This study aims to reveal the relationship between growth of young sea bass and environmental variables in two adjacent eelgrass beds. Fishes were collected from Gamak Bay (GB) and Yeoja Bay (YB) on the southern coast of Korea from February 2006 to February 2007 using a dragnet (15 m in length and 3 m in width). During the study period, a total of 367 individuals of young sea bass Lateolabrax japonicus were collected from GB (171 inds.) and YB (196 inds.). Significant differences were observed in the occurrence periods and growth patterns of young sea bass, as well as in environmental variables between GB and YB. Young sea bass were collected from April to December in GB, but from April to July in YB. These differences may be associated with differences in eelgrass density, leaf width, and zooplankton density between GB and YB.

This study used a multi-frequency acoustic method to assess the density and spatial distribution of dominant zooplankton, euphausiids and copepods, which are representative species of the zooplankton immigrating the sea around Republic of Korea. Acoustic surveys were carried out in the East Sea and South Sea from June 16 to 29, 2017, using the research vessel Tamgu 20th from the National Institute of Fisheries Science. From the results of the acoustic survey, the distribution of euphausiids was relatively higher in the East Sea than in the South Sea. Additionally, although the distribution of copepods was low in all areas, they were abundant in certain areas in the East Sea and the southern area of the Jeju Sea. Euphausiid and copepod density was estimated to be 1.2 g/m2 (CV = 19.1%) and 2.8 g/m2 (CV = 23.5%), respectively.
In this study, we analyze precise seabed geomorphology and conditions for comparing the nearshore areas of the Dongdo(East Island) and the Seodo(West Island) using detailed bathymetry data and seafloor backscattering images, in Dokdo, the East Sea. We have been obtained the detailed bathymetry data and the seafloor backscattering data. The survey range is about $250m{\times}250m$ including land of islets to the nearshore areas of the southern part of the Dongdo and the Seodo. As a result of bathymetry survey, the southern area of the Dongdo(~50 m) is deeper than the Seodo(~30 m) in the water depth. The survey areas are consist of extended bedrocks from land of the Dongdo and the Seodo. The underwater rock region of the Seodo is larger than the Dongdo. In spite of similar extended rocks features from islets, there are some distinctive seabed characteristics between the southern nearshore areas of the Dongdo and the Seodo. The Talus-shaped seafloor environment formed by gravel and underwater rocks originating from the land of the Dongdo is up to about 15 m depth. And the boundary line of between extended bedrocks and seabottom is unclear in the southern nearshore of the Dongdo. On the other hand, the southern coast of the Seodo is characterized by relatively large scale underwater rocks and evenly distributed sediments, which clearly distinguish the boundary of between extended bedrocks and seafloor. This is because the tuff layers exposed to the coastal cliffs of the Dongdo are weak against weathering and erosion. It is considered that there are more influences of the clastic sediments carried from the land of the Dongdo compared with the Seodo. Particularly, the land of the Dongdo has been undergoing construction activities. And also a highly unstable ground such as faults, joints and cracks appears in the Dongdo. In previous study, there are dissimilar features of the massive tuff breccia formations of the Dongdo and the Seodo. These conditions are thought to have influenced the different seabed characteristics in the southern nearshore areas of the Dongdo and the Seodo.
We investigated species composition and spatial distribution of the euphausiid community in the Yellow Sea and identified the relationship with environmental factors (temperature, salinity, chlorophyll $\alpha$, nitrate, phosphate, and silicate) using bimonthly data from June, 1997 to April, 1998. The environment varied during the sampling period. In warm seasons, thermocline was well developed rendering lower temperature and higher salinity and nutrient concentrations in the bottom layer. During cold seasons the water column was well mixed and no such vertical stratification was noted. Horizontal distribution of temperature, however, differed slightly between near-coast and offshore areas because of the shallow depth of the Yellow Sea, and between southern and northern areas because of the intrusion of water masses such as Yellow Sea Warm Current and Changjiang River Diluted Water. Four euphausiid species were identified: Euphausia pacifica, E. sanzoi, Pseudeuphausia sp. and Stylocheron affine. E. sanzoi and S. affine were collected, just one juvenile each, from the southern area in June and December, respectively. Pseudeuphausia sp. were collected in the eastern area all the year round except June. E. pacifica occurred at the whole study area and were the predominant species, representing at least 97.6% of the euphausiid abundance. Further, the distribution pattern of the species was varied in regards to developmental stages (adult, furcilia, calyptopis, egg). From spring to fall, E. pacifica adults were abundant in the central area where the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water prevailed. Furcilia and calyptopis extended their distribution into nearly all the study area during the same period. From late fall to winter, adults were found at the near-coastal are a with similar pattern for furcilia and calyptopis. The distribution pattern of E. pacifica was consistent regarding temperature, salinity, and three nutrients during the sampling period, whereas chlorophyll $\alpha$ showed a different pattern according to the developmental stages. The nutrients should indirectly affect via chlorophyll $\alpha$ and phytoplankton concentration. With respect to these results, we presented a scenario about how the environmental factors along with the water current affect the distribution of E. pacifica in the Yellow Sea.
Effect of physical processes on the surface distributions of chlorophyll-a and nutrients was investigated in the southern sea of Korea during summer season. The northwestern area of Cheju Island had higher concentrations of the chlorophyll-a and nutrients than its southeastern area. A nutrient-rich patch was observed in the western area of Cheju Island and the northern area of $34^{\circ}N$ respectively. It seems that the patch in the western area of Cheju Island is formed by horizontal extension of the low-saline Coastal Water of China Contiental(CWCC), while the patch in the northern area of $34^{\circ}N$ by vertical mixing. Also, the high chlorophyll-a in the vicinity of Cheju Island appears to be ascribed to sufficient supply of nutrient from bottom water by coastal upwelling.
As a standard water clarity variable, the vertical underwater visibility, called Secchi depth, is estimated with ocean color satellite data. In the present study, Moderate Resolvtion Imaging Spectradiometer (MODIS) data are used to measure the Secchi depth which is a useful indicator of ocean transparency for estimating the water quality and productivity. To estimate the Secchi depth $Z_v$, the empirical regression model is developed based on the satellite optical data and in-situ data. In the previous study, a semi-analytical algorithm for estimating $Z_v$ was developed and validated for Case 1 and 2 waters in both coastal and oceanic waters using extensive sets of satellite and in-situ data. The algorithm uses the vertical diffuse attenuation coefficient, $K_d$($m^{-1}$) and the beam attenuation coefficient, c($m^{-1}$) obtained from satellite ocean color data to estimate $Z_v$. In this study, the semi-analytical algorithm is validated using temporal MODIS data and in-situ data over the Yellow, Southern and East Seas including Case 1 and 2 waters. Using total 156 matching data, MODIS $Z_v$ data showed about 3.6m RMSE value and 1.7m bias value. The $Z_v$ values of the East Sea and Southern Sea showed higher RMSE than the Yellow Sea. Although the semi-analytical algorithm used the fixed coupling constant (= 6.0) transformed from Inherent Optical Properties (IOP) and Apparent Optical Properties (AOP) to Secchi depth, various coupling constants are needed for different sea types and water depth for the optimum estimation of $Z_v$.
A 450 m-long sediment section was recovered from Hole U1359D located at the eastern levee of the Jussieau submarine channel on the Wilkes Land continental rise (East Antarctica) during IODP Expedition 318. The age model for Hole U1359D was established by paleomagnetic stratigraphy and biostratigraphy, and the ages of core-top and core-bottom were estimated to be about 5 Ma and 13 Ma, respectively. Biogenic opal content during this period varied between 3% and 60%. In the Southern Ocean, high biogenic opal content generally represents warm climate characterized by the increased light availability due to the decrease of sea-ice distribution. The surface water productivity change in terms of biogenic opal content at about 10.2 Ma in the Wilkes Land continental rise was related to the development of Northern Component Water. After about 10.2 Ma, more production of Northern Component Water in the North Atlantic caused to increase heat transport to the Southern Ocean, resulting in the enhanced diatom production. Miocene isotope events (Mi4~Mi7), which are intermittent cooling intervals during the Miocene, appeared to be correlated to the low biogenic opal contents, but further refinement was required for precise correlation. Biogenic opal content decreased abruptly during 6 Ma to 5.5 Ma, which most likely corresponds to the Messinian salinity crisis. Short-term variation of biogenic opal content was related to the extent of sea-ice distribution associated with the location of Antarctic Polar Front that was controlled by glacial-interglacial paleoclimate change, although more precise dating and correlation will be necessary. Diatom production in the Wilkes Land continental rise increased during the interglacial periods because of the reduced sea-ice distribution and the southward movement of Antarctic Polar Front.
To obtain the basic information on culture conditions for the larvae of Saxidomus purpuratus, experiments were conducted on the population from southern coast for (1) the success in fertilization and development from artificial fertilization among different months of a year, (2) the viability of sperms after exposure to seawater, (3) and the effects of temperature, salinity, and food organism on the survival and growth of larvae. Gametes obtained from dissection showed high rate of fertilization at all months. But the rate of development was higher only May-July. Developmental success seemed to be related with the quality of eggs at the time of fertilization. Developmental times for 2-cell, 4-cell, 8-cell, blastula, trochophore larva, and veliger larva at 20$^{\circ}C$ were 1.5, 2, 4, 18, 24, and 32 hr, respectively. Sperms could survive for more than 8 hr, however, actively swimming sperms could be found within 1 hr after exposure to seawater. It is recommended that sperms should be used for fertilization as soon as possible when they are exposed to seawater. At temperature of 35$^{\circ}C$, all the larvae died during 48 hr. Larval survival decreased when salinity was either lower than 20 psu or higher than 40 psu, and was 0% when salinity was 10 psu. Optimal range of temperature and salinity for rearing larvae of S. purpuratus were 20-25$^{\circ}C$ and 20-40 psu, respectively. Larvae grew from 111.5 to 235.3 ${\mu}$m during 21 days. Larvae fed mixed diets grew faster than unialgal diets. The fastest growth was observed when larvae were fed on the mixture of Isochrysis galbana and Nannochloris oculata.

This study evaluated the impact of antimicrobial resistant bacteria produced by inland pollution sources on coastal areas, and investigates antimicrobial resistance profiles of bacteria isolated from marine filter feeders. A total of 107 shellfish (short-necked clams Ruditapes philippinarum, ark shells Scapharca broughtonii, and oysters Crassostrea gigas) were collected from the southern coast of Korea, from which 204 Escherichia coli strains were isolated. The antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of isolated strains were analyzed for 15 antimicrobial agents used in Korea for clinical or veterinary therapy. Antimicrobial resistance was present in 44.6% of E. coli isolates against at least one antimicrobial agent. The rate of antimicrobial resistance in the Narodo area was higher than isolates from the Gangjinman area and Kamak Bay. E. coli isolates had a higher rate of resistance against: tetracycline (29.9%), streptomycin (25.5%), and trimethoprim (14.2%). Of 204 isolates, 29 (14.2%) were resistant to multiple antimicrobial agents.
Anchovy spawn from the end of May to mid-October, when the water temperature is $14.8-27.2\;^{\circ}C$ and the salinity is 26.0-33.6 psu. The main spawning season is between July to August, when the water temperature is $21.7-27.2\;^{\circ}C$ and the salinity is between 26.0-32.2 psu. The main spawning grounds of anchovy are coastal areas shallower than 50 m around the islands located in the Jeju Strait. Anchovy larvae are distributed near the fronts between Chuja-do, Jangsu-do, Yeoseo-do, and the open sea rather than in the spawning grounds. Anchovy eggs and larvae density increased in accordance with the high level of $Chlorophyll-{\alpha}$ during the summer season (July-August). In terms of the suspended sediment (SS) levels along the northern coast of the Jeju Strait, high densities of anchovy eggs (12.0-18.0 mg/L) were observed, mainly in the area affected by the coastal waters of the southern sea with high SS levels, while larvae (10.0-19.0 mg/L) tended to be distributed over a wide area with high SS levels, including the open sea. In terms of the dissolved oxygen (DO) content, eggs (5.4-6.8 mg/L) were observed in coastal areas with a high DO content, while larvae (4.2-6.4 mg/L) were distributed widely in areas with a relatively low DO content, from the southern coast to the open sea.
