The Qinling-Dabie-Sulu-Hongseong-Odesan collision belt was formed by the collision between the North China and South China Cratons during late Permian to Triassic. During the collision, Triassic post-collision igneous rocks regionally intruded in the Qinling and the Hongseong-Odesan collision belts which represent the western and eastern ends of the collision belt, respectively. However, no and minor Triassic post-collision igneous activities occur in the Dabie and Sulu belts respectively. The peak metamorphic pressure conditions along the Qinling-Dabie-Sulu-Hongseong-Odesan belt indicate that the slab break-off occurred at the depth of ultra-high pressure (UHP) metamorphic condition in the Dabie and Sulu belts and at the depths of high pressure (HP) or high pressure granulite (HPG) metamorphic condition in the Qinling and Hongseong-Odesan belts. In the Dabie and Sulu belts the heat supply from the asthenospheric mantle through the gab formed by slab break-off could not cause an extensive melting in the lower continental crust and lithospheric mantle directly below it due to the very deep depth of slab break-off. On the other hand, in the Qinling and Hongseong-Odesan belts, shallower slab break-off caused the emplacement of regional post collision igneous rocks. The post-collision igneous rocks occur in the area to the north of the Mianlu Suture zone in the western Qinling belt and crop out continuously eastwards into the areas to the north of the Shangdan Suture zone in the eastern Qinling belt through the areas within the South Qinling block. This distribution pattern of post collision igneous rocks suggests that the Triassic collision belt in the Mianleu Suture zone may be extended into the Shangdan Suture zone after passing through the South Qinling block instead into the boundary between the South Qinling block and the South China Craton.

This study investigates to detect Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and land cover change after tide embankment construction using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) Thermal Infrared (TIR) band data at Shihwa Lake and surrounding area. SST measurement is important for studies of both the structure of the ocean and as the thermal boundary between the ocean and the atmosphere. Since 1970s, the derivation of SST by satellite remote sensing (RS) has been applied to earth surface using Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and Landsat TM. However, AVHRR has restriction in deriving SST in the area whose shoreline is complicated like western coast in South Korea because of coarse spatial resolution. The TIR band of TM images can be used to detect SST change whose shoreline is complicated and narrow like the study site. Thus, multi-temporal TM images were used for SST change detection in this study.
The effect of artificial changes in geographical features on local wind was analyzed at the construction site of bridge and fill-up bank in the southern part of Haui-do. Geographic Information System (GIS) data and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model were used in this study. Three-dimensional numerical topography based on the GIS data for the target area was constructed for the surface boundary input data of the CFD model. The wind observations at an Automatic Weather Station (AWS) located in Haui-do were used to set-up the model inflows. The seasonal simulations were conducted. The differences in surface wind speed between after and before artificial changes in geographical features were analyzed. The surface wind speed decreases 5 to 20% at the south-western part and below 2% of the spatial average for salt field. There was also marked the effect of artificial changes in geographical features on local wind in the westerly wind case for the target area.
Aerological observation at Heuksando located in south-western part of Koran Peninsula has been started at 1 June 2003. In order to clarify the improvement of meteorological prediction quality. it is necessary to compare between aerological data observed at Gawngju and Heuksando and to make clear the influence of Heuksando data assimilation. Therefore numerical simulations were carried out with High resolution meterological prediction system based on MM5(The 5th Generation Mesoscale Model). The pattern of wind and temperature field observed at Heuksando and Gwangju are different due to land surface friction End Sensible heat flux at surface and the wind field Simulated With Gwangju and Heuksando aerological data agree well with observation wind field. Although the amount of precipitation in these experiments is underestimated. the area and starting time of precipitation around Honam province in case with Heuksando data is more reliable that without the data.

This study was conducted to understand the relationships between fish and zooplankton of distribution in the coastal waters of the East Sea from May to August 2016 using hydroacoustic. To distinguish between fish and zooplankton, we used the time varied threshold (TVT) method at the frequency of 120 kHz. As a result, the mean nautical area scattering coefficient (NASC) of fish was highest at $913m^2/n.mile^2$ in June and lowest at $315m^2/n.mile^2$ in July. The mean NASC of zooplankton was highest at $247m^2/n.mile^2$ in May and lowest at $70m^2/n.mile^2$ in July. The mean NASC of fish and zooplankton showed a significant difference (P < 0.05) with high correlation ($R^2=0.84$). In addition, there was no significant difference in the mean NASC of fishes and zooplankton by depth (t-test, person correction = -0.17, p > 0.05).
A faunal study on the marine decapods of Gogunsan Islands located in the western part of South Korea was performed during the period from August 3 to August 5 in 2003. As a result of the present study, a total 42 species in 17 families (Macrura: four species in two families, Anomura: nine species in four families, Brachyura: 29 species in 11 families) were identified. Of these, two species of shrimp, Athanas sp. and Alpheus sp., are new to Korea. Including these two species, total 20 species in 10 families are newly known to Gogunsan Islands. Fifty two species in 19 families were previously known to occur in this area. Therefore, a total 72 species in 24 families of decapods are now known to occur in Gogunsan Islands. Of the species collected in the present study, Palaemon (Palaemon) serrifer (Stimpson, 1860) in shrimps, Macrophthalmus japonicus De Haan, 1835 living at mud area and Scopimera globosa De Haan, 1835 at sand beach in crabs, and Hapalogaster dentata (De Haan, 1849) in hermits crab were most dominant.
Distribution, bathymetry and textural parameters of the bottom sediment deposited between Geoje and Namhae Islands were studied to understand the depositional environment of the area. The study area is divided into three different provinces. Except for the Gwangyang Bay and Changseon Channel, mud dominates in the western part whereas sandy mud and muddy sand prevail in the southeastern part including the eastern area of the Yogji Island. The relict sediment is located in the eastern part of the area. Generally, the Holocene sediment, located in the northern part of the area, is considered to be transported and deposited by a pelagic suspension mode. Influence of strong tidal currents results in some depressions in the vicinity of Changseon Island and the eastern part of the Yogji Island, The Tsushima Warm Current is supposed to affect the southern part of the area. The two parallels sand ridges lying in the southeastern part of the area are covered with very thin Holocene mud. This seems to be caused by the winnowing effect of the current. The similarity between the two directions of the current and the ridges encourages this idea. The boundary between the Holocene and relict sediment, however, lies further south the ridges.
As an attempt to determine if the morphological differences between the southern and western oysters are due simply to the local ecological factors or are based on their fundamental genetic nature, oyster seeds produced in 1968 at Tong-Young, Ye-Chun, and Ko-Hung on the south coast and at Kan-Wol-Do on the west coast were cross-transplanted during May of 1969 to compare their growth. The spats were placed in plastic baskets which permitted free water flow through and the baskets hung from a wooden rack located at a tidal zone of less than I hour exposure at a depth chosen to keep the baskets submerged in water at all times. Twice a month the growth of the spats were measured along with the air and water temperature and salinity. The early summer spats, which were $17-240\%$ larger, in size, than the late summer spats at the time of cross-transplantation, grew more slowly than the late summer spats when exposed to identical environmental conditions, shortening the initial gap to a $5-20\%$ level as the first year of the growth phase came to an end in December. The growth of the Kan-Wol-Do spats lagged considerably behind the southern spats at all localities tested, whereas there were no significant differences among the latter groups. This suggests that the morphological differences between southern and western Pacific oysters in Korea are a manifestation of genetic variety and that Pacific oysters cultured along the south coast are of an identical variety as they are commonly believed to be. The seasonal changes in temperature and salinity even during rainy season in both the southern and western coastal areas are well within the range suitable for successful spawning, and spat fall. However, since the results were based on twice-a-month measurements with no data covering the critical period before and after spawning, they can only serve to indicate at best the general pattern of changes in the environmental conditions of each growing area.
We investigated space-time patterns of Quaternary fault activity of the Yangsan fault zone using ESR ages in the Samnam-myeon region, Ulsan, Korea. Some of fault gouge zones consist of well-defined bands which added to the older gouge band, indicative of reactivation. During addition of new bands, the older gouge band was inactive, which represents the type I faulting mode. ESR analyses of each band of the gouge zone allow us to construct history of fault movement. The entire fault gouge zones were reactivated by type III faulting mode giving us ESR ages of the lastest reactivation. ESR dates show temporal clustering into active and inactive periods analogous to historic and paleoseismic fault activities. ESR ages and dates of fault movements indicate migration of fault activities along the Yangsan Fault Zone. Segments of the Quaternary faults in the study area are branched in the south of Sangcheon site. The earliest record of activity in segmented faults is recorded from the western segment to the northern segment. Before 750~850 ka ago, the fault gouge zone from the western segment to the northern segment were active. At 750~850 ka ago, the fault gouge zone from the eastern segment to the northern segment were active. During 630~660 ka and 480~540 ka only the northern segment was active. After 340 ka ago, the fault gouge zone from the western segment to the northern segment were active again.

Shortnecked clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, is one of the very important shellfish produced in south-western coast of Korea. But it's ready to be polluted and have sand in flesh because it mainly inhabit in silt at the inside of coastal area. This study was carried out to obtain informations about the elimination of sand in shortnecked clam harvested from western coast of Korea. During rearing shortnecked clams in water tank, the elimination rates of sand from them at 6, 13, 23, $28^{\circ}C$ were 59.0, 88.2, 97.9, $96.1^{\circ}C$ after 48 hours, respectively. The sand was eliminated above $95^{\circ}C$ from the shellfish at 32,9 to $40\%_{\circ}$ of salinity after 48 hours. But the sand elimination from them was incomplete and inconsistent at 10 to 20 of salinity. The sand was eliminated rapidly at pH 1.9 to 9.0 however, its elimination was not effective at neutral or acidity range, It was found that the sand elimination was most effective at $23^{\circ}C, 35\%_{\circ}$ salinty and pH 9.0. Reasonable flow rate for sand eliminate in shortnecked clam was above 150 L/min./shellfish $m^3$ under both 3,000 and 4,000 L/shellfish $m^3$, and above 100 L/min,/shellfish $m^3$ under both 6,000 and 8,000 L/shellfish $m^3$ in water tank.
