropical cyclones of tropical storm (TS) intensity or higher formed in the western North Pacific and the South China Sea in 2007. The total number is less than the thirty-year (1971~2000) average frequency of 26.7. Out of twenty four tropical cyclones, 14 TCs reached typhoon (TY) intensity, while the rest 10 only reached severe tropical storm (STS) and tropical storm (TS) intensity - four STS and six TS storms. The tropical cyclone season in 2007 began in April with the formation of KONG-REY (0701). From April to May, two TCs formed in the western North Pacific in response to enhanced convective activity there. From June to July, convective activity turned inactive over the sea around the Philippines and in the South China Sea, and the subtropical high was weak over the south of Japan. MAN-YI (0704) and USAGI (0705) moved northwestward and hit Japan, bringing serious damage to the country. After August, convective activity became enhanced over the sea east of the Philippines, and the subtropical high turned strong over the sea south of Japan. Many TCs, which formed over the sea east of the Philippines and in the South China Sea, moved westward and hit China and Vietnam. PABUK (0706), WUTIP (0707), SEPAT (0708), WIPHA (0712), LEKIMA (0714) and KROSA (0715) brought serious damage to some countries including China, the Philippines and Vietnam. On the other hand, FITOW (0709) and NARI (0711) moved northward, bringing serious damage to Japan and Korea. After HAIYAN (0716), all four TCs except FAXAI (0720) formed over the sea east of $140^{\circ}E$. Three typhoons among them affected Republic of Korea, MAN-YI (0704), USAGI (0705) and NARI (0711). Particularly, NARI (0711) moved northward and made landfall at Goheng Peninsula ($34.5^{\circ}N$, $127.4^{\circ}E$) in 1815 KST 16 September. Due to $11^{th}$ typhoon NARI, strong wind and record-breaking rainfall amount was observed in Jeju Island. It was reported that the daily precipitation was 420.0 mm at Jeju city, Jeju Island on 16 September the highest daily rainfall since Jeju began keeping records in 1927. This typhoon hit the southern part of the Korean peninsula and Jeju Island. 18 people lost their lives, 14,170 people were evacuated and US$ 1.6 billion property damage was occurred.

  • The monthly mean sea levels at 48 stations located at the East and Yellow Seas coasts of Korea, Russia and Japan are processed to investigate seasonal sea level variations. The strong seasonal variations are found to be at the west coast of Korea (42.1 cm in Kunsan), in the region of the Korea strait and near the southern part of Primorye (30-33 cm); the weak ones near the southwestern coast of the Sakhalin Island (10-12 cm). Practically for the whole study area except the southwest Sakhalin, the general picture of the seasonal sea level changes is alike: the mean sea level rises in summer-autumn and falls in winter-spring. The spectral analysis of the records also shows that the seasonal oscillations strongly dominate in the sea level variations, more than 80% or total energy in the southern part of the investigated region and 50-70% in the northern part relate to these oscillations. The annal peak significantly prevails in spectra of the monthly sea levels for the majority of stations, the semiannual peak is also well manifested, but the seasonal peaks of higher order (corresponding to the periods of four and three months) reveal only at some records. The maximal amplitudes of annual component by a least square method are found at the Yellow Sea coast of Korea (20-21 cm) and also near the Japanese coast of the korea Strait (19-19 cm). The semiannual component has the maximal amplitudes (3-4 cm) near the south and southwestern coasts of the Sakhalin Island. The annual range of the sea levels is much weaker here than in the other regions, the relative investment of the seasonal oscillations in total energetic budget is only 35-40%, annual ($A_1$) and semiannual ($A_2$) components have nearly the same amplitude (seasonal factor $F=A_1/A_2=0.9-1.2$). On the basis of the present examination on sea level changes together with the results of Tomizawa et. al.(1984) the whole investigated area may be divided into 10 subregions, 2 of them are related to the Yellow Sea and Western part of the Korea Strait (Y1, Y2), the other ones (E1-E8) to the East Sea.

  • The surface circulation of northern South China Sea (hereafter SCS) for the period 1987-2005 was studied using the data of more than 500 satellite-tracked drifters and wind data from QuikSCAT. The mean flow directions in the northern SCS except the Luzon Strait (here after LS) during the periods October_March was southwestward, and $April{\sim}September$ northeastward. A strong northwestward intrusion of the Kuroshio through the LS appears during the $October{\sim}March$ period of northeasterly wind, but the intrusion became weak between April and September. When the strong intrusion occurred, the eddy kinetic energy (EKE) in the LS was $388cm^2/s^2$ which was almost 2 times higher than that during the weak-intrusion season. The volume transport of the Kuroshio in the east of the Philippines shows an inverse relationship to that of the LS. There is a six-month phase shift between the two seasonal phenomena. The volume transport in the east of the Philippines shows its peak sis-month earlier faster than that of the LS. The strong Kuroshio intrusion is found to be also related to the seasonal variation of the wind stress curl generated by the north easterly wind. The negative wind stress curl in the northern part of LS induces an anticyclonic flow, while the positive wind stress curl in the southern part of LS induces a cyclonic flow. The northwestward Kuroshio intrusion in the northern part of LS happened with larger negative wind stress curl, while the westward intrusion along $20.5^{\circ}N$ in the center of the LS occurred with weaker negative wind stress curl.

  • Acoustic surveys were conducted in the seas surround the South Korea (South Sea A, South Sea B (waters around the Jeju Island), West Sea and East Sea) in spring and autumn in 2016. First, the vertical and horizontal distributions of fisheries resources animals were examined. In most cases vertical acoustic biomass was high in surface water and mid-water layers other than South Sea A in autumn and West Sea. The highest vertical acoustic biomass showed at the depth of 70-80 m in the South Sea A in spring ($274.4m^2/nmi^2$) and the lowest one was 10-20 m in the West Sea in autumn ($0.4m^2/nmi^2$). With regard to the horizontal distributions of fisheries resources animals, in the South Sea A, the acoustic biomass was high in eastern and central part of the South Sea and the northeast of Jeju Island ($505.4-4099.1m^2/nmi^2$) in spring while it was high in eastern South Sea and the coastal water of Yeosu in autumn ($1046.9-2958.3m^2/nmi^2$). In the South Sea B, the acoustic biomass was occurred high in the southern and western seas of Jeju Island in spring ($201.0-1444.9m^2/nmi^2$) and in the southern of Jeju Island in autumn ($203.7-1440.9m^2/nmi^2$). On the other hand, the West Sea showed very low acoustic biomass in spring (average NASC of $1.1m^2/nmi^2$), yet high acoustic biomass in the vicinity of 37 N in autumn ($562.6-3764.2m^2/nmi^2$). The East Sea had high acoustic biomass in the coastal seas of Busan, Ulsan and Pohang in spring ($258.7{\sim}976.4m^2/nmi^2$) and of Goseong, Gangneung, Donghae, Pohang and Busan in autumn ($267.3-1196.3m^2/nmi^2$). During survey periods, fish schools were observed only in the South Sea A and the East Sea in spring and the West Sea in autumn. Fish schools in the South Sea A in spring were small size ($333.2{\pm}763.2m^2$) but had a strong $S_V$ ($-49.5{\pm}5.3dB$). In the East Sea, fish schools in spring had low $S_V$ ($-60.5{\pm}14.5dB$) yet had large sizes ($537.9{\pm}1111.5m^2$) and were distributed in the deep water depth ($83.5{\pm}33.5m$). Fish schools in the West Sea in autumn had strong $S_V$ ($-49.6{\pm}7.4dB$) and large sizes ($507.1{\pm}941.8m^2$). It was the first time for three seas surrounded South Korea to be conducted by acoustic surveys to understand the distribution and aggregation characteristics of fisheries resources animals. The results of this study would be beneficially used for planning a future survey combined acoustic method and mid-water trawling, particularly deciding a survey location, a time period, and a targeting water depth.

  • On July 12. 1993 at 22 : 17 local time (-9h. KST). an earthquake of surface magnitude (MS) 7.6 occurred on the west coast of the Hokkaido and small of offshore island of Okushiri in the East Sea. A major tsumani was generated and within 2 to 5 minutes, extremely large tsunami waves engulfed the Okushiri coastal area and the central west roast of the Hokkaido. This tsunami caused tremendous casualities and damage. A giant tsunami runup of more than 30 m in height was recorded. The tsunami crossed the East Sea and feeled at 27 sites of the eastern Korean coast during the survey on 17-19, July, 1993. The observed tsunami runup at southern part of the eastern Korean coast were generally weaker than the 1993 Japan Sea Central Earthquake tsunami and varied from 0.8 m to 2.6 m. The Present Paper intends to understand the propagation on this tsunami with the aid of numerical computation model andd computer graphic aided video animation.

  • In this study, we applied the teleseismic receiver function technique to determine the crustal thicknesses and ratios for 31 broadband stations of the Korean Peninsula and map out the lateral variation of Moho depth in the Peninsula. The estimated depths to Moho range from 26 to 35 km except for an island station ULL (17 km). The Moho is turned out to be deeper in the south-western part of the Peninsula and western Gyeongsang basin, and shallower in the off-shore region close to East Sea (Sea of Japan). The ratio varies from 1.69 to 1.89 with the average of 1.77, which is close to global average (1.78) in the crust.
