  • The objectives of this article are to identify the current status of agricultural infrastructure in North Korea and to suggest some cooperation measures among South and North Koreas and international agencies in order to develop the North Korea's agricultural infrastructure. The area of cultivated land in North Korea is 1,992 thousand ha (paddy field: 585 thousand ha: upland: 1,407 thousand ha) in 1997. Major water use facilities in North Korea are 1,900 reservoirs (included 100 big dams), 36,400 irrigation pumping stations, 1,600 drainage pumping stations, and 14'a,000 wells. In addition, there is 'two thousand Ri canal construction project' linking the rivers of Aprok, Daeryong, Daedong, Jaeryong, and Yesong. The unit of paddy land consolidation is about 1 ha which is regarded as rational for agricultural mechanization. The project of 'Darak' upland construction to create small size farmland, which has been carried out since 1976 has been unsuccessful due to the shortage of construction equipment. The area of farmland created by reclamation by 1995 is only 75 thousand ha although the potential project area is at)out 320 thousand ha along the western coast. It is due to the fact that civil engineering technologies and equipments are old and investment funds are insufficient. These are a few suggested areas of cooperation among South and North Korea and international agencies in order to improve North Korea's agricultural infrastructure : i) see land reclamation and land consolidation projects to increase paddy fields for rice production; ii) rehabilitation project in farm land areas devastated by flood; and iii) agricultural water development project which including diagnosing and rehabilitating irrigation and drainage facilities.

  • Gold contents with major and trace elements have been determined in 67 fresh igneous and altered wall rocks in the acid-sulfate alteration zone of the Ogmaesan-Seongsan pyrophyllite deposits in the Haenam area of the south-western part of Korean peninsula. The results are as follows; (1) Li contents have a tendency to show high value in dickite and altered rocks with dickite, while As, Mo and Sb contents have tendencies to show high values in alunite vein and silicified zone. F contents are higher in the altered rocks compared to fresh rocks. (2) Gold contents are enriched in alunite vein and silicified zone of the Seongsan deposit, but depleted in dickite and altered rock with dickite. Gold contents are especially concentrated in fault or conjunction area of two faults. (3) Gold contents are higher values in the mineral assemblages of alunite-quartz-pyrite and alteration zone of the Seongsan deposit among the studied deposits. (4) Gold contents in samples of silicified zones tend to show positive correlations with Ag, As, Co, Hg, Sb and V content, but negative correlations with Y and Zr contents, while on the other gold contents of silicified tuffs tend to show positive correlations with Hg and Sb contents. Therefore it is important to survey alunite vein and silicified zone at the conjunction of faults, and to analyze pathfinder elements such as Ag, As, Hg and Sb for geological and geochemical exploration of gold in the studied deposits.

  • Comprehensive data collection was carried out between 2001-2006 to investigate the concentration levels of chlorophyll-a, nutrients (DIN and DIP), and COD for surface waters of Korean coastal areas. A statistical analysis of these parameters was carried out on the basis of the frequency distribution of their concentration. Furthermore, the numeric grading for chlorophyll-a, DIN, DIP, and COD concentrations were derived statistically from the normalized frequency distribution of log-transformed data. The statistical grading clearly reflects the water quality characteristics of three Korean coastal water bodies (Western, Southern and Eastern coastal zones), which indicate common environmental and ecological characteristics. So, this study could provide useful information to set up the guideline for water quality assessment of Korean coasts.

  • The altitudinal potential source contribution function (PSCFa) method was developed by considering topography and height of back trajectories. The PSCFa calculated on the contributions of trans-boundary transport to the hourly mean concentrations of aerosol optical depth (AOD) of the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) in the Distributed Regional Aerosol Gridded Observation Networks (DRAGON) KORea-US Air Quality (KORUS-AQ) campaign from March 31 to July 1 in 2016. Eastern China ($33^{\circ}N{\sim}35^{\circ}N$ and $119^{\circ}E{\sim}121^{\circ}E$) can be the major source of trans-boundary pollution to the western area in South Korea resulted from PSCFa (0~700 m). In this study, AOD by Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) was compared to verify the source regions. Regionally, the effects of the long-range transport of pollutants from the eastern China on air quality in south Korea have become more significant over this period.

  • Objective: To understand the domestication and spread of horses in history, genetic information is essential. However, mitogenetic traits of ancient or medieval horses have yet to be comprehensively revealed, especially for East Asia. This study thus set out to reveal the maternal lineage of skeletal horse remains retrieved from a 15th century archaeological site (Gongpyeongdong) at Old Seoul City in South Korea. Methods: We extracted DNA from the femur of Equus caballus (SNU-A001) from Joseon period Gongpyeongdong site. Mitochondrial (mt) DNA (HRS 15128-16116) of E. caballus was amplified by polymerase chain reaction. Cloning and sequencing were conducted for the mtDNA amplicons. The sequencing results were analyzed by NCBI/BLAST and phylogenetic tool of MEGA7 software. Results: By means of mtDNA cytochrome b and D-loop analysis, we found that the 15th century Korean horse belonged to haplogroup Q representing those horses that have historically been raised widely in East Asia. Conclusion: The horse is unique among domesticated animals for the remarkable impact it has on human civilization in terms of transportation and trade. Utilizing the Joseon-period horse remains, we can obtain clues to reveal the genetic traits of Korean horse that existed before the introduction of Western horses.

  • To estimate the effects of limitation nutrients for phytoplankton growth and its influences on short-term variations of a winter phytoplankton community structure, we investigated the abiotic and biotic factors of surface and bottom waters at 20 stations of inner and offshore areas from 6 to 7 February in Gwangyang Bay, Korea. Also, several algal bio-assay studies were conducted to identify any additional nutrient effects on phytoplankton assemblage using surface water for the assay. The dominant species in the bay was diatom Skeletonema costatum, which occupied more than 70% of total species in most stations (St.1-16) of the inner bay. According to a cluster and multidimensional scaling (MDS) analysis based on phytoplankton community data from each station, the bay was divided into three groups. The first group included stations from the south-western parts of Myodo lsland, which can be characterized as a semien-closed eutrophic area with high phytoplankton abundance. The second group included most stations from the north-eastern part of Myodo lsland, influenced indirectly by surface water currents from offshore of the bay. The standing phytoplankton crops were lower than those of the first group. The other cluster was restricted to samples collected from offshore of the bay. In the bay, silicon (Si) and phosphorus (P) were not a major limiting factor for phytoplankton production. However, since the DIN: DIP and DSi: DIN ratios clearly demonstrated that there were potential stoichiometric N limitations, nitrogen (N) was considered as a limiting factor. Based on the algal bio-assay, in vivo fluorescence values in N (+) added experiments were higher compared to control and P added experiments. Our results suggested that nitrogen may act as one of the most important factors in controlling primary production during winter in Gwangyang Bay.

  • The last half of the twentieth century brought many new opportunities and challenges to the traditional South Korean family. One area of change that challenges the traditional South Korean family is the availability of new food sources, specifically the introduction of commercial restaurants that offer new types of food in untraditional settings. This research investigated the perceptions of South Korean mothers'(n = 104) regarding the patronage of quick service style restaurants by their children through the use of Q sort methodology. The results showed that even though children do influence the decision making process when determining where to eat away from home, Korean mothers still play a very prominent role in planning the family's food consumption. While Western food styles and practices can provide a variety of food selections and service styles, care should be taken not to over utilize the quick service restaurants' in place of traditional foods.

  • In this study, the changes of the sunshine environment due to the construction of buildings were analyzed by season. Using a geographic information system (GIS) data, the topography and the buildings were constructed around Pukyong National University (PKNU) in Busan. The numerical model was performed for a week in each season, before and after the construction of buildings. Even before the construction of the high-rise building complex, the area of sunshine block is wide due to the apartment complex located in the southeast of the PKNU campus and the mountain in the south. After the construction, the sunshine-blocked area became wider after the sunrise and before the sunset. The area of sunshine block after 1 hour at sunrise increased by 1.60%, 1.50%, 1.58% and 1.36% in the vernal equinox, summer solstice, autumnal equinox and winter solstice, respectively. The building complex in the east (south) of the PKNU campus made shadow in more than 1,000 m (750 m) toward the west (east) just before the sunrise (sunset). Especially, the sunshine duration in PKNU campus decreased by 46.61%, 22.75%, 58.56%, and 11.31% in the vernal equinox, summer solstice, autumnal equinox and winter solstice, respectively. The analysis of the sunshine duration for a dormitory building showed that the construction of the building complex in the south of the PKNU campus reduced the sunshine area of the western (southern) wall of the dormitory by 30.91% (49.45%) for a winter week.

  • A field survey for dinoflagellate cysts was carried out from May 2000 to November 2002 for the Southwest Sea of Korea. A total dinoflagellate cysts identified were 33 species, which belonged to 17 genera, 31 species, and 2 unidentified species. A cysts density were 16-1,501 cysts-gdry$^{-1}$. The dominant species of dinoflagellate cysts in the Southwestern Sea of Korea were Spiniferites bulloideus and Scrippsiella trochoidea, which are autotrophic species. To investigate the environmental characteristics of the Southwestern Sea of Korea using the dinoflagellate cysts, a principal component analysis (PCA) was conducted using the data collected from a total of 51 stations. From the score distribution map by the PCA, the Southwestern Sea of Korea was largely divided into three regions according to the first primary component and the second primary component. In other words, Group 1 was the western sea area of Mokpo and Jindo, Group 2 was the outer sea area of the South Sea, and Group 3 was the coastal areas of the South Sea around the Archipelago. It was found that this division of sea area was influenced by effects of the sea environment of the coastal areas of Korea. The coastal areas of Mokpo and Jindo that belong to Group 1 were affected by the cold Yellow Sea water. The outer sea area of the central parts of the South Sea that belong to Group 2, which is the boundary between the Southern coastal water of Korea and the Tsushima warm water, was subject to the formation of temperature fronts throughout the year, while Group 3 was affected by the coastal waters of Korea. It was also found that this division was in close relationship with the distribution of sediment facies in the bottom layer. From the above results, the environmental factors that influence the cyst distribution in he Southwestern Sea of Korea were found to include the eutrophication status of the sea area, the physical characteristics of the sea environment such as the flow of sea current and fronts, the sediment facies in the bottom layer, and the appearance volume of motile cells.
