  • The study investigates a promising sustainable crop-insurance risk mitigation plan, namely, Group Risk Income Protection (GRIP) insurance, for the cultivation of Para rubber, a crop for which Southern Thailand constitutes over half of the national harvested area, but which recently experienced a shift in prices and yields, substantially affecting farmers. The research takes as its starting point historical data covering the 2001-2018 period for this crop's cultivation in three of Thailand's Andaman South Coast provinces - Trang, Krabi, and Phangnga. The results indicate that, from a relatively high base in 2001, Trang's yields dropped sharply before a more gradual decline (apparently still ongoing), whereas those for Krabi and Phangnga followed a smoother downward trajectory throughout the period. Meanwhile, prices everywhere rose steadily before falling from 2011 onwards - a decrease that shows no signs of abating. The yield/price relationship was negative for one province and slightly positive for the other provinces. Furthermore, all provinces' Para rubber income initially grew continually but fell after 2011, with this trend seemingly persisting to this day. The paper's findings suggest that, after early moves to entrench GRIP insurance, it looks set to become a feasible option for Para rubber, making policy agreement details an interesting subject for subsequent investigations.

  • Little is known about the movements of finless porpoises Neophocaena asiaeorientalis and their relationship with sea surface temperature (SST). A female finless porpoise that was stranded alive on the shore at Busan was rehabilitated for 16 months at the Sea Life Busan Aquarium. The porpoise was released off Geoje Island with a satellite tag on her mid-ridge and tracking data were received for 7 days. The porpoise moved directly to the southern shore of Gadeok Island, where an earlier study reported that finless porpoises were most abundant around the island. The tracking route revealed two other potential primary habitats. The porpoise moved to the middle of the east coast of the Korean Peninsula at Uljin, beyond the distribution boundary known from earlier studies. Satellite infrared images detected a cold water mass off the Uljin coast and the tracking route showed that the porpoise avoided this low-temperature area.

  • In order to predict the sailing performance of a LNGC during actual operation, it is necessary to consider not only the information about resistance, maneuverability etc. but also the information such as sea route and sailing scenario etc., comprehensively. In this paper, we propose a new approach to conduct the sailing simulation of a LNGC without full scale measurement data. Latitude, longitude, sea route, speed over ground, time in UTC obtained from AIS data are substituted for the measured data. By combining the model test results, design information, and AIS data, prediction of sailing performance is conducted from the coast of southern Taiwan to the coast of Madagascar. The simulation is verified by comparing the calculated time histories of RPM and power with those of measured RPM and power.

  • This study aimed to classify typhoons using a more objective index based on strong winds and precipitation data from 1904 to 2019 obtained from the Automated Surface Observing System. The Typhoon Type Index (TTI) was calculated by classifying wind speed and precipitation of each typhoon, thereby revealing the rate and characteristics of the wind-type and rain-type typhoons. In addition, the top 10 typhoons for property damage were analyzed by dividing them into three types according to the typhoon course. The analysis showed that typhoons of type 1, heading north to the west coast, were most clearly affected by the wind. In addition, the impact of the wind was reduced and the impact of rain increased in the order of typhoon type 2 that landed on the southern coast and type 6 that affected the Korean Peninsula through China.

  • For the purpose of examining the distribution of organic matter in the nearshore surface sediments of Korea, organic carbon, nitrogen, ignition loss, chemical oxygen demand, phaeopigment and total sulphide for 117 surface sediments were measured and analyzed in February, 1993. Organic carbon and nitrogen contents ranged from $0.03\%\;to\;5.41\%$ (average $1.08\%$) and from $0.01\%\;to\;0.44\%$ (average $0.18\%$), respectively. The highest contents with the average $2.18\%$ organic carbon and $0.23\%$ nitrogen were found in the eastern part of the southern coast, while the lowest contents with the average $0.17\%$ organic carbon and $0.03\%$ nitrogen in Kunsan coastal area covering from Kum river to Dongjin river. The principal component analysis using all measured data distinguished the western coast from the eastern part of the southern coast clearly according to organic matter contents, that is, the degree of eutrophication in the sediments. Pusan harbor and the mouth of Masan Bay had high C/N ratio that might be resulted from the input of terrestrial sewage and industrial wastewater. A high concentration of total sulphide distinguished the surface sediment of Masan Bay from that of other areas.

  • Seasonal variation in species composition and abundance of shallow water fish off Yongwon, Jinhae in the southern coast of Korea was determined by the analysis of monthly samples collected by a beach seine from January to December, 1998. Among 54 species identified, the resident species such as Favonigobius gymnauchen, Chaenogobius laevis, Pholis nebulosa and juvenile Hyporhamphus intermedius were predominated in abundance. The temporal species such as Sardinella zunasi, Leiognathus nuchalis and Takifugu niphobles were collected between April and September. Mean abundance (322 individuals/1000 $m^2$ or 806 g/1000 $m^2$) was higher than that in the shallow sand surf zone of Teachon, but lower than that in the shallow mud area of Chonsu Bay in the western coast of Korea. A large number of H. intermedius were collected in cold months between November and January. The dominant resident species began to be collected from february, and the number of species and biomass were increased until July. A small number of temporal species were collected and subsequently the abundance was low from August to October when high abundance was expected as in the other shallow waters by recruitment of a large number of juveniles of temporal species. The low abundance in these warm months seemed to be related to the water quality by weak water circulation in this shallow mud area.

  • Since the original description of new species, Eumicrotremus jindoensis, we confirmed the first occurrence of E. jindoensis based on a single specimen (22.3 mm SL) caught by inshore stow net at the coastal waters of Boryeong of Korea. However, our specimen slightly differed from type specimens in having more vertebrae (26 vs. 21~24), longer snout (17.4% vs. 8.1~9.1%), longer preanus length (67.5% vs. 58.0~58.3%) and shorter second dorsal fin base (15.3% vs. 20.2~20.8%). Comparing with mtDNA COI and Cytb sequences, we could not find any differences in mtDNA Cytb sequences between our specimen and type specimens, which suggest that those morphological differences may belong to local variation by habitat and environmental condition between off Jindo Island and off Boryeong in Korea. Eumicrotremus uenoi is known from the southern sea of Korea narrowly (Busan, Tongyeong, and Jeju Island), the other congeneric species (E. asperrimus, E. pacificus, and E. taranetzi) from only the eastern sea of Korea, but E. jindoensis from the central coast to southern coast of western Korea.

  • Recently, Korean people are more interested in leisure time as the Korean economy has enjoyed the economic growth on a continual basis. Along with it, the disabled people's demand for enjoying the beach is growing. To meet the disabled people's demand for enjoy the beaches, it is important to prepare the convenient facilities where the disabled people in the wheel chair can use comfortably, including the handicapped parking area, toilet for the disabled, shower stall room and am bathhouse. On the backdrop of this, the study has been made on the obstacles which keep the disabled people from using the convenient facilities installed on 12 beaches in the southern coat of Korea from the perspective of barrier free design. This study showed that half of the beaches in question did not have the handicapped parking places. The parking space was also so narrow that it was difficult for handicapped people to access the parking lot with their vehicles. There were also 3 beaches which did not have the toilet for the disabled. Even the beaches which have the toilet for the disabled, the size of entrance door and floor space was so narrow and there were a lot of physical obstacles such as no handles for the disabled people that it was really hard for the disabled people in wheelchair to use them.

  • Tsunamis generated by of the 1992 Flores Island Earthquake in Indonesia caused tremendous casualties and damages. This tsunami event was hindcasted via numerical tsunami models. Initial conditions were taken from fault parameters from Havard CMT (Centroid Moment Tensor) solution and additional subaqueous slump consideration at the Inner Hading Bay and Riang Krok, Leworahang coasts. The computed results showed general agreements with observations made by the International Tsunami Survey Group. Subsequently a runup model was developed to investigate catastrophic runup at southern shore of the Babi Island with fine grid resolution of 50 m. Computed results were recorded to construct rendered images for video animation. The computer-graphic aided video animation showed a remarkable reproduction of tsunami propagation and runup at southern coast of the Babi Island.

  • When the GPS system was come to the operation, the U.S Coast Guard initiated development of differential GPS system based on a marine radiobeacon. It has rapidly been spread out to many countries. DGPS equals to P(Y) code in a positioning accuracy. USA has recently determined to expand the coverage of DGPS to inland in order to install a nationwide DGPS chain. Korea is under processing for improving the DGPS as a nationwide positioning system. Before expanding the service area inside Korea, we need to verify the relation between the field strength and DGPS accuracy for the service area. The Japanese DGPS data is received in the southern Part of the Korean peninsula. The Korean DGPS was not a complete system, so we selected the Japanese DGPS data as a model for the study. This paper investigate accuracy and reliability characteristics of RBN/DGPS over the effective service area. Through the experimental and simulation study, we obtained the reliable and stable positioning accuracy in the southern part of the Korean peninsula. In addition, the characteristics of RBN/DGPS were examined in the land over the effective coverage from Japan. The results would be a basic reference to research the RBN/NDGPS in Korea.
